To dispel with all the suspense out there for my blogs and pictures I’m going to start releasing blog post with just pictures for the days in a suitably timely manner and fill them in later. So enjoy the beauty of China I offer before I bring in my often meaningless and sarcastic insight and storytelling for accompaniment.... read more

My right hand skills are just too good, its time I move on to find new adventures and challenges. And what better pursuit than one getting me closer to my life time goal to become fully ambixaterous. So I’m going to try working these pinching sets of sticks with my left hand to move a little closer to that goal. My suspicion is I will in most cases subconsciously default to using my right hand whenever I sit down for any meal and in general do a poor job of pursuing this self-imposed challenge. For the group dinners it’s not an option as if you aren’t quick with the chopsticking you’re out of luck and just have the scraps to pick through. As it’s been going now as soon as a dish is set down at ... read more

It continues to remain an adventure. Anyway, we had a little switch around in our schedule today. Instead of the Chinese painting class we practices some calligraphy. I think it worked out for the best as we learned more about the brush strokes with the calligraphy lesson which we also used in the painting class. Our practice was just some “simple” strokes horizontal, vertical, diagonal curving, and hooking. Creating the general stroke shapes is easy. Anyone can make move the brush across the parchment in a straight or curved line, but getting the shape correct is where the art of it comes in. That includes the getting the varying thickness along the stroke length, getting rounded ends to the strokes, and making sure to get all the accents of a single stroke. Like for the straight ... read more

Dinner at McDonalds while I’m in China!? Why yes you have lost my interest in continuing the night with your dinner party. I think I’d sooner eat at a Chili’s in Mexico, oh wait that scandal of a memory actually happened. Fortunately for me this time around no such indignity would be repeated as I follow directions and signed up for the optional evening trip to visit the Red Tent Night Market in Guilin. With those who went we graded some dinner along delicious street (not sure it this is the true translation or a tourist defined name) downtown beforehand. We were also fortunate enough to catch the hotel waterfall in operation, it only runs at night for a relatively short duration. What happens is the hotel, which has an all glass slanted front side, just ... read more

It’s inescapable! I only had one day in between and again I’m served beer fish. I know I have no right to complain given that my visit has been sponsored, plus it still is a delicious dish. However it’s always the whole fish in there so you got to watch out for all the bones. Makes it hard to not be just a little annoyed, coming from cleanly prepared fish filet dishes in America. And given that the meal was never the same when including all the other dishes I could have easily avoided the beer fish if I truly felt its continued consumption overwhelming. Anyway my morning class was spent on the roof of the CLI building at the suggestion of my teacher. Which was great fun given the Guilin Glisten phenomena and the brightest ... read more

So during the trip in Yangshuo I made a passing comment to my roommate about needing to get a haircut if I’m to survive the rest of the stay in China. So now he keeps asking what hairstyle I’m going to get and telling me about the whereabouts of the closest salon to CLI. I was almost ready to do it. Plan would have been either getting it cut roughly by half so it’s back to just shoulder length or going all the way and cutting it all. But after a few days I still have my full length and don’t think I’ll be going through with anything here. For some time now I’ve been setting graduate school graduation as the preliminary event to any haircuts, and it there are to be any goals on that ... read more
