"The first condition of understanding a foreign country is to smell it." - Rudyard Kipling 1st of Elul arrived (September 1st in the Turkish calendar ) and with it also the 1st of Ramadan and the Moslem world entered a different phase, the holy month of Ramazan (Ramadan in Turkish ) The Muslims are expected to follow the 5 ‘pillars’ of Islam, one of them is keeping the fast of Ramazan , if capable of doing so. When preparing for the trip, we saw that the ramazan will begin at the middle of the trip, but we did not know what to expect from the people and would it be difficult to get food Ramazan month has its own temperament than the rest of the year. We eat breakfasts at the hotels we stay in ... read more

“I want to see mountains again, Gandalf, mountains , and then find somewhere where I can rest in peace and quiet… somewhere where I can finish my book” - Bilbo - The Fellowship of the Ring We spent the last 10 days in the Kachkar Mountains and Eastern Turkey. We will let the photos tell the travel story and Hagit will describe how it is to travel with a toddler Traveling with Liya A year ago, I talked to a friend who traveled with their 7 month old to London. She explained the difference between traveling as a couple to traveling as a threesome. She said it is a different trip. The baby needs to crawl just when you want to visit a museum, he wants to go to the park but you want to ... read more

"Dont it always seem to go That you dont know what you've got Till its gone' - Joni Mitchell We spent the last 72 hours in Europe. When we landed after a comfortable flight, in which we had 4 seats to ourselves, we reached the luggage claim to find that ONE OF OUR BAGS IS LOST!!! Since it is not the first time we have missing luggage we quickly reported it in the ‘lost and found’ and went on our way feeling sure it will arrive on the next day’s flight. After 3 days of waiting we understood we will never see our bag again! So we made an ordered list of what we need to replace from the least important to the absolutely essential. And spent 3 hrs on Sunday exercising our credit card ... read more

"Life is what happens while you are busy making other plans." - John Lennon We are at the airport ready to begin our long awaited "vacances". We have been busy since returning from the far-east almost 2 years ago. Most of our energy was spent on "life" - Yaron started a new job, Hagit finished yet another university degree ( 3rd one - apparently she is as smart as she is beautiful y.b. ), we bought a new car. The uninspiring day to day we all share until we open the door (and pocketbooks) to temporarily leave it all behind. We get off the bandwagon, look how the rest of the world lives, ponder the meaning of life, only to conclude that the bandwagon isn’t that bad and we would like back on. As the ... read more

Hagit: Deciding to go on a long trip was difficult for me since I didn't know what I am going to go through and if I am going to like it. All I knew was that I want to do it and that it is better be good because I postpone a school year for that. When we started the trip, 5 months seemed like a very long time for me. I drew a time table on a little notebook and draw "X" after every day. Suddenly I found that the trip is almost over and that 5 charts are almost full with "X". I also found that I don't want to go back home. I was especially surprised by the feeling that we can continue traveling for 5 more months. Traveling was an eye ... read more

After 4.5 of hard travels as backpackers. sleeping in Tajik tents, crashing into Tibetan restaurants, arriving into random places in Laos or just staying in $2 dumps in diffrent places, we had a completely different 2 weeks to finish our trip We stoped being backpackers and became honeymooners To start the metamorphosis we got hair cuts (actually only Hagit got one - Yaron likes his hair long as it is), bought new swimming suits and beachwear. then we made flight reservations to take us between all the islands - no more long buses for us! Finlay, we made reservations to good hotels. only once in the past 2 weeks we slept in a place that had "guest-house" in it's name. the rest were all "resorts". the most expensive place we stayed with backpacking cost $15 (in ... read more

--- See our Shana Tova Video Thailand We never intended to visit Thailand on this trip apart from relaxing in it's Islands. but "from here to there" we passed through Bangkok and Chiang-Mai 3 times. we mainly used these visits for "organizations" - getting visas and flights to neighboring countries but we did manage to a few sites on the way. Thailand is a modern country - a strong contrast to it's neighbors. the bus ride from Bangkok to the Cambodian boarder was in an air-con bus traveling 100kph. the 150km on the Cambodian side took 6hr! sleeping on the Laos side of the Mekong river in a city with only local basic food. then crossing to Thailand for a breakfast with home-made grain bread and real cappochino. and the 1hr flight between Myanmar and ... read more

special long 2 week edition Before going to Burma all Yaron knew about it is that the road built between it and Thailand - called the Burmese Road - reminded ex-WWII solders in Israel's War of Independence of the road to sieged Jerusalem Before going to Burma all Hagit knew about it is from a game she played with her mother when she was a little girl. She would squat her eyes very thin and then all the people looked thin and dark - just like Burmese. 12 things we learned about Burma in 10 days there 1. For the past 10 years Burma is called Myanmar. 2. It is HOT in Myanmar. we could not be on the street between 10:00 and 16:00 in Yangon. so we saw DVDs in the hotel. the locals ... read more

in search of elephants As we treat the lonely planet guide books as our travelling bible, we followed its advice to a place that was highlighted on the Laos guide as a bullet on the map in north Laos. it is a good place to see some elephants working in a place called Hongsa. we didn't at all suspect anything bad although it was not mentioned in our South-Asia Lonely-Planet or in the Laos guides from "rough-guide" and "footprint". at the end going to Hongsa was like choosing randomly a point on the map and going there... it took us 10 hr of painful slow boat riding just to get to nowhere - a place we were told we can find a ride to Hongsa. a little hungry but very optimistic about the elephants we ... read more

TIME = DISTANCE devided by ??? you look at the map. 250 km. good. how long will it take to get there by bus? you could ask someone but that will not work (read the "lying" part in the previous blog) you could guess. but you have to take into account so many variables. The road condition. the number of pigs that will be loaded to the bus. the number of times the bus will break. does the driver get paid by the hour? does he want to arrive late? does he get free food somewhere? (surly he will stop of an hour). is the road flat or hilly? will we need to push the bus out of the mud? can it climb the mountains fast then 5 kph? how many cows will pass the ... read more
