Happy Anniversary – to us! 39 wonderful years. Today we arrived in Stockholm Sweden. When we got up we were still sailing through the archipelago of islands around Stockholm. It provides very scenic views as we sail slowly past the little cottages sprinkled on numerous islands. We learn later in the day that about half of them are summer cottages but the other half are lived in all year round. There is a year-round schedule of little boats that shuttle back and forth to connect people to Stockholm. While cruising, there were many seagulls flying around the ship looking for scraps – one passenger on a balcony below us started feeding them out of his hand (in flight) with pieces of bread. We were in line behind two other cruise ships coming into port, and there ... read more

NOTE – There was a problem with the Shipboard Server and the Blog could not be posted last night. This morning Janet had made an appointment in the Spa to have a manicure at 8:00, so she had to get up kind of early after having watched the movie last night. She got up and dressed, and headed to the buffet for breakfast, and then on to the Spa to have her fingernails painted. Now they are a dark red and very shiny. The Spa also included a hot stone and ice hand massage. After the Spa, she went on to the Adagio Bar to meet with her Knitters & Natters group, where she worked on some knitting. Apparently she does it differently than the others in her group and they were all marveling at her ... read more

As the old Danny Kaye song goes: “Wonderful, wonderful Copenhagen, Friendly old girl of a town, 'Neath her tavern light On this merry night Let us clink and drink one down. To wonderful, wonderful Copenhagen Salty old queen of the sea Once I sailed away But I'm home today Singing Copenhagen, wonderful, wonderful Copenhagen for me. “ Anyway, we’re here in wonderful Copenhagen today. We sailed in and docked about 8:00. One of the first things we noticed as we entered the port were a whole series of wind turbines standing out in the water – apparently generating electricity. We had had a good night’s sleep and we went up to the buffet for breakfast before docking. One of these days, we may try to sit-down breakfast, but this is easier and much ... read more

Ahoy land-lovers. We have been out at sea all day today, and had a very relaxing time of it. Well, pretty much restful. David got up about 8:00 and got some coins from the Customer Service Desk so he could do a few loads of laundry. Our theory was that it’s better to do this before everyone else got lots of dirty clothes too – we had all the London and travel outfits to rewash. Unfortunately, there were others who had the same idea (also had pre-cruise clothes to wash), so he had to go to the Laundromat one deck down – the machines on our deck were already in use. Anyway, he got three loads started washing and then went to get some breakfast in the buffet. Janet got up and passed David in the ... read more

Today we docked in Zeebrugge, which is one of the ports in Belgium on the North Sea. The ship got here about 7:30 AM and our tour departed at 8:15. So before that we had to get up, dressed, and fed for the morning. We went up to the buffet in the Horizon Court and sampled some of their standard breakfast fare – omelet, baked apple, bacon, sausage, pastries, juice, tea and milk. Then we headed to the Explorer Lounge for a very short wait before they called our tour. There were multiple buses taking the same tour, so that shows us that the selection was popular. Certainly it sounded like the most interesting to our point of view. When boarding the bus they provided each person with 2 pieces of Belgian chocolate – VERY rich. ... read more

Today we embark on the next stage of our vacation – aboard ship. Before we completely leave the London phase, let us give more description of the hotel. The best attribute is certainly its location. We are within short walking distance from a tube station, as well as plenty of stores, banks, and pubs. Since we were “on foot” that was an important point. But it was also close enough to a major intersection that the tour buses dropped tour passengers (like us). Probably we could have gotten picked up at one of the nearby larger hotels, but we didn’t try. Next best attribute is probably the helpful and friendly staff. We don’t want to make this sound like a commercial, but they were all very nice. On the “down side” is that the hotel room ... read more

Hello again from London. Before we begin today’s descriptions, let us explain that there were no good photos from Kensington Palace because we could not use the flash inside. We got a couple outside pictures, but the ones inside weren’t very good – too dark. We got a better night’s sleep last night, but David still woke up for a couple of hours during the night. So we are still feeling a little remaining jet lag. We left a wake-up call and got started at 6:30 again this morning. Rather than have the hotel’s breakfast, we got ourselves packed and headed for the Underground. We caught “the tube” to Victoria Station (only 4 stops away on the District Line) – so it worked just fine. We needed to walk to the same Coach Station as the ... read more

Hello from London. This is our first full day and we have a lot planned. We left a wake-up call for 6:30 AM and then tried to get a good night sleep last night. All went fine for awhile, but then David woke up about midnight and could not get back to sleep. After a few hours he fell back asleep, but altogether we both were still a bit jet-lagged this morning when the wake-up call came. We got up, dressed, and packed up the room before going down to the free breakfast at 7:30. This breakfast was a good example of not getting anything more than you paid for. There was some juice and Janet got a cup of tea. There was bread that we could make into toast and some cold cereal, but nothing ... read more

Hello from London. We are here! We are happy to report there was not a single mechanical hick-up with our flight (unlike Elizabeth’s adventure). Anyway, we are here in London. The flight boarded and departed O’Hare on schedule last night. Our plane was pretty full but we didn’t have any problems with the seats or getting our carry-on luggage stowed – it was a fairly new American Airlines 777. However, anyone who thinks that jetting off to Europe sounds like a comfortable trip, well they probably are not thinking about flying Economy Class. We had two seats on the starboard side (one window and one aisle – as planned), but these seemed to be more narrow than in the past. The weather was pretty smooth much of the way, but somehow the pilot found bumps in ... read more

Today is departure day – the trip begins! Over the previous weeks we have gotten very excited in anticipation of today, but it is finally here. Yesterday was very busy with last minute stuff. The bags have been packed and repacked several times as we try to decide what to take. The cruise ship would happily allow us as much luggage as we wanted to bring, but that pesky airline has a more punitive baggage policy which requires careful selection of only the essentials. The final choices have been packed (one bag mostly packed with what we will not need until the ship and the other for the things we expect to use in London) so we are all set - both under 50 pounds. David performed a last minute mowing of the yard Tuesday, Janet ... read more
