Hi Friedemann,

First 4 days:

When I got out of the plane, I was glad to meet my fellow travellers, who could help me crawl to a sleeping place on the beach. Not sleeping for a night and after that not having the opportunity to stretch myself, had done his ugly work. Not even the amazing temperature of the water could prevent me from searching the nearest real bed, which was luckily already arranged by my friends. After a beauty-sleep I found myself to my surprise able to go on a hunt for pizza. Pity that it was already that late, that the nicest places were already closing when we appeared. Anyway, we found something to survive on.

Next day we decided to leave to Havanna. Varadero was not our dream place anyway, too touristic and un-cuban. And also we had some serious travelling-plans so a bit of hurry for that was involved. Luckily we could easily find a bus to Matanzas, where we walked to a station for the Herseyrailroad. Thanx to a lack of Cuban pesos, we could not buy any drink or food, but despite this we could enjoy our trip through one of the beautiest parts of Cuba, an amazing variation of landscapes with a lot of scenery, a lot. Also the scenes in the train itself were fascinating, for example with all the people transporting animals. We arrived in the end of the afternoon in Havanna, and after a short boat trip to reach the city centre and relieving our hunger and thirst, we decided to walk to our aimed destination across the Malecon, which turned out to be a one-and-a-half our walk, twice as much as the direct way, but anyway, it was a beautiful walk. For me this was anyway an occasion to find out that I wanted to prevent long walks with all the luggage. Luckily our former landlord from the last trip, Jose, was still able to house us, so that was all arranged. After a short rest we went, again by foot, to Angela, a friend who I had met before in Havanna. She was happily surprised to see me again and liked the presents for her und for Kevin, her sun. His present was a toy-guitar and luckily Friedemann could help him a bit on the way. Angela and her mother, who was by chance also present, were a bit angry that I had written Angela not so often, but anyway it was nice to meet each other again. It was just two years again that her brother had died, so there were a lot of pictures of him and some stories. Because we were very tired from the trip, Kevin and Angela’s mother brought us to the bus stop. On the way back we discovered the problematic aspect of still not having any Cuban pesos.

After a long sleep time for some good breakfast. With some hassle changing a few pesos and then to the market. In the late afternoon strolling together with Angela in totally white Santeria-clothes over a sunny Malecon, where Friedemann decides to swim between the rocks. We find out that we’re desperate for some healthy food and Angela brings us to one of the nicest paladars. Because we eat only vegetarian we order all the side-dishes, which appears to be a very good idea. We get a table full of the most delicious vegetable and fruit dishes, from which we can even enjoy the other day. We leave from Angela, promising her to drop by on our way back. We still need some time to quarrel about our travelling plans, because Friedemann has to many plans for just two weeks of holiday.

Next day, after solving out that it’s almost impossible to fulfil all Friedemanns travel plans, we try to catch train tickets to Guantanamo. Apparently this journey is only available for the other day, so we prolong our stay in Havanna for another day. The need to find a bank leads us also to a nice trip through the city centre. The day ends with a dive in the ocean from the Malecon.

The rest will follow soon. Probably i’ll make a Spanish translation.

Greetings, Marcel
