Volcan Arenal

On Saturday we had breakfast at a little restaurant in Monteverde and then headed to La Fortuna, another pueblo about 25 miles away where there is an active volcano called Volcan Arenal. Transportation is pretty interesting here as we are learning! In order to get to La Fortuna, we took a 'jeep-boat-jeep' taxi. Basically, since the roads between the 2 cities are pretty much piles of rocks and potholes, we road in this 'jeep' to get to a lake. There we hopped on a boat which took us across the lake. Then we got into another 'jeep' which brought us into La Fortuna. It took about 3 hours to do all this, even though it wasn't that far. The trip was so fun though. We were with a couple from California and another from Spain and then of course us 4 (Val, Eric, and us). We had so much fun and our chofer was really nice and stopped along the way to let us enjoy the views. At one point some cows ran out in front us, however we didn't hit them which was a good thing.

When we got to La Fortuna we checked into our hotel and then walked around and found a place to eat lunch. We lucked out because it was really hot, sunny, clear and all day we had a clear view of the volcano. This made up for our other trip when it was too cloudy to see Volcan Poas! At 3pm our chofer and tour guide picked us up to take us to the rainforest around the volcano for a hike. It was different from the other rainforests - this one was a secondary rainforest because it was all destroyed from the volcano when it had a huge erruption 40 years ago, but now has completely regrown. At 6pm when it was dark we went to this lookout point and waited to see if we could see lava coming from the volcano. It was like watching for shooting stars. We just stared at this volcano and waited and when it was dark enough we could see lava coming out of the volcano and flowing down the sides! At points it was a lot and quite amazing to see. After awhile of watching the lava we went to the hot springs. This was like a huge hot tub party. The resort where we

went after watching the lava had about 18 hot tubs ranging in degrees from 96 over 160 degrees. The water comes from a hot spring which is heated naturally from the volcano. Obviously the really hot ones we couldn't go in, although we attempted! It was fun to relax in the ultimate hot tubs after a busy day. We got back to our hotel around 10, went and ate at a restaurant and then hit the hay!

Sunday we headed back to San Jose. This bus ride took 5 hours again, due to the over 30 stops we made along the way. You gotta love public transportation! But it was cheap so that's what we had to keep reminding ourselves!!! Otro viaje increible para nosotros!

Can´t really tell it, but trust us, there is lava in this picture... if you look real close, squint one eye and shut the other and back up a few feet. See it?
