Hola! Its raining now (rains almost every afternoon nowadays) and my pitiful little dog is hiding under the bed and shivering... so I thought I'd jot down a couple of experiences down cause lets just be honest, mostly out of guilt because I know people are just dying of withdraw by now 😊 By the way, if you have stuck with me this long 1) congrats and 2) I really do appreciate you reading, even if I don't know it! So what have I been up to the past couple of weeks? Well today marks the one month left point and maybe its the rain, but i'm feeling kinda down about it. Yes i'm super excited to see friends and family again, but I'm feelng also like its gonna be a hard adjustment coming home. What do I do on the weekends when I can't run off to the beach? I know i'm gonna forget to tip people (its not the custom here) and I'm really gonna miss spanish... Right when I start to get decent enough to be myself, I have to leave.. I'll I can say is that I'm super excited that my friends Will and Elaine (shout out)
view from Wilberth's farm
wouldn't mid working next to that every day found a house here so I can come back as soon as possible. I also love the kissing on the cheek thing when you greet people and I wish we were cool enough/didn't prize our "personal space" as much to do that. But oh well! My sister came the other week which was really awesome and fun. She was here for nine days more or less so we had two weekends to travel! Right when she got here, I stuck her on a five and more hour bus ride down to the south in the same town where we volunteered for the week of semana santa. Some friends I met there invited us to come stay and take part in all the festivities that are "La Feria de Miel" (Honey Festival!) which included a belly dancing show which was... interesting. Actually one of the dancers was no more than seven years old and all the Americans in the room (me, my sister, and Eric, the peace corp guy) were obviously uncomfortable with all the make-up, hair touching, and very much "big girl moves" that this little girl was whipping out. EEsh. But the Ticos didn't seem to mind so I
guess its just a thing in our society to be very much aware of our little girls and how they are behaving (or dancing for that matter) in front of a group of people, old men included... yuck. I ended up gettin super super sick on sat night ( bad tamales?) and we stayed an extra day and I had to miss school Monday morning.. oupps. Okay so i'm not saying that there weren't other reasons for returning but thats all i'm saying... 😉 We had some interesting occurances walking around Heredia which has never happened to me before, one women who was obviously on some kind of drugs yelled at us quite a few times the word for the male part and another man told us we were "tortillas" when we didn't want to buy his back scratchers.. Come to find out later that means lesbians.. Why the hostility people?? We left again wednesday for Montezuma which is this great, pretty small, and unpopulated at this time of year beach town. The beaches are gorgeous and we entertained ourselves with a bit of scrambling around the Montezuma waterfall. My sister was insane with the picture-taking but thanks to her
I had plenty to pick through and plenty more to delete. Oh did i say pictures? Yea my awesome dad sent with my sister a new camara for me.. I'm the happiest and most-undeserving recibient. (Did i just make a spiritual parallel?) So Friday we took a little snorkeling trip out to Isla Tortuga which was probably the best snorkeling I have done and the boat ride was so relaxing. The trip included a rico fish lunch and a couple hours on the beach, which I gladly spent napping 😊. Saturday included hanging around the hostel in the morning and taking my sister back to Alajuela where we spent the night because the airport is close. That night just also happened to be the same night as the national soccer championship and La Liga ( the team I was rooting for after my team, Heredia, lost in the semifinals) won! It was a big deal because La Liga is Alajuela's team and the game was in their stadium so the town was a ghost town until they won and then you could hear all kinds of partying and locos all night long. Lauran left sunday morning 😞 Muy triste. This
belly dancing!
don't worry this girl was at least 15 .. weekend brings new adventures though because I'm off to PLaya Flamingo, a beach in Guanacaste which is a region I haven't visted yet. ALSO Lauren, Brandon, and I are going with a bunch of Ticos which should be really fun but most importantly of course, good practice for my spanish! Well i guess that about wraps it up... ehh que mas? MMM if i think of anything i'll just write another blog! Chau mi amores!
