Heading west from Leesburg, we spent some time in Crystal River, where it was warm and muggy during our entire stay. We visited Homasassa Springs Wildlife Park and saw our first manatees. We then parked the bus at Marathon’s facility near Tampa and flew to Aruba on a timeshare exchange. Arrival was on a bright sunny day with temperatures in the mid 80’s. The weather was the same through the week with only an occasional passing shower. Our resort was on Eagle Beach, a pristine white beach with no seaweed or jellyfish and crystal clear, beautiful turquoise water. We went in the water almost every day. Aruba is a small, arid island about 6 miles wide by 26 miles long, and mostly flat. A great deal of the island is set aside as a National Park. ... read more

After spending 3 days in intense conference activities (and one fun night at the conference dinner where 50 year old academics started doing playing limbo), it was time to hit the tourist trail again. Till now, those conference days had been essentially work punctuated with good eating and the occasional lazing on the resort beach. As far as resorts go, I have to say the Marriot resort was rather disappointing - nicely decorated, but not much to do. I guess its geared more at the 'laze about and do nothing all day', rather than the more active, 'let’s see some fun' tourist. The breakfast buffet though is great! The night before, we checked out a local festival. Now given that we're in the Caribbean, you'd expect festivals to be fairly excitable events - lots of dancing, ... read more

Aruba - been here one day already and all I've seen is flab, flubber and overhang. Goodness, these American tourists need to diet. Today, a friend and I decided to venture out of the comfort of the resort to experience the offroad Aruba. Our plan was to drive alone the rugged north and east coasts of Aruba - sparsely populated and often compared to the moon landscape. The island is infact akin to a parched desert - dry sandy expanses where cactii and tumbleweed abound. Admidst this all, you often catch a glimpse of an isolated colorfully decorated dwelling - yellows and pale blues being the dominant colours. Yet on the edges, you are greeted by deep blue waters with reasonably white sandy beaches - in stark contrast to the arid interior. First up was the ... read more

Aruba - known to me solely from its brief mention in the Beach Boys song, Kokomo. Its one of the many gorgeous islands in the carribean thats been converted into a tourist haven, and thus is the constant abode of overweight americans with oversized wallets looking to further increase their girth by lazing about and eating all day. I was in Aruba for a conference - funny how serious conferences are held in holiday destinations all too often! The conference was in the swanky Marriot resort, isolated towards the nothern tip of the small island. There isn't much to do in Aruba, apart from soaking up some rays, maxxing out the credit card, and packing on the hip fat. Thankfully, I had a rental car, so I had a bit more freedom than some of the ... read more

Aruba - Hudishibana - California Lighthouse  Central America Caribbean » Aruba By roseycheeksAugust 24th 2006Yvonne Choi This Hudishibana - California Lighthouse is isolated at the northwest tip of the Aruba Island. This lighthouse has become one of the Aruba’s most scenic trademarks. It offers the perfect view of the western coastline if sandy beaches. There are rocky coral shorelines and sand dunes near-by, so please be careful if you are driving! Because we saw a jeep drove through the sand dunes and got stuck in the sand! There is a restaurant just right next to the lighthouse, they offer refreshments during the days and they do fine dining during the nights. There were... read more

Aruba - Eagle Beach Central America Caribbean » Aruba By roseycheeksAugust 24th 2006Yvonne ChoiDuring Aug06, we stayed at the MVC Eagle Beach hotel which is directly opposite the beautiful Eagle Beach. It’s got long white sand stretches along the west-side of the island! It is very quiet; it really feels like a private beach. The Eagle Beach is just across the road from where we stayed. There are some parking spaces for you to park your car if you drove from another part of the island! There are some special looking trees called the Divi Divi Tree. There are also a lot of different sizes of iguanas around as well!! ... read more

Aruba Baby! February 18, 2006 - February 25, 2006 What can I say about Aruba? You really can't beat the weather consistency you get in Aruba. If a beach vacation with great weather, friendly locals, affordable dining, and complete relaxation is in your future plans, you have to at least consider Aruba. I will admit that as a whole, Aruba seemed better suited for families and couples. I never really got the impression that there was a late night scene that really catered to the younger, single traveler. If late night partying is your thing, there are definitely better options in the Caribbean. We stayed at the Renaissance Aruba Resort & Casino. The location for my interests was top notch, as it was right in the center of the capital. Several attractions were in walking distance, ... read more

9 nights, 10 days in Aruba. 1 olympic sized pool. Close to 30 hours of training. 2 ocean swims. 2 swimming related injuries. 1 boat ride. Countless flipturns. 3 people to a bed. 0 clothes. WAY too much money spent. Beastly muscles. thank you college swimming training trip. The swimming was done at the only competition pool on the island, the Piscina Olympico which is on the southeast side of the island, about thirty minutes from the high-rise hotel strip. We did not stay in a high-rise hotel of course, just near them. The pool was great.. finally a place large enough to accomodate the girls and boys teams at the same time. Some days we even shared the pool with a young team of Aruban syncronized swimmers, which was heavenly as you might have guessed. ... read more
