I returned to Quito from Galapagos for two days to try and arrange a biking trip to Cotopaxi. Luckily the Biking Dutchman had a small booking for Friday 7th. For the two days in Quito I made the mistake of staying at El Cafecito. From the outside it looks nice and the restaurant/cafe serves good, but pricey food, but the rooms need to be redecorated, the beds are probably the worst I´ve had to sleep in so far but for 7USD, you get what you pay for. For the day of cycling, there were 4 of us in the group and were driven by Fernando, our guide for the day, to Cotopaxi National Park. Entrance to the park was 10 USD (I believe a discount can be given for students or volunteers upon production of a ... read more

A trip to Galapagos wasn´t my travel plan originally due to the costs. However, after talking with some other students at the Spanish School, I decided to book a cruise anyway and I didn't regret the decision. Day 1 - Friday 23 April - Santa Cruz Island I flew from Quito to Santa Cruz and transferred to the yacht which was to be home for the next 8 days. There were a total of 11 people on this, the first part of the cruise. There was a good mix of nationalities in the group - people from England, Germany, Holland, Italy and the USA. After a quick lunch the first afternoon was spent on Bachas beach, Santa Cruz island, where we saw sea-lions and Frigate Birds. We were surprised at how trusting the sea-lions on the ... read more

12-16 April The week was spent in Spanish lessons. During the week, one lesson in Salsa convinced me I´m going to need loads more to be any good. Sat 17 April I took the cable car from Teleferico to the top of the mountain which overlooks Quito but the sky was too cloudy and couldn´t see down to Quito. Hoping the clouds may clear I waited for an hour but no luck. I returned to Quito after approx 1 hour. Felt quite tired by the time I returned to Quito - assumed it was due to the altitude. Sun 18 April - As it was bright sunshine and clear skies when I awoke, I returned to Teleferico the next day. After the 20 min cable car trip to a height of 4100m, I was able to ... read more

By the end of the week of studying I was ready for a break. For the weekend, the school arranged a trip to Banos - centre for acivities. The town is approx 4.5 hours from Quito. We left Quito at 07:00 on Saturday morning and after a brief stop for a coffee/food we arrived in Banos around midday. The hostel was in a quiet part of town halfway up a very steep hill. The rooms are clean and each having it´s own private bathroom. After collecting our bicycles, we cycled away from Banos into the country admiring the sights. After about an hour, we stopped for some lunch for approx 1 hour and continued on cycling for the rest of the afternoon. Around 5pm, we stopped cycling and walked through the forest to a viewing ... read more

5-9 April - I enrolled with Simon Bolivar - on (Easter) Monday morning and started lessons on Monday afternoon. 4 hour lessons each morning. After 4 days brain was swamped with new vocab and grammar rules - to make things worse I keep mixing up French words with Spanish - much to the amusement of my tutor. I also left the hostal and am staying with a family in Quito so that I can endeavour to improve Spanish faster. The family lives in an apartment at the end of the Mariscal area of the city. The apartment has four bedrooms with and annexe for a servant (I guess). This is proving much harder than expected as only the mother speaks a little English. The two sons are away - one studying in Barcelona and the other working ... read more

Flew from Madrid during Friday afternoon and arrived approx 1 hour late at 20:00. The taxi to the hostal took approx 15 minutes. The hostal (L´Auberge Inn) is situated between the old and new city. The hostal is owned by a Swiss man and they are currently expanding the building to include a Swiss Bistro on the ground floor so there was quite a bit of actvity going on over the weekend. The room I have over looks the nice courtyard which the guests can sit and eat/drink in. The room is small but it has it´s own bathroom and the best bit is it´s only 11USD/night. The choice at breakfast is good - continental, americana and the healthier option of fruit juice and fresh fruit salad (strawberries, pineapple, melon and a couple of others I´m ... read more
