Its been some time since we last wrote. We left Torres del Paine quite exhausted and in need of some comfort. When we arrived in El Calafate we chose a very comfortable hotel to stay in for two nights. Our main purpose in this area was to visit Perito Moreno, a massive glacier which can be seen from quite close. The glacier was indeed beautiful and massive, with the most fun part being the waiting for chunks to break off and fall in the water. One was especially dramatic: given that the glacier is about 70 meters in height a chunk of ice falling off makes for a pretty large splash! Another sight that we considered was hiking up Mount Fitzroy, a few hours away from El Calafate. However, since the weather predictions weren't looking too ... read more

If we still needed anything to detach from work then our hiking in Torres del Paine did it. A wonderful park with mixed weather and beautiful sights! When we arrived in Puerto Natales a bit past midnight, we did not have a place to stay yet. Luckily we slept an hour or two on the bus so we were fit to find one. Walking around the dark streets of mostly residential neighborhoods we knocked on any door that said Hostel, of which there were quite a few. Full, full, full. After a bit over half a hour we found a nice place though. Ricardo, the owner of the hostel didn't seem to mind the late hour and elaborately helped us with suggestions of how to best go to and hike in Torres del Paine. The two ... read more

We are now in the bus on our way from Ushuaia to Puerto Natales. From Tierra del Fuego to Patagonia. First part was in a mini bus, but for the remaining 12 hours we are in a big bus. We are now a bit more comfortable than in the minibus, but with the downside that this bus is a much easier target for the heavy winds. A few moments earlier the wind blew open one of the air vents in the roof, which now does not seem to close anymore. On our right we can see the Atlantic Ocean from time to time, with the wind pushing the waves even higher. Its quite a nice way to travel, the trip is a bit long but the views are great! We spent three nights in Ushuaia. The ... read more

Just 2 more nights and then we will leave for 3 months with our backpack. The trip is long in the making, but we are pretty much ready. Bags are mostly packed and the apartment is ready to hand over for the sublet. We'll try to keep this blog up to date with interesting things we may experience and perhaps a photo now and then. Don't fear for our lives if we don't post for a while: we might just be enjoying ourselves too much, or be without internet; or both :D... read more

The drive to Johannesburg took longer than we expected. We read that it's not a good idea to travel in South Africa by night, but we didn't make our destination during daytime. Besides that, we took a path Google Maps suggested (slightly shorter than the next best one) which involved ~2 hours of driving through serious potholes. This delayed even more our arrival time. Our host, Dan, was very welcoming and very chatty. The place was well located (Graskop) and had everything we needed (the kitchenette was very useful).
