Instead of heading off to Kampala as expected, we decided to hang out for a while, mostly because on the day we chose to travel to Uganda they held their first "free" elections in 25 years. Most elections in africa end in some sort of blood bath, so we went on safari instead. The safari, it self ,was magnificent. Ngorongor crater is the worlds largest collapsed vocanoe dome. It has a unqiue ecosystem, where many of the animals on the bottom of the crater (more than 12 kms in diameter) never leave. We saw hippos, black rhino, elephants, jackel, hyena, lions on the prowl, cheetah, cranes, wildebeast, buffalo, and more. It was the first time we'd seen a cheetah and the first time for a live lion. I have pictures, and I'll post them eventually. I've ... read more

The spice tour was great. We visited plantations and local villages that had spices growing in the backyard. We saw how curry was grown, cinnimon, cardamom, vanilla, ginger, coffee, and more. After the tour and march throught the fields we were taken to a village for lunch. we were seated on the floor in groups of five and fed delicous coconut curry fish, jasmine rice, chapati and local spinach peanut combo. When I saw food is delicious I mean better than normal. Most of Africa is not known for its delicacies. In fact most of the time its down right grim. Rice and beans or ugali and beans. For my faithful readers, ugali is the same as Malawi's 'nsima', or Zimbabwe's 'sadza' mazie gground up to make some sort of paste. its not delicious. But I'm ... read more

what an adventure the last few days have been. The train ride from Mbeya to dar es salaam was spectacular. First class was most excellent. We actually hadto book the entire train compartment for us to share it, which meant that we actually bought 4 tickets insead of two,but boy was it worth it. The compartment itself was plush (for african standards) it had 4padded benches, upon which we were suposed to sleep and sit. a table for eating, lights and a fan. it also included bedding, wonders of all wonders. The fan didn't work and the lights wouldn't turn off, but other than that. it was fabuous.I don't even really need to talk about the toilet. just assume the worst. The fun part of catching the train was that we had no real idea of ... read more

For the record dar es salam is I think the largest city in Tanzania. Not a disease. I am in Mzuzu right now, we came here again yesterday to catch the bus to Mbeya (another town in Tanzania) however that all went terribly wrong. First I'll comment on other things The intruder into our tent was in Cape Maclear. We had bad vibes about that place to begin with, and it didn't help when the fellow came into the tent. WE were sleeping. I head the zipper open. I thought oh, pauls got the shits again (NOT) but as I opened one I to make sure he wasn't letting any mozzies in, I noticed paul had become black, and about 15 years old. I looked at this fellow, he looked at me. I screamed GET OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ... read more

I hate to admit it, but why bother lying.... yes, we are still in blantyre. WHy? Because we were sick, and the doctor finally told us that we are free to leave and gave us a second run of antibiotics for just in case. I hope this is the end of the ear infections, sinus infections, flu's and anything else that can hamper with our adventure. We have basically laid about for the past week and a bit, not doing much. Each morning we are woken by some half crazed bird that sounds like a cross between a deranged turkey and a sick cat. My birthday was relativly uneventful, except I had a fever all the night before, and was too sick to go out. Except to the doctor. Paul was incredibly sweet though, he went ... read more

the reason we are still here is that pauls ear is not better yet. We were all packed up ready to go this morning when he informs me that his ear hurts and is leaking. so off to the doctor we go. Doctor prescribs paul some ear drops and penicillin. we get back to the hotel (about 3 blocks) and we read the ingredients in the meds and first and foremost they say don#t mix with penicillin and the other says if your allergic to penicillin don#t take this. So, I sent paul back to the doc for a new script, and i made breakfast. One huge mango with one huge avocado, bread and boiled egg. alas, another day in the life of paul and lucienne. so we decided to stay put at least for one ... read more

Where do I begin? We left the beautiful isle of Ilha on monday morning despite what our house mom told us todo, which was to leave the next day.... to hopefully arriv ein Nampula by mid after noon. Well, the first mode of transport was an open back truck... yes mom I was riding in the back of a pick up on the freeway...it wasn't at all comfertable until someone decided to load a matteress on board as well as the 17 people. WE had the good seat, on the matteress. That truck dropped at the half way point where we jumped off had a fanta or two and hopped on to another truck, please note that the temps were prob about 35 at least and in the late morning sun it was bloody hot!. Africa » Mozambique January 20th 2006

we made it to Ilha de Mozambique with very few scratches, my ear is fine and so is pauls. All we have t show for the 3 day bus journey are bruises on our knees. and bums, and mozzie bites. However, alll this will heal and now we are in the most beautiful place I´ve seen in a long time. We are surrounded in a mixture of cultures....african and muslim. There are more mosques than churches, the island is 2.5 kms long and 600 meters wide, the portugese used this island as a fort in the 1500´s so many of the buildings are very very old. I´m more than suprised that there is an internet cafe here. I´ll attempt to add some pictures tomorrow when I post my prewritten blog entry about the last few weeks. ... read more

How time flies when your on a chicken bus. for 2 days for 500 kms on the worst road I've ever seen. ANyway, we are showered and ready for some food before hitting the overpriced bed we've rented for the night before boarding our express bus to nampula tomorrow at 5 am. hopefully this bus doest breakdown, set on fire, have chickens and goats in it and if both my ass cheeks can actually sit on the seat (and for the record we have both lost weight since gran's house). Last night we slept on the banks of the zambezi river, and I mean literally, we arrived at 2 am and waited until 9 am to cross the river, no tent no mozzie net. argh. tonight will be better. and I've also prewritten a travel blog ... read more
