"A good start is half the work" - Irish Proverb We are very excited to be travelling again, this time to Ireland! Our flight to Dublin (via Toronto) leaves mid-day tomorrow, so no crazy early morning required. This trip is shorter than our usual ones, just 12 days from start to finish, but still time to see a variety of the country, and, we are sure, to have many pints of Guinness! We will start our trip in Dublin - and yes, we have our timed entry to the Guinness Storehouse :), and then head out on a 3 day tour of southwest Ireland. Then it's back to Dublin for a few days, followed by several days in Belfast. Like many North Americans, I have Irish ancestry. I grew up with my maternal grandmother telling us ... read more

No one recognizes how beautiful it is to travel until he comes home and rests his head on his old, familiar pillow- Lin Yutang I‘m writing this sitting on the couch, watching Coronation Street episodes that we recorded while we were away, having a coffee in my Moroccan mug, and eating macarons from Paris! Pretty nice. It’s a lovely sunny day today. I may rouse myself for a walk later or I may just stay on the couch ?. We got back about 10 pm the day before yesterday, after a long journey home. We were up early on Tuesday for our flight home. Our alarm went off at 5:15, and we finished packing, and making sure everything was ready to leave our apartment. We took it in turns each going down in the elevator with ... read more

We’ll always have Paris - Humphrey Bogart to Ingrid Bergman in Casablanca Today was our last day in Paris - tomorrow morning we fly back home. I can’t believe we will be home tomorrow at this time. After 25 days of travelling, first to Morocco and then to Paris, it’s going to be quite an adjustment being back at home. I’m happy to return to the comforts of home, but sad too, that this trip is finished. But now, back to today. We finished the last of our breakfast supplies, and headed off to the metro for our short trip to Notre-Dame. We got off at the Cité stop, and planned to go to Notre-Dame first, but suddenly as we walked down the street we came across Sainte-Chapelle. Ok, great, we’ll to to Sainte-Chapelle first. After ... read more

We had another beautiful day in Paris, starting with our breakfast in the apartment, then taking the metro to the Musee d’Orsay. We stood in the security line for a short time, and quickly got into the museum. Immediately I liked the museum, housed in a former railway station. It was far less busy than the Louvre, and it was much easier to find our way around. The art was beautiful, and I found the place had a peaceful feeling about it. It really was lovely. We must have spent at least three hours roaming around, enjoying all the exhibits. It was pretty amazing seeing so many works of art that we’ve seen in books or maybe owned prints of (like Manet, Renoir, Degas etc). I especially liked seeing Degas’ sculpture of the ballet dancer because ... read more

We had my favourite Parisien breakfast this morning of pain au chocolat and cafe creme (strong coffee with hot milk) at a little bakery a few doors down. We enjoyed it at a sidewalk table, in the chilly morning air. Paris, or this area of Paris, seems to wake up slowly. Even a restaurant that serves breakfast didn’t open until 9:30. It was a lovely breakfast and exactly what I had in mind when I thought of Paris when we were planning the trip. We headed to our now familiar metro station and hopped on line 11 to Chaletet Les Halles, as usual, and transferred there to the RER B train just one stop to St Michel-Notre Dame, then transferred to the RER C train to Versailles. We were on the correct platform, but we must ... read more

We had a glass of champagne at the top of the Eiffel Tower today - my Paris visit is complete! :) We had a light breakfast in the apartment this morning, and left around 8:30, heading to the Louvre Museum. We walked the couple of blocks to Rambuteau station (now I know the right direction!), took line 11 two stops (well, one stop because the next stop is closed), connected to line 1 and took it a couple of stops to the Palais Royal Musee du Louvre stop. The connections involve a lot of walking, and lots of stairs. We followed the signs to the Louvre, and found the right entry to use with our museum passes. The passes worked great, we didn‘t have to wait in the line up, and got in quickly. We got ... read more

Travel brings power and love back into your life- Rumi We have had a very fun first full day in Paris, doing a full day Urban Adventures walking tour (a combination of their morning tour called Secret Paris and their afternoon tour called Gourmet Marais). Raphael was an excellent guide, and we ate lots of food and drank lots of wine! But first, back to this morning. We slept well in the apartment, although there is lots of noise from the street in our room (in the front). Mom has the quiet room in the back. We wore our ear plugs and it was ok. We had a light breakfast in the apartment (yogurt and toast with peanut butter and marmalade, coffee and orange juice). Then we confidently headed out to the nearest metro station, Rambuteau. ... read more

The more I travelled the more I realized that fear makes strangers of people who should be friends- Shirley MacLaine Greetings from the City of Light! We arrived safely and managed to find Mom at the Charles de Gaulle airport :) We had an extremely early morning, with the alarm set for 3 am. I woke up at 2:54 so I didn’t even need the alarm (or the back up alarm). We showered, sorted our bags, and were downstairs in the lobby before our pick up time of 4 am. The driver was there early, so we set off for the Mohammed VI airport in Casablanca. It generally is a 40 minute or so drive to the airport from central Casablanca, but it was faster since there wasn’t much traffic at that hour. In case I ... read more

Would you know we’re riding on the Marrakech Express, They’re taking me to Marrakech, All aboard the train, All aboard the train - Crosby, Stills & Nash Sorry I had to do it. That song is stuck in your head now right? We actually took the train in the opposite direction, from Marrakech to Casablanca, and here we are back at the Kenzi Basma for our last night in Morocco. We had a light breakfast at Riad Challa this morning, still both not feeling too great. Susan is much better than she was though, and I feel better than I did yesterday. We had some scrambled eggs, baguette and cheese, and yogurt. There was lots of fresh fruit but we thought it wise to skip it. There was a small buffet in the reception area, and ... read more

Our battered suitcases were piled on the sidewalk again; we had longer ways to go. But no matter, the road is life. - Jack Kerouac We are now back in Marrakech for the last night of our tour. I woke up this morning feeling like crap, and unwillingly dragged myself out of bed about 9:30. Susan was feeling better this morning, and she went down for breakfast, which I skipped. She brought me back some yogurt and bread. I slowly got ready, packing up and showering. I felt a bit better after the shower. Our group has been dropping like flies. Practically everybody has gotten sick, to various degrees, even Abdul. Four of the group had to go to hospital for treatment, all with gastrointestinal problems. After Susan got back from breakfast we headed off on ... read more
