Geo: 47.1661, 0.238081On the bus this morning, Rolinka had us all do buddy introductions. My tour buddy is Larry from Thousand Oaks; we interviewed each other at dinner last night. He began and said a few things about me, including that I'm a legal secretary. Then he went on to say that I am a somewhat accomplished traveler, and that during one of my travels I was arrested for art forgery. Hilariously, the bus went just a little bit more silent than it already was, and I heard someone behind us say, "Really?" Larry said that as a consequence of my legal bills, which I was unable to pay, the law firm forced me to work for them as a secretary. I thought it was a riot, but I think a few people weren't so sure ... read more

Geo: 47.1661, 0.238081We checked out of the Best Western at 8:15 and met our new driver, René, who despite the name is Dutch. He was wearing a watch with the biggest face I've ever seen and when someone mentioned that they were intrigued by his watch, Rolinka said it was because he doesn't want to wear glasses so he needs a big watch. This is the guy who's driving us around France! On the coach (which, by the way, is called the Heidebloem, which means "heather flower"), Rolinka gave us a quick rundown of French history, all the way up to President Sarkozy, who is known as Monsieur Bling-Bling. We were on our way to see one of Francois I's chateaux, so she particularly wanted to give us a bit of background on him. He was a ... read more

Geo: 47.0829, 2.39658We were all out the door with our luggage by 8:15 this morning to meet our Flemish driver, Jean (who somewhere along the route got a call from his daughter telling him he's going to be an Opa next year), for the journey to Guedelon and then Bourges.Except for 15 minutes at a rest area (which was a helluva lot nicer than any rest area I've ever seen in the U.S.), our first stop was at Guédelon to see a 13th century castle being built. When I saw this bit on the itinerary, I thought, "Meh." But it wound up being absolutely fascinating. Some rich French guy who "collects" castles thought it would be fun to actually build one, and to build it in exactly the same manner, method and style they would have ... read more

Geo: 48.8667, 2.3333I don't believe I've mentioned the weather yet. Well, maybe I did, but it bears repeating. It's warm. It's really warm. All I packed were long-sleeved shirts and a pullover. I'm dying! And it's not just that it's warm (close to 72F today), it's also humid. Most of us in the group have been going out without jackets, but the Parisians ... the Parisians figure it's autumn and damn if they're not going to dress for the season. I can't believe they don't feel the heat, especially in the Métro where it's like being in a toaster oven. They've all got scarves tied fashionably around their necks, and they're wearing layer upon layer upon layer. I've yet to see a Parisian remove a layer. Fortunately, my room has air conditioning! Geo: 48.8667, 2.3333Well, I was right. I woke up at 12:45, 3:15 and 5:00. I managed to get back to sleep each time, except at 5:00. I stayed in bed till about 5:30, but there's a bit too much traffic noise to get back to sleep, so I got up and did some stretching. It's now 6:00 a.m., and I'm trying to figure out how to access my Gmail account and also trying to Skype John. More later ...LATER: It's been quite a day, and I think Rolinka is trying to wear us out so much that we'll be compliant for the rest of the tour.Breakfast was the usual nothing special, but somehow still good. I love Nutella! How come this has never caught in the U.S.? Rolinka gave us a brief Métro lesson, and then ... read more

Geo: 48.8667, 2.3333 My flight from SeaTac left 25 minutes late, but we got in to Heathrow just five minutes late. It took a little while to get through Security (but at least I didn't have to take off my shoes again!), and I thought perhaps I could make the earlier flight to Paris. When I went to the gate, however, I was told I would have to actually go back to the ticket counters and rebook the flight. By the time I did that, of course, I would miss the earlier flight so no point in even trying. Still, provided my flight leaves and arrives on time, I should be able to get into Paris a lot earlier than I had originally thought, thanks to not having any checked luggage. We'll see. I'm actually writing ... read more
