I returned to Changzhou from Shanghai on Sunday because of the wedding on Monday. The wedding was nice and the food was great, though it was quite a bit calmer and more understated than what I'm told is the traditional Chinese wedding. Most of the international department was there, and I finally got to meet Neal's then-six-month-old daughter, Olivia. (It turned out to be absolutely essential to have a Chinese speaker lead me around, as these cities had very little support for English speakers.) So a day after arriving back from Shanghai I took the one-hour bus ... read more

He was going to study Chinese in Shanghai for awhile and look for work, though not of the usual English teaching variety; he actually had some sort of job working for Expo 2010 (today's version of the World's Fair, the 2010 incarnation of which will be held in Shanghai, just over an hour from Changzhou, and about which I coincidentally wrote a paper junior year at Vassar!) when he was last there. We had been chatting only a ... read more
