Hello everyone, hope you are all doing well. I hope the reunion will still be able to happen and that Ike doesn't ruin everyone's plans. It is raining here. As usual. Today one of the teachers, Alina, invited Emnet and I up to her house outside of the city for a typical Costa Rican meal. She had a really nice house, big and open, as seems to be the norm here. We had guacamole, smashed black beans and tortillas, a dish that was a mix of corn and hearts of palm. And also a green salad with some tuna. It was all really good, I especially like the tortillas, they were store bought, but they taste homemade compared to what we get in the stores at home. I am going to the beach this weekend with ... read more

Day 7 I went downtown again today with the same crowd relatively. Explored. Today, random thoughts and commentary: The weather here is crazy awesome. It is extremely predictable and goes a little something like this. Warm and sunny (70s-80s) through the morning until around 3ish. Then it gets cloudy - really dark clouds - and you know what’s coming. It starts to POUR for an hour or two or three, complete with huge rumbling thunder and elegant displays of violent lightning. That’s how it goes almost every day. The storms here are amazing to behold; the rain just dumps and doesn’t stop. It really put Seattle to shame. Plus, the lightning makes you fear for your life whenever you go out. I put up a video of the rain one night. Check it. The food is ... read more

Day 6 Today I felt more out of place that I ever had before. I had my first class with Ticos from 6-8pm. The class is called “Organizational Behavior” and it’s a business class taught only in Spanish and I am the only non-Tico (or only white, non-fluent Spanish speaker from Costa Rica). It was definitely an awakening. It wasn’t TOO hard to understand the teacher, but I couldn’t understand the students worth a crap. Of course the first thing we had to do was form groups for a semester long project worth half our grade (I love business classes… ugh…). Almost everyone knew each other already… except for 3 guys. And God bless those 3 guys, because it allowed me to have a group. It really made me understand what it’s like to be an ... read more

Good morning everyone, hope you all had a good weekend. Mine was fine. I went out to a club on Saturday night with some friends, it was really fun. The club itself was fun, it was straight out of the 1990's though. We had a lot of fun dancing. There were about 7 of us, we all had a really good time. They had a show with some of the dancers too, it was cool. The music could have been better, they played mostly techno, it would have been nice to hear some dance music. Not too much else is going on right now, just teaching. Have a good day!... read more

Hello everyone, I hope all is well with you. Yesterday I did not have class, but I came to work anyway so I could prepare for my class today and I had dinner plans with my friend. We went to a so called Mexican place, and it was really good, but not at all what I wanted. I ordered a chicken quesadilla. It was a different kind of flour tortilla, not hard, but not exactly soft, sort of the texture of a sopapilla. The chicken inside was good, it was in a cream sauce, rather than a tomato and chile sauce. And on top was pico de gailo. It was good, but it did not satisfy my craving for Tex-Mex food. After that I went out with another teacher, Emnet, she is Swedish, and I rode ... read more

Ok, so on the way to town today for more orientation stuffs, we passed a McDonalds. Here, they have a burger called the “McNifico”; in Spanish, ‘magnifico’ means magnificent. Yes. That’s the the McNificent burger for only $900 colones. Get it while it lasts. First experience of a Costa Rican storm today, but more on this later sometime. The real event of the day - the Costa Rican National Team vs Suriname. Where the hell is Surinam you ask? In South America between French Guinea and something else. Northeastern area. Yea, I didn’t know either - someone else had told me Africa. Why can't you locate Suriname? Well, because there aren’t enough maps in the world and people can’t read maps…um South Africa, Iraq, we should help them. If I lost you, you have to see ... read more

Ok, so the food here is crazy freaking good. Like, your tongue makes the rest of your body feel bad. I don't even know what I'm eating, but its always amazing. It looks like it could be mystery meat from your old grade school cafeteria lunchlady, but it tastes like it just came straight from the cow... or something like that. I had the realization riding the bus today that this place really is a 3rd world coun.... er... developing nation. The paradise part of things is really the people and the nature (that is outside of San Jose). More on this later. I had orientation with ULACIT (Latin American Institute of Science and Technology) and ISA (International Studies Abroad) and there are 21 girls and 5 guys. It was like freshman year orientation all over ... read more

Hello everyone, happy Thursday. I really don't have too much new going on right now. I woke up a little late so that was stressful this morning, but I still got here on time. I graded the test that I gave on Tuesday evening, so I will give that back to the students tonight and then I have to give an oral test, where I check their pronunciation. Well, sorry this is so short, I don't have too much new to say, but I thought I'd just check in! Hugs to everyone.... read more

Day 1 I flew into Houston around 3pm and immediately realized Houston is terrible. Seriously, the airport is absolutely atrocious. Think of the most basic airport you can think of; then imagine there was a nuclear fallout. That’s Houston. Not to mention the only thing in the Fox Sports Bar (which was the ONLY redeeming grace that kept me sane for 3+ hours) was Houston Rockets memorabilia from the early days (like the 90’s). I figured I would try the chili, I mean, I was in Texas... supposedly. It was alright. So, on my plane was this 73 year old Chinese lady who was nicer than your grandmother, but maybe that’s because she couldn’t understand a word of English or Spanish. They gave us customs and immigration papers to fill out and she asked me to ... read more
