Days 49-56 18-25 March Queensland An afternoon flight from Auckland to Brisbane, an overnight stop in the city and we were on our way to the tropics. We flew Business Class to Brisbane, thanks to Emirates’ free upgrade. I nearly messed this up. In the departure lounge we were called to the desk and told we had ‘different’ seats. Thinking we were about to be given dodgy seats on the wing tip, I went into challenge mode for about 10 seconds before R realized this move was definitely to our advantage. A shame this was one of our shorter flights - 3 hours or so - , but it was good to be able to stretch the limbs, listen to the refrain of ‘More champagne, madame? and its inevitable reply of ’Yes, please’ from the lady ... read more

Days 45-48 14-17 March Auckland Last few days in NZ were really enjoyable. An early morning departure from Hahei to drive round the Coromandel Peninsula to Thames, then to hit the main Highway 1 again to Auckland. It’s always a pain packing up the car in the rain, but we realized that, in spite of not having the best of luck with weather, this was the first time we’d had to do this on our entire trip. Wipers working well till we approached Thames. From then on, the sky cleared and we sailed through central Auckland, and crossed the harbour bridge to Devonport. Devonport, on the eastern end of Auckland’s North Shore, is rightly billed as one of Auckland’s most desirable suburbs. Handy for the city, with a 15 minute passenger ferry to the bottom of ... read more

Days 43-44 12-14 March Coromandel Peninsula Frost on the car as we left Taupo reminded us that summer is running out of time in New Zealand. One more stop before Auckland. Another p******e. Captain Cook had beaten us to it again. Is there anywhere that man has not been? His suitcase must be sticky as hell with all the bag tags from his travels. The Coromandel Peninsular, east of Auckland is spectacularly beautiful. We headed for most people’s must-go destination area: Mercury Bay. So named because Cook stopped off in the bay to observe the transit of Mercury for some reason. Round here, the NZ tourist board must love him. There’s Cook’s Beach and there’s the lookout point at Shakespeare’s Cliff with a well forged plaque to JC, complete with a description of QE2’s visit (that’s ... read more

Days 40-42 9-11 March Taupo & Rotorua The sun stayed out for the journey from Napier to Taupo. Spent first part of the journey looking in the mirror for Oddjob chasing behind. ‘So….Mr Smith….You decided not to play? Mr Big is not pleased…. He will charge your Connect Card for the full amount….He will also be reporting you to the Royal & Ancient. You vill be blacklisted at all golf courses in New Zealand…. For life… Enjoy your holiday….vile you can…” Having shaken off Oddjob, we found Dermot and Barbara’s B & B in the hills above Taupo. This area of New Zealand is geologically very active. The more famous Rotorua is just up the road. The whole region spits heat and hot water from the ground. Far below, all those things in your geography book ... read more

Day 39 8 March Wellington-Napier The road to Napier on the east coast of North Island still gave us plenty of hills to make the Sunny use second gear occasionally, especially in the first hour out of Wellington. A sunny Sunday morning drive through sheep shearing country. World championships are held around here. Lots of places advertise demonstrations. You can even have a go yourself. I amused myself by trying to spot the ones who had been shorn by a ham-fisted tourist. Maybe they’d have bits of loo paper stuck all over them to staunch the bleeding from the shaving nicks… Needless to say, I looked in vain. Napier looked good in the sunshine. Our B & B, on top of Bluff Hill, overlooking the sea and the town centre, was a haven of luxury. Instead ... read more

Days 35-38 4-7 March Hokitika - Wellington Another big drive day, which meant ignoring several interesting or beautiful places. We did ignore one not so beautiful place - Greymouth, which in the drizzle looked like it should. We stopped for breakfast at Punakaiki and did a 30 minute photo click and stroll to the Pancake Rocks (see photo). The stretch of coast between Punakaiki and Westport was as good as the Great Ocean Road, with a fairly wild and active surf to keep us interested. The highway then cut across from west coast to north coast via another winding road through another wilderness up the Buller River Valley to Murchison. It was a bit like going through several areas of France almost simultaneously- the Buller Valley was at first the Ardeche, then the Dordogne , then ... read more

Feb 28 - March 3 Wanaka, the West Coast and Hokitika Three nights in Wanaka was going to be too long when we arrived in the grey drizzle, but things got better. Wanaka is well liked because it has a friendly climate, sits on a beautiful lake and is surrounded by impossibly handsome mountains and hills of all shapes and sizes, from hillocks and outcrops to near vertical mountains layered into the distance. Looking north from the ‘town’ is what you’d get if you asked the average 8 year old to draw some mountains and then embellish them with a bit of snow on top. From Wanaka you can see some snow on top. When the clouds are too low to see any of this and you have to make do with looking at the BP ... read more

Days 29 & 30 26-27 February - Te Anau & Fjordland - South Island, New Zealand The weather wasn’t encouraging, nor was the forecast. You come all this way to one of the most breathtaking areas of the world and it’s misty, drizzly and you can’t see much beyond the Sunny’s bonnet. That’s partly because it’s 7 in the morning. Dawn hasn’t quite broken and eyelids are still at half-mast after not enough sleep. We begin to say the unsayable to each other: Is this going to be worth it? We’re setting off to do the 120km from Te Anau to Milford Sound to catch the cruise boat to see the place everyone says is unmissable. Well, it may be unmissable, but we’re going to miss it cos you can’t see a bloody thing for the ... read more

Mon 23 Feb - Wed 25 Feb Arrowtown & Queenstown With the New Zealand petrolhead revolution quashed, presumably because the hoons had either run out of petrol or beecause Dad wanted the car back or there’d be trouble, we left Christchurch on Monday morning, looking for signs of a military coup and a place to have breakfast. There were none of either. A dreary drive south from Christchurch in the rain on Highway 1. Drizzle turned to rain and memories of an abandoned, rain stopped play holiday in Scotland sprang to mind. The mountains were there on the map, but hidden under low cloud - it could have been Norfolk. A quick stop in Geraldine gave us the impression that the most popular activity there was quilt making, if the range of magazines in the newsagents ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Christchurch March 1st 2009

Days 24 & 25 Sat & Sun 21 & 22 Feb Christchurch From Sydney in the warm sun to Christchurch in the cool drizzle is maybe a bit unfair on Christchurch. No-one had said that Christchurch was exciting and it certainly wasn’t, but we had a good time there, thanks to the company of MarynDick, friends from Winchester travelling the other way around NZ. Bit boring to describe our motel. I won’t bother. It was comfortable enough and cheap enough for a couple of nights and on one of the four avenues which form a square around the centre of the city. Mine hosts were Jif and Windy, who were getting to grips with running a motel, having taken over only a couple of days before. The previous owners either were keen royalists or they were ... read more
