View to Berlin property from the mall
This is on the main road leaving San Ramon headed to the autopista from which to can head to the beach or San Jose. Right for the beach, left for towns enroute to San Jose. (Palmares,Naranjo, Sarchi, Greacia, Atenas) Just what is a typical day?
A friend recently asked about our typical days. I had to think long and hard about this one. I talked to Bill and Callista, the consensus is we do not have typical days. We wake up when our bodies tell us to, eat a good healthy breakfast (ok, sometimes more good than healthy) and start our day. That’s where typical ends.
There are days we ‘have to’ do things. Either we have to buy groceries, have dental appointments, have meetings with attorneys, as well as days we have to get out of the house. I made a photo journal of a couple of days in our lives to help you get a better sense of our way of life.
Monday was a have to day. We had to go to Palmares to purchase a new mattress for the guest room bed. Unfortunately, they didn’t have queen mattress on hand so one was ordered and arrangements made to pick it up Thursday morning.
Bill and I were both curious about what the rains had been doing to the property. We, I mean Bill, decided to take the back road up the mountain
Mattress factory
Ordering the queen sized mattress. from Palmares. What a treat! NOT! I prayed a lot that day, very loudly!
The water trench we dug on the property seemed to work, the erosion was minimal. Our fences on the lower elevation did their job and held the dirt and boulders. Not much evidence of seepage thru to the third elevation. Yeah, we’ve done something right.
Bill decided I’d had enough excitement for the day as I was still recovering from gripe. It hangs on … settled into the chest a little now but I’ll survive.
Tuesday was dentist day with appointments at 9am and 1pm. Bear went with us as we were up and out early in the day with no other plans than to see the dentist. My appointment was the usual two hours so Bill, Callista and Bear ran errands while I got drilled. They filled the propane tank, stocked up on bagels, got the car washed, and went to the bank, stopped at a jeweler for a new watch battery and return to pick me up on time. After a brief introduction of Bear to the dentists’ dog, Phoebe we headed to a soda Bill found for lunch. Good food
and reasonable prices, plato del dio 1500 colones or about $3.00. We returned for Callista’s 1pm dental appointment but ended up taking Bear for a walk as the dentist wouldn’t be available until arount 2pm.
Callista’s appointments are always quicker than mine. We were all happy to be returning home before the rush hour traffic started. The trip home from Pavas took just over 45 minutes. We left the city at the right time and didn’t get stuck behind many semi-trucks on the hills. We generally expect an hour for the trip home, sometimes it’s a little less, sometimes a lot longer.
Wednesday I decided it would be a great day for massage. Bill thought it would be a good idea to release the toxins after being sick the previous weekend. I picked up Edgar my therapist after lunch looking forward to a relaxing afternoon. As is sometimes the case when we pick up Edgar he has us stop for errands along the way. This day we stopped to see friends at a bamboo workshop and butterfly farm. I don’t know if it always happens or not but an impromptu jam session broke out. Not a typical jam
session…one guy started playing the guitar, another a rain stick, someone else drumming on the table and yet another taping glass, coffee pots, and anything else in site along with the beat. I tried to resist, tried to consciously resist but my feet started tapping away. It was uncontrollable! I caught myself thinking of how lucky I was to be experiencing that moment in time. We invited Edgar to stay for dinner with us, Bills favorite poste de cerdo. It’s good practice for our Spanish when Edgar is around. There are only a few people Bill feels comfortable practicing with, Edgar is one of them. Callista enjoys using her Spanish with him as well.
Thursday we wanted to head into Heredia for a travel and tourism fair at a local mall. Edgar the massage man, needed to buy uniforms in San Jose so he rode in with us. For us it was a quick trip into and out of town. The travel fair at he mall turned out to be a waste but Bill enjoyed a couple of tap birras with Edgar which made his day. Watching sports in a bar with a cold one always makes Bill happy.
Callista and I wandered the mall and ran into friends, Sally, Ryan and Mo who live in Heredia. What an unexpected treat! We headed back to San Ramon around 4pm.
Some days, days like today are not all that different than weekends in the states. Bill is watching the Masters and a little soccer with Bear sleeping at his feet. Callista is learning soccer watching with him and becoming involved in the world cup mayhem. It’s a great day, no plans to go anywhere or do anything except to enjoy the day as it unfolds. Ah… the day has begun to unfold…. Bears friends, Zeus, Osky, and the renegade Black just arrived for a game of chase.
OH, I didn't forget....... HAPPY FATHER’S DAY!!!!
Pura Vida!

Keep the articles coming!
Jen, I just came across your blogs about a week ago! My husband and I are coming for about 3 weeks in Oct to look at land in San Ramon. We are staying at Angel Valley. We will be meeting with Ben and also Jose. We will be looking at Ben's Rio de Jesus property and with Jose at his Butterfly Dance. We like a little warmer weather coming from Florida! I did want to ask about the mattress factory. Would you say that they were of good quality? Box springs? Pura Vida, Debbie
