Although I’ve asked around over the last couple of months, I’ve failed to find the reliable, adventurous license-holding friend I hoped to take on the trip. I turned down offers from a couple of people who responded to my post on the Internet: the first from a 63 year old with experience of driving ‘in a provincial town’ and the second from Moscow student (no driving license) who responded to my question about the cost of the trip with an intriguing ‘I hadn’t thought about that’. So, in my single-mindedness, I’m going to do most of the driving myself. I’ve got company, Anya, until Moscow, then friends to visit in Cheboksary, Kazan, Bashkiria, Perm, Yekaterinburg and Novosibirsk.
