Christchurch English (Lisa) 29/1 The Day McGregor Bird (aka ART137) Flew Away and We Almost Did As Well We reached the point of being very attached to our campervan. We lived in it for 3 weeks and to be quite honest, it also starting smelling and looking like that. The wooden storage space in the campervan was in desperate need of a wash. It had become quite sticky from some of the food/fluids in there. Furthermore, the milk carton had leaked in our cool box the 27th, now resulting in a awful sourly smell coming towards you when you opened it. The coolbox was placed on plastic bags because it had a massive crack -caused by previous hirers- in the bottom of it through which the ice water left the cool box, and entered the storage ... read more

Arthur's Pass English (Lisa) 28/1 Arthur’s pass is one of the best known highways in New Zealand. It connects the westcoast to Chirstchurch. We read and heard that driving on it would be quite adventurous, so we only expected to reach a campsite located 2 hours away from Chirstchurch. The road turned out to be about the same as some of the ones we’d already driven on. It went through some valleys and over some hills. There were plenty of lookout points along the way. At some point we drove through a valley and everywhere around us were mountain ridges ranging from looking nearly black to being covered in light grass. Another infamous local specialty was the Kea. Birds that literally eat EVERYTHING. Even if it’s not edible, they’ll still repeatedly try to nibble on it ... read more

The West Coast - Fox Glacier English (Lisa) 26/1 For the first time in 3 weeks, there’s really not an awful lot to say about this day. It has been pouring with rain since we woke up. Excellent conditions to spend a day sitting in the kitchen/living room of the holiday park drinking tea, listening to the Beatles and playing ‘doorslaan’ (even though I was the inventor, I very much suck at it). 27/1 When I opened my eyes this morning I could see a wonderful blue sky. Brilliant start of a day that would only get better and better. After some skyping we left for Fox Glacier. First, we walked to a viewpoint and past it up till the point were the road was closed due to falling rocks and ice. Then we did another ... read more

Punakaiki & The West Coast English (Lisa) 25/1 We left Reefton this morning to see the Pancake rocks at Punakaiki, a town located at the West Coast of the South Island. Panakaiki is known for its Pancake Rocks and blowholes. I always wondered how on earth something like these Pancake Rocks could have been formed and now I finally know. The Pancake Rocks consist of layers of limestone and mudrock. The distinctive shapes of the rocks are caused by the wind and water slowly breaking the rocks down. They are beautiful and very impressive to look at. We continued our way along the west coast. Evening had already kicked in when we arrived at our Holiday Park near Fox Glacier. Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Kaikoura January 23rd 2011

Kaikoura English (Lisa) 23/1 Today, we went to the widely known weekend market in Nelson. It turned out to be a small market where people sold their own stuff, some of them sitting in the trunk of their own car. Obviously we didn’t spend much time there and left for Blenheim. Blenheim is probably a nice town, given that it is not raining and not a Sunday. To arrive at the camping ground we’re at today you have to turn left on highway into Pihu Pihu road. First things we saw: a sign warning us that it is a narrow gravel road we’re driving on (two cars cannot pass each other) and some horned creature crossing the road with a mouth full of leaves. This camp site is best described as being very ‘outdoorsy’. Basically it ... read more

The Golden Bay English (lisa) 22/1 After seeing the beaches yesterday, we instantly decided to spend today (then it was still called tomorrow) on the beach. When we arrived, the tide was high and no beach was to be seen. We installed ourselves in the dunes waiting for the low tide to kick in. At the end of the day, a sandy, 40 meter wide beach had been formed. Some other people were there as well, but the beach never became something even close to crowded. I love beaches and can’t resist collecting all pretty shells even though there’s no way we can take them all with us. So… we’ve made them into a piece of ‘art’ (see picture). The South Island: Abel Tasman National Park English (Lisa) 20/1 Camping Ground, Car, Ferry, Car, Bethany’s Christian Camp We travelled an awful lot this day. At 5.30 p.m. we arrived at a camping ground, which turned out to be a Christian one. Both of us thought that we’d finally become used to the Kiwi accent. That was until we reached this place. The sentence ‘d’you want the ice in a bag?’ had to be repeated three times in the supermarket before I finally understood it. All vowels are pronounced in a very funny way - especially the ‘i’ and ‘a’/’e’/’ea’. Related to that question, what’s quite strange is that everywhere in New Zealand they pack your groceries in thin, black, plastic bags for you. They must go through tons of those each year. 21/1 Coast Walk ... read more

The Capital: Wellington English (Anouschka) 18th January 2011 The longest drive so far, to Wellington, started off in the rain. Because it’s been dry for very long and there’s all kinds of oil and dirt on the road, it was quite slippery too. After the first small slip we were forced to use the break with a little more caution. Late in the afternoon we arrived at the holiday park closest to the city center and, more importantly, the ferry terminal. We agreed to meet Lisa’s ‘achternicht’ Tessa at the Te Papa Museum. She took us out for a drink in one of those bars you would never find as a tourist, although it’s located very centrally. After that, we walked around the city and the harbor. The atmosphere of this ‘windy city’ (they are right ... read more

Finally some rest... and Napier English (Anouschka) 16th January 2011 Today we were in for some rest. Yes: shocking, maybe we’re getting old! We decided to book one more night at our beautiful spot in Tongariro National Park. Time for sleeping in, doing some laundry and tidying up the van (for those of you who are familiar with the day-to-day state of our rooms back home, this should not be surprising). Later in the day the sky cleared. As a lot of muscles were aching after yesterday’s workout, it was time to loosen them up a little bit. The camping ground is in the centre of the national park, so it wasn’t hard to find a nice walk close by. We walked to ‘Silica Springs’, another of those nicely (in this case: red/brownish) colored water springs. ... read more

Tongariro Alpine Crossing English (Lisa) Saturday we woke up at 6 (- a.m. that is), in order to be at the starting point of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing hike at 7:30. This hike is one of the most popular 1-day hikes of New Zealand. It is 19,4 km long and encompasses 800 m of climbing and 1100 m of walking down. As you can see on the picture, trying to get back down the mountain sometimes isn’t as easy as it sounds. In the first part of the hike we went through a volcanic area. Only low vegetation was present and the landscape was very rocky. Everywhere, you could see lava – if you spot a black rock on the pictures: it’s lava. The views were stunning. Sadly Mt Doom was partly covered in clouds today. ... read more
