Florence Ok... this is getting ridiculous. Arrival in Florence went smoothly and we walked to the directions on the map to our hotel. However failure on Indy's part (I will admit this one) to write down or remember the name of the hotel created some difficulty. Arriving at the area where the hotel was supposed to be, we quickly realised that there were about 20 hotels in the immediate vicinity and we were unsure of which one it was. So... we had to trek back to Macca's to get on the internet (love the free wifi) and check my emails, but of course, the wifi in Maccas wasn't working. So leaving Not Indy to watch the bags in Maccas, I walked for the next 15 minutes trying to find an internet cafe and eventually found one, ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Pisa November 8th 2010

Pisa This will be a short blog entry. We only stayed in Pisa for one day and after checking into our hotel (about 100m from train station - good forward planning Indy), we walked towards the one and only Leaning Tower. On the way we thought we better grab some lunch, so yes, we had pizza for lunch in Pisa. We walked up to the tower and it was a little bit cool - we took some of the usual photos that all the tourists took holding up the tower. They'd just done a lot of restoration work on the tower so it was gleaming white. But after spending about half an hour there, we checked out the surrounding piazza then walked back towards our hotel and through the centre of Pisa - we had gelato ... read more

Europe » Italy » Liguria » Cinque Terre November 8th 2010

Cinque Terre It was a very very long trip to Cinque Terre after the massive night in Rome - we have to stop having big nights the night before we travel! Anyway we arrived in a small town in the Cinque Terre region called Manarola. Getting off the train, we were greeted by some of the most unbelievable views of the Mediterranian sea and cliffs as far as the eye could see. Very excited. We strolled into Manarola and found the post office where we were to meet Marta, who would be taking us to our apartment on the shuttle bus. I snuck off and got a gelato (very helpful in getting the stomach settled), and by the time I got back, Marta had found Laura and we said hello - Marta's English wasnt very good ... read more

Roma (That means Rome!!) True to form, we once again struggled to find our accommodation in Rome. A number of very nice Romans assisted us to navigate to our hotel though. However this is where the problems really began. Arriving at our bed and breakfast (which we had thought was a hotel), we discovered that there was no one there and we couldnt get into the apartment. Problem #2 - we tried to telephone the owner, but discovered that the number had been disconnected. We telephoned booking.com to see if they could help and they managed to give us a new number, which we rang straight away. Problem #3 - the lady that answered the phone spoke no English, so we couldnt understand a word she said. So we rang booking.com back to see if they ... read more

Europe » Italy » Veneto » Venice October 15th 2010

In what could only be described as an episode of the Amazing Race, your two adventurers had some minor difficulties in making their way from Zagreb to Venice. A check of the Eurail guide and the internet showed that there were a few options getting from Zagreb to Venice, however a check with the railway information guide gave somewhat conflicting information. Apparently only one train to Venice and it leaves just after midnight. Minor panic due to accomodation bookings were had by one of your faithful adventurers (Editors Note- this was Jord), while the other (Ed- Laura) showed coolness under immense pressure to identify a new route that would get us to Venice before the sun went down. A trip to Slovenia, then to a little town in Austria called Villach ensured that we made a ... read more

Europe » Hungary » Budapest October 15th 2010

In what is fast becoming the standard for Eurotrip 2010, your two famous adventurers once again had some difficuty navigating their way to the hotel in Vienna. Asking the locals did not help on the first occasion, with one lady directing us towards Mother Tereasa, and to this day, I still dont know what she was talking about. I'm not going to go into a lot of detail with the Austrian part of this trip, the highlight of course being the few days we spent with Caz. However, we did manage to relive some Oktoberfest songs with a bunch of German high school kids who were on their end of year trip (with their teachers), who were dancing on tables and singing all the songs from Oktoberfest - we did what we thought was right... we ... read more

An interesting start to Prague - arriving at midnight in a foreign city can be a little bit daunting, especially when you discover that the street signs are well hidden. Consequently, there was a certain someone within the team (a.k.a Laura), who was beginning to get more than a little bit worried about muggings and robbery. However, the linguist of the team, who quickly adapted to the local dialect, was able to converse with the locals to find the hotel. Arriving at the hotel, we quickly noticed the flyer on the bench top for a local pub that was showing AFL Grand Final #2, albeit at 6am the next morning. So we did what two loyal Collingwood supporters would do - set the alarm for 5:30am and jumped straight into bed. Still struggling to orientate ourselves ... read more

Munich We just spent five unbelievable days in Munich. We arrived on the afternoon of Monday 27 September and immediatly went for a wander on down to the Oktoberfest grounds to see what it was like. The party was going absolutely crazy. We walked through a tent (it was about 5:30pm) and there were people dancing on their seats, music playing very loudly and drunken debauchery was rampant. We knew we needed to get involved, but managed to restrain oursleves (mainly due to the fact that we couldnt get a seat). A quiet night back at the hotel and we were bright eyed and chirpy for day 2. We went down to breakfast for a quick feed before heading downtown. As soon as we walked into the breakfast room, we quickly deduced that breakfast was not ... read more
