It was time to speed things up again and this morning we were leaving for Roma. It was a 620 am train to catch and this time we had asked the hotel to reserve one of the 2 taxis in town to take us to the train station. Our local train took us to Milan, the fashion capital of the world. This was apparent in the train station itself as thousands of commuters and locals were on their way to work dressed to impress. We transferred in Milano to our train headed to Rome, which was also filled with commuters in suits. We enjoyed the ride which included snacks, newspapers we couldnt read any other first class amenities. The Eurarail passes we had included mostly first class tickets which was a nice treat. Nonetheless, the trains ... read more

Several more trains with connections in Milan and Como finally got us on a local train to Varenna, one of the many small towns on Lake Como. It was nearly 9 pm when we got there, nearly 10 hours after leaving the Alps. We decided to walk to our hotel from the station which may not have been the best idea. It was a long hot, up hill hike. Our hotel was on top of a hill so several inclines later we were there. The hotel was a multi story building but since it used to be a hermitage, the levels were broken up by gardens, lake view terraces, and a chapel. Our room also had a perfect view of the lake, which we had to relish. We changed for dinner and walked down to town ... read more

Our last morning in the Swiss Alps started with breakfast at our hotel and some play time in a children's playground with the backdrop of the mountains. Amazing. We had a long day ahead as we headed south to Italia. A cable car, two buses, and 2 trains we were back to Lucerne where we would take a few more trains down to Lake Como. We had just moments for such and ran to get something traditional Swiss for the last time. We enjoyed a cheese and butter pretzel which we hoped would hold us over. The train ride through the south of Switzerland was met with more gorgeous lakes. They were a color unlike anything we had seen before, crystal clear...but blue. When we tried asking the conductor to explain the color but were unsuccessful ... read more

We were ecstatic about starting our full day in the Alps. Our hotel recommended that we have breakfast in Schiltorn, which was the highest point you could be as a visitor. It was in the 40's so we bundled up with as much as we could. Since we deliberately packed light and were going to be in so many different climates, our Swiss Alps gear was limited. We took a cable car from Gimmelwald to Murren and then a vertical cable car from Murren to the summit. Visibility was limited because we were literally in the clouds. It's definitely not something one who has a fear of heights should try. :) There was a huge multilevel structure that looked like something out of a sci fi movie and on one level was a rotating restaurant where ... read more

As we mentioned, the trains through Interlaken into the Swiss Alps provided breathtaking views. Glacier lakes, gorgeous mountains peaks surrounded us. After 2 trains, a bus, and a cable car to the near top of the mountain, we reached our hotel in the midst of the Swiss Alps around 7 pm. We couldn't believe how high up we were. We checked in and were greeted by sweet and gracious manager, Sabine, who oriented us to the space. We went next door at the youth hostel, which was buzzing with energy, to use the 5 francs for 48 hours computer and stopped to meet the friendly staff. We decided to stay there for dinner and had traditional Swiss meals, quiche and salad, baked cheese, pineapple and onion dish, and had great conversation with a couple from Colorado ... read more

The train ride into Switzerland was exactly as we expected it to be...breathtaking. The transfer in Geneva meant seats for us on the train to Lucerne. We took a number of pictures as we rode speechless at the absolute beauty of the country-mountains, lakes, countrysides... We arrived in charming Lucern in the late afternoon and took a cab to the hotel though we could've found our way by foot if it hadn't been pouring. We checked into the hotel and relished the view from our window of a typical street in Lucerne. We settled in quickly and asked for directions to old Lucerne, which was only a 15 minute walk. We quickly realized that Lucerne was not too big and very walkable. The old part of Lucerne was beautiful with a river flowing through the city, ... read more

We left the Cote at the break of dawn looking toward a day of many trains. We were sad to leave the Med Sea but excited to visit Switzerland. Here are some reflections of ours looking back on France. Please note these opinions are based on just a few days in this great country: * It's true that the French strongly prefer you speak their language but the number of positive interactions we experienced outweigh the negative * Parisians are as friendly as the people of any big city * France was clean, safe and has outstanding infrastructure-trains, buses etc. * People of all ages take great pride in their appeareance * The countryside was beautiful * Paris was so accessible despite everything you hear about this world famous city Now, on our way to Switzerland, ... read more

We woke up in Villefranche with a view of the Med Sea clearly before us. We had to run a couple of quick errands like doing much needed laundry (which was an adventure) in itself and going to the Eurarail office in Nice to change our tickets to Roma. We explored Vieux Nice and walked the Promenade des anglais, which was essentially a boardwalk. What made it interesting is that it was paid for by the British who would come to the coast to vacation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Promenade_des_Anglais). Lunch was oceanside in Nice which was swimming (pun intended) with tourists from all over the world. Grilled vegetables and a mozzarella salad were on the menu for this meal and were fine. We remembered reading in our Rick Steves reference books that one should lower their palate expecations when ... read more

When we hopped onto the train we realized that we didn't have seats, and it was a good 4 hour journey. So, we sat next to one another hoping no one would claim the seat. As expected, first a gentleman and then a woman passenger came to claim their seats. Both of them who first spoke in French and then switched to English when they realized we were not natives, were nice enough to take other open seats but we knew if other passengers came to claim those seats, we would have to move. So, for the first 30 minutes it was an uneasy journey as we had to be ready to move at any second. Fortunately, everything worked out those both of them had to move at least twice and didnt even ask us for ... read more

Europe » France » Burgundy » Dijon June 17th 2011

Dijon: Early Tuesday morning, we hopped on our first train in France to Dijon. A first class ticket made the journey so comfortable as we were both able to lay down in the compartment. We reached Dijon, a small town in the Burgundy region on our way south, in a matter of hours. We didn't have set plans on where to go and what to see in Dijon so we decided to just explore in the 4-5 hours we had available before our next train. We found a hotel near the train station who we were able to convince to let us leave our bags there. This was after trying 3 other hotels. We headed to the tourism office and took a map to the city. They informed us of a free bus that would take ... read more
