Edit Blog Post
Hi all, we know that only a few days have passed since we updated you, but we´ve had a busy time and thought we´d let you know what we´ve been up to.....
In our last blog we explained how we were due to take our first chicken bus to Ometepe Island (Nicaragua) the next day...well we survived the experience, only to be directed next to a chicken boat! Both could be best described as hot, sweaty, noisy, and slightly scary experiences - the bus went at about 100 miles an hour and the boat at about 5 miles an hour, and we seemed to be gaining water at our feet the entire time! But at least we experienced transport local-style!! Once we arrived at Ometepe we met another bus, (this time a private one for the group). I asked how long the ride would take, and the driver answered "about an hour depending on the cows..." That kind of sums up Ometepe really...very rural, quiet, beautiful landscapes and tranquil waters. We stayed in a hotel right on the black-sand beach on Lake Nicaragua, and yet again experienced an enfored curvew of 10pm and no hot water thanks to an electric storm
and no electricity on the whole island! We did go on an amazing hike to a waterfall on the island though, before leaving for Costa Rica.
We are now in Costa Rica at La Fortuna on the foot of Volcano Arenal. We arrived yesterday morning from Monteverde Cloudforest- about 4 hours away. At Monteverde (the town in the clouds) we both experienced the most amazing days of our lives. You´ve probably already clicked on the videos, but zip-lining was seriously incredible. We were harnessed onto cable and travelled through the cloudforest at speeds of 40 miles and hour. We were literally suspended in the air, travelling so high up we were in line with the clouds... By the last few zip-lines, Albert had the ingenious idea of strapping our small digital camera to his helmet, and we were hoping to add the video for your enjoyment, but we cant seem to get it to load. Fingers crossed we'll bring it to you next time! We thought zip-lining would be fun, but did not realise the speed and height and length of these lines of cables. We felt like monkeys jumping through the trees... The longest zip-line was the length of
a football field...insane...Also, the tarzan swing was a bit like a mini bungee jump, (excuse the screams!)(dont worry mums, we wont do a real one!!) Unfortunately, we could not include the video of Albert jumping as there were too many swear words to be heard, and the video was not suitable for family viewing 😊
After the thrills of zip-lining, we then moved on to experience walking through the cloudforest reserve on suspension bridges. This was also an awesome experience until the heavens opened and the torrential rains, thunder and lightning seriously impeded our hike! Still, an incredible day followed by warming up with a coffee Costa Rican-style, and a chocolate fondue!
Now in La Fortuna, we went on another volcano trip last night, but this time we headed straight to the foot of the Arenal volcano to a view point. We got out of the van and stood watching the volcano in the distance as it started spewing out lava from the top and the sides. It was an incredible sight but unfortunately it was too dark for any pictures to come out, so you are just going to have to believe us! We then got back into the
van and headed for the Baldi hot springs. We thought we were really just going to a glorified swimming pool at the bottom of the volcano, but were seriously mistaken as we pulled up at a resort containing 12 different pools, slides and jacuzzi´s - all filled with natural spring water from the volcano, all at differing temperatures. It perfect timing for us, as we were starting to wonder when we would next experience the feeling of relaxing in hot water! We finished off the night with a trip to the local disco!
We are having an adventure-less day today, and are relaxing whilst our hangovers subside... We are off white water rafting on Friday so will send you a full update as soon as we can.
Big love from us in our last Central American country! We cannot believe we are already a quarter of the way through our trip...
Pura vida!
Hasta Luego!!
A and A xxx
