... read more

I'm now at Tortuguero National Park, where I'm spending two nights in a room right on the Caribbean. I have some wonderful photos, but these will have to wait since this computer is very slow and it would take hours to upload them. Yesterday, I came to the coast yesterday in a minivan which belongs to Modesto Watson, who is a Nicaraguan who's lived 30 years in Costa Rica. He and his American wife Fran have a small tour company that takes people on the waterways of the Park. We drove to Mion and then got into a boat. Modesto is a great nature guide, who's taking us on a total of three water tours. You wouldn't believe what I've already seen: from a crocodile, to Holler monkeys, iguanas, Toukans, herrons, and all sorts of other ... read more

Day 4. Singing in the rain. 6 am. I wander the grounds by myself. As I walk towards a huge tree filled with birds, a flock of parrots fly overhead. You can almost always hear the parrots before you see them. Stir up the heavens, they do. As I get closer, it becomes apparent I have wandered into some sort of a storage area. One of the workers asks if he can show me the botanical gardens he is developing. He takes me to a thickly forested area, which he is turning into a series of gardens that will each highlight different species of plants. We walk under a canopy of calling birds and clicking frogs—highlighted by the occasional butterfly fluttering past. The workers have already dug trenches, laid much of the drainage pipes, and created ... read more

Well here I am at last in Costa Rica! It's a beautiful country, very lush, green and mountainous. They are big on their conservation over here - about 30% of the place is protected, which is great. I had a couple of days in San Jose, then it was off to the sea turtle conservation project, La Tortuga Feliz (the happy turtle). Me and three other volunteers met in a one street town called Bataan, and were picked up by the project leader Paul, a tall, really chilled out Dutch guy with a languid stroll. But extremely passionate about what he is doing - quite inspirational really! It was a 20 minute boat ride through the canals of the jungle and when we arrived we were greeted by the other members of the project, all shorts, ... read more

A Quick Note Regarding Pictures (or the lack thereof) Our hostel in San Jose rocks! It it huge... it has a swimming pool... a roof top bar/restaurant... and tons of computers with FREE internet. However, the internet is a bit to slow to load pictures. So, we gave up. Sorry about that. We'll post pictures for our Puerto Viejo, Puerto Limon, and Tortuguero entries this coming Monday or Tuesday evening when we are back in the land of COX High Speed Digital Cable. Sigh. I never thought we'd actually be glad to see COX. See you all soon! Intro to Tortuguero North of Puerto Limon, on a tiny slip of land between Tortuguero Canal and the Caribbean is the little village of Tortuguero, pleasantly situated on the northern tip of Parque Nacional Tortuguero in northeastern Costa ... read more

so that whole thing of NOT GETTING HUNG UP ON LEAVING.... HA! after heather started quietly showing her emotion tonight, I couldnt help but crawl in bed with her and start to bawl. THIS is culture shock in itself. just wanted to make sure heath, my mom, my dad, nina, beth, renee, ali farlow and ange realize they all contributed to my very very splotched face right now.... its been an emotional night. thank you to everyone who has made ANY part of my year as much fun as its been, from vic to bars in banff to dundas pardo's -- ' its been the BEST year so far!' yyeeeehhaaaa! let the trip commence! although goodbyes can be hard, i know I'll be coming back to everyone here, so im not getting too hung up on it. its now just over 24 hours until I jump on the plane with 16 other YCI volunteers...and my mind is racing with things to do, say and feel before this adventure truly begins. the 4 days of training has been immensely helpful - although I have to admit, I would HATE to commute to T.O. everyday. ugh! my family just treated me to my last dinner in Dundas ... taco's! HA - that Jean really is HILARIOUS. needless to say they got a kick out of how much i hate re-fried beans already. somehow the cake's got mixed up at Weil's Bakery - and I ended up with ... read more
