Getting around KL has a hi-tech train system and a monorail. We had a short ride on the monorail. That was fun! But there was an even easier way to get to several places in one day. It's called the "Hop-on, Hop-off Bus". We sat up on the top deck and had a good look around between stops. It even had headphones describing landmarks in several languages. The main downside was the traffic - busy at all times of the day. KL Bird Park So many colourful birds. Lots just wandering around. Some in huge aviaries. The whole bird park is shady and peaceful. We particularly like a "cave" behind a waterfall. It feels unusual to look out through falling water. The keepers put on a show around lunchtime. It opens with a cockatoo spelling "welcome" ... read more

Leaving home Taxi? Where? Of course, it's coming... Any minute now... Must be around the corner. That's what the taxi operator told us when we finally got through on the phone. But the next car coming is definitely NOT a taxi. Nor the next one. Nor any others. We are still waiting on the footpath at home. Going nowhere. Could this adventure end before it even begins? Mum was worried because the taxi we had booked was really late to take us to the airport. The taxi turned up eventually. The driver had been busy talking to a policeman about a speeding ticket. Not a happy cabbie! He drove us in a Maxi taxi van. They are bigger than normal taxis because we are a bigger than normal family with plenty of luggage. And we still ... read more

Eat or starve? Malaysia is the home of laksa, curries and hot sauces. Even noodle and rice dishes are spicy. Dad says I will need to get to like spicy food - or starve! So we have been visiting Malaysian restaurants before we go. Just trying some new foods. Training the tastebuds. One of our favourite eating places has a collection of hawkers stalls inside a food court. A big range of styles to choose from. But dad says the food is still mild compared to the real thing. Hmm.. Maybe I will pack a few muesli bars - just in case! We tried a Malay dessert this week called "Ice kachang" (aka "Ais kacang" or "Air Batur Campur" or "ABC"). It is a mountain of brightly-coloured shaved ice drizzled with evaporated milk. Inside, there are ... read more

Life is either a daring adventure or it is nothing at all. Name your mission Malaysia sure is different from where my family live in Australia. And those differences must be worth a closer look. It has been calling us for a long time. One whole year ago, we finally decided to have an adventure. Airfares were being offered dirt cheap. So, we booked flights for the whole family. Dad was up late that night figuring out all the connections. It all worked out... Yippee! I won't miss freezing through winter in July at home. It's a great time to escape to a tropical climate. Have passport; will travel At last, my passport is here. Nothing will stop us now! You can't leave home without a current passport. And my latest photo sure looks different than ... read more
