The west coast of Vancouver Island is one of the wetter places in Canada. During any visit, one should expect rain. I was prepared to have rain during my time there, but the rain had cleared up just after I arrived. The forecast had actually called for some form of rain. But it never materialized. The night passed with no rain and in the morning, I awoke to a beautiful day. I got up at the ridiculously early time of around 6. I'm not much of a morning person, but camping has seen me tending to go to bed earlier and thus getting up earlier. Not fighting it, I got up, packed and headed out to see more of the park. I first went to one of the beaches, Combers Beach. It was quiet, except for ... read more

From the campground in Nanaimo, I headed out to the highway. I had had a restless night in my tent, but I wasn't overly tired, so that was nice. I decided that if I passed a Walmart I would stop and get a bit bigger tent, and one that didn't have a hole in it, should I ever encounter rain (wishful thinking, I'm sure, given my attempt to tent my way around the country in the summertime). Then I passed a Walmart. Providence? I stopped and got the new tent. Hopefully it will fit the bill in the dry department. Then I headed down the highway until I reached the turnoff for the west side of the island and Pacific Rim National Park. This is one of Canada's west-most national parks. I have always heard of ... read more

In the morning, I got up and headed off to get some breakfast before checking in on my grandmother. I did decide I wanted something of a substantial breakfast, so I went to McDonald's. (Gasp!!! Yeah, I'm kind of disappointed in myself, too.) I ordered and then stood to the side, as I had been instructed. After a moment, this guy behind me asked if I was going to order. I said I was already done and he asked me, in a really annoyed voice, what I was doing there then. I should be standing off to the side. Then he walked up to the till to order and called me an idiot. I confronted him and he kind of looked as though he wanted to shrivel up a bit and disappear. That is one thing ... read more

After being very well treated at the Moon Shadows Campground in Merritt, I headed got up and began the last leg to Vancouver. I intended to get back on the Coquihalla highway. The Coquihalla is a highway that was built to make a faster and more direct route from Kamloops down to Vancouver. The Trans-Canada Highway threaded a route down the Fraser River, but it was winding and somewhat dangerous and not very direct. The Coquihalla was supposed to alleviate that. When it first opened, it was a toll highway. And all the truckers hated it. “It's to steep,” they complained. It was going to be very hard on their rigs. They still used it though. It just shaved too much off the travel distance and time taken. The toll booths have been taken down now, ... read more

The night passed uneventfully even though there was the threat of rain in an increasingly ominous sky. But there was no rain and I woke up to reasonably clear conditions and a nice enough seeming day. I headed out to the highway and it was still closed. It was supposed to be closed until around 1 in the afternoon, with a moderate degree of confidence. Wanting to know exactly what moderate might mean (if moderate meant it would likely open at the appointed time or shortly thereafter, I would wait it out; if not I would think about heading on the much longer detour to the south), I headed back to the visitor information offices. After discussing it with them, I learned that the road south had winter driving conditions and high water that was threatening ... read more

Finally, I received my batteries in the mail and I was free to leave on my grand adventure with North America. So I packed up out of my brother's place and headed off towards Vancouver. From Calgary to Vancouver is about a thousand kilometers and would normally take about 10 hours. I expected to drive for about 5 or 6 hours. Instead, I only drove to Golden, about three hours away. As I arrived in Golden, the highway information sign announced that Highway 1 was closed. A quick stop at the BC visitor information station let me know that a mud slide had closed the highway between Golden and Revelstoke. That meant that I either had to take a long detour south that would add roughly 6 hours to the trip, or I could hang out ... read more
