After spending last weekend’s 3 day holiday weekend cooped up on my room, I decided that the following weekend, I best get out of town if not only for a day. I mentioned my destination to my students, Leshan, and 2 girls told me they had never been, so they would accompany me. At first I was hesitant to accept their company, but admitted to myself that it would be helpful to have their verbal skills at my disposal. So we set up the plan to meet in front of the school at 7am sharp, Saturday morning. Leshan is a small-ish town about 3 hours from here, it is known for having the world’s largest Buddha and that is all. A nice day trip I thought to myself. Saturday morning I meet my 2 students ... read more

A quickie, but nonetheless entertaining... I was asked to judge an English speaking competition at a local Petroleum company, I agreed, however I was not overly enthusiastic about it. After agreeing to it, I was told that usually people get paid for this type of thing. Finding out that my English status was being exploited I was less than thrilled to oblige. I get picked up by a vehicle around 1pm on Thursday, I was escorted by Daphne, from the foreign affairs department, and another teacher from another University campus joined us. We pull up to the building where I see a sign that says, "China Lubricant Blending Factory." I smother my giggles and avert my gaze from the guards shamelessly staring in the windows. We get out of our vehicle and are escorted to some ... read more

Back to blogging…my absence hasn’t been due to lost enthusiasm, quite the opposite. Life here has settled down to where the absurdities now seem normal. Buying my fruit and vegetables at the market no longer evokes sweaty palms and a racing heart. I visit a few vendors who recognize my face and only speak Chinese to me out of habit. They all know that I will smile and nod no matter what they tell me. The latest fruit to arrive in season are mangoes, as I walk the streets few ballsy vendors call out to me, “Mango, Mango, Mango!!” When they call out in English is when I know they’re talking to me. I smile and acknowledge, but try not to encourage them by walking over. If I did someone the courtesy of obliging their ... read more

The morning comes all too quickly, but with a lot to be done, I don’t dilly-dally. I’m out the door and heading to the bus stop before my body even recognizes the day has begun. The Terracotta warriors were interesting, not a lot to see though. The statues are housed in three separate buildings. I tear through the buildings with effortless speed, only interrupted by requests for pictures. We are at what most consider to be the premier archeological site of China, and they want a picture with the white girl… I wrap up that adventure in record time and head back to the bus stop. I catch a painfully slow minibus back to the train/bus station and look for my next bus to take me to Hua Shan. I luckily stumble upon the bus to ... read more

A weekend adventure with me goes something like this… A few hours late arriving into Xi’an (She-en) didn’t take the hop from my step, but it did slow it significantly. I exited the airport expecting to see my hostel van waiting with balloons and streamers welcoming me, but was met with nothing. A quick phone call sorted out that confusion…they thought I was arriving at 11am. All right, plan B, airport shuttle. They take me to the middle of town and unleash me. A quick glance to the guidebook tells me there’s a hostel up the road and around the roundabout (which is huge, it has 5-6 lanes encircling a large pagoda). I set off (which a little help from some nice ladies on the bus), it is about 1:30am and the streets are pretty much ... read more

This weekend I had the privilege to celebrate some sort of national holiday with China, all I did to participate was take Monday off school. Originally, I tried to get a plane ticket to leave town but was too slow on the draw and didn’t make it happen—however, I’m all set for NEXT weekend in which we have a three weekend again, due to a track meet here at the school. Therefore, I devoted my time this weekend to getting a lot of schoolwork done, as well as going into the city with two of my students, Carol and Shen Shaolin. But before my stint into the city with my students—another student made me aware of another America living in the city. Intrigued, I accepted his phone number when my student offered it. He and I ... read more

The foreign affairs department was kind enough to escort Hua and I into the downtown area of Chengdu. We are about 35-45 minutes away, in a 'suburb' of Chengdu, called Xindu. The main area of Chengdu consists of about 4 mega shopping malls. We walked through some of them, lots of over-priced items (they all have import taxed tacked on, so brands from the US are about $5-15 more expensive), and the women in the different sections of the departments wear the same thing. So for example, all the clerks in the ESPIRIT section wear the same outfit, then another clothing brand has its own assigned uniform-down to the boots/shoes. We walked to Tianfu square, which is the center of downtown. You can see the giant white statue of Mao lording over the park. In my ... read more

A few of my students wanted to invite me out over the weekend. Originally I *thought we were going to journey somewhere to see the Pear Blossoms, but either I was confused or they changed their minds. We ended up taking a cab about 10 minutes away to a nice park. The name of it I think involves a B, I, G, and U-maybe an O in there somewhere, but it is the place to go on weekends to relax and kick back. It's very large with lots of walking trails and benches to sit and relax. There is a nice river way passing through the park and rocks with poetry etched into them. The most popular activity is to sit and drink tea and play cards or maj jong (which I saw many people doing). ... read more

My first two weeks of teaching have been a blast. The first week was filled with meet n’ greets, which take little to no planning, so that week was a breeze. The questions they wanted to ask me were of the most hilarious nature—my favorites were of course, “Do you have a boyfriend and will you be taking a Chinese boyfriend?” They all want to know what Alaska is like but moreover they want to know how they measure up to American college students. I’ve been invited to many of my student’s homes in various villages and provinces all over China. I’m invited shopping and out to meals, which I have yet to accept. I think I’ll wait for a few more weeks of classes to go by until I start doing extra-curricular activities with them. ... read more

I hung out with Zu Yong again (you may remember him from such adventures as “My Special Adventure” where I was drawn by a classroom full of Chinese students), I met him at the campus gates and he waved his arm (as if to say, ‘hey, follow me’) so I did. After walking a few blocks it occurred to me that I should know where we were heading, he told me we were going to meet one of his friends at the Music Conservatory. There is another University nearby which is strictly for the arts: Music, painting, singing, digital arts, etc. I have been driven by the campus and it looks rather nice. Along the way Zu Yong attempts to speak with me, which takes enough of our concentration that we slow considerably on the sidewalk. ... read more
