Currently in Banff, Alberta (Canada) sipping on a hot coffee and feeling like absolute crap. I think the last few months of travel have finally caught up with me. Figured I'd rest up today and try to update my travel blog. Okay Seattle - the 'Emerald City'. After the early morning dramas in Detroit, I was grateful to reach my gate and step onto the plane. I REALLY feel sorry for the couple that was sitting next to me on the flight - shoddy AC and me sweating booze from the previous night out. Once we touched down at Sea-Tac airport I hopped onto the light rail into downtown and walked the 6 blocks to the hostel. I think my back is getting stronger from all this heavy lifting .... either that or my spine has ... read more

After catching two trains and a bus, Paul and I finally arrived in Detroit. While it wasn’t the longest train trip I’ve taken, it had to be the most tiring because of the inconvenient arrival and departures times. The train out of Philadelphia left around 12:40pm Tuesday and we arrived in Detroit at 7:30 the following morning. Thankfully our hotel was able to check us in early so we didn’t have to lug our baggage around and hotel management didn’t have to deal with us snoring in the lobby. It really was a win-win situation for both parties. Downtown Detroit has been the closest I’ve come to visiting a ghost town on this trip. Paul and I were amazed by the large number of businesses that had either closed down or moved to another smaller location. ... read more

I’m currently sitting in Seattle-Tacoma International Airport waiting for my flight out to Vancouver. Here’s a quick rundown of what happened in Philadelphia. After dropping off the rental car and getting a lift to the Amtrak station, Paul and I were able to swap our tickets for an earlier train to Philadelphia. Like the trip out of New York, the ride down to Philadelphia was quicker than we expected - I think I was two bites into a chicken wrap by the time we arrived at the station. Since the local hostel was booked out, we decided to stay in small hotel downtown. After New York, we thought it was ironic that we landed back in a similar part of town in Philadelphia. Our running gag of “We’re together but not together together” continued for a ... read more

After having a heavy night in one of the many dive bars found within Hell’s Kitchen, it was a case of struggling to get our stuff organised for our train ride down to New Jersey. I have noticed that we have a habit of drinking too much the night before our departure date. There was some drama on the train down to New Jersey. The Amtrak agent behind the counter gave Paul the wrong ticket (the destination was the same but the time was incorrect). Being fans of the Indiana Jones trilogy (we both refuse to acknowledge the existence of the last “movie”) we were expecting Paul to be thrown off the train in a manner similar to the scene from “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade”. Thankfully we were at our destination by the time ... read more

I’m currently in Seattle. Figured I’d get a quick update out since I’m just lounging around in the hostel’s common area. My last post provided details about my stay in Chicago. If chronological order is anything to go by, then this update will be covering my stay in New York. Paul and I arrived at Penn Station (just below Madison Square Garden) an hour behind schedule - our train from Chicago was delayed once or twice. The 20+ hour journey wasn’t very eventful for the most part. The only interesting thing that happened was when border control hopped on and questioned internationals about passports etc. At this stage I was sporting a scruffy beard and wasn’t looking in the freshest of states so I was worried about getting carted off the train. Someone did get escorted ... read more

I’m currently on route to Detroit via Pittsburgh and Toledo so I guess it’s time to add that Chicago update. I left New Orleans in the afternoon and touched down in Chicago later on in the evening. This was actually my second visit to “The Windy City”. My previous adventure back in 2007 only lasted a night and I think we spent most of that time in the hotel bar and other institutes of seediness. This time around I was planning on seeing more of Chicago and taking in an architecture tour. Yes, I’m a sophisticated individual. After catching a cab downtown, I caught up with Paul a fellow West Aussie. Paul will be joining me on my travels around the east coast. We’re basically on a miniature rock n roll junket. After Chicago, we’ll be ... read more

Once again, I apologise for the lack of updates. It’s been pretty hectic these last few weeks and I’m a couple updates behind. I’ll hopefully get onto the Chicago and New York updates while travelling from New Jersey to Philadelphia. Judging by my previous record it will most likely be while journeying across to Detroit from Philadelphia. Okay okay, I can hear you motioning for me to hurry up and get on with it. /roll ye olde historic camera footage/ My last update had me spending some time in San Antonio - a day and a half in total. After walking all around town I basically did my best hobo impersonation for a couple of hours and slept out the front of the San Antonio Amtrak station until it finally opened. Being such a small hub ... read more

I decided to spend a little more time in Austin - it’s very difficult to get away from the town’s laid back environment. Did my best to walk around town and take in some attractions - the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, the State Capitol Building and the local university. I spent most of my afternoons down by Barton Springs pool floating around and not thinking about anything. A couple of us from the hostel walked down to one of the nearby bridges to watch a colony of bats fly around town - supposedly the largest urban colony in North America. Since none of us were interested in having to deal with the after effects of falling guano (bat excrement), we opted to find a spot on the bridge rather than under it. Unfortunately for ... read more

Arrived early Thursday morning and made my way over to the local hostel - there’s only one in Austin. After securing my bunk for the next few nights, I made my way down to Barton Springs Pool. A man-made recreational swimming pool located on the grounds of Zilker Park. The pool exists in the channel of Barton Creek and is filled by water from a larger spring. Water temperature ranges from 20 to 22 °C. It's the perfect remedy to a hot ass Texas afternoon. Spent a couple hours cycling through the many modes of relaxation - a quick swim, soak in some sun, dive in and float around, soak in some more sun and read. It’s a hard life. So far, hostel life in America has been different to what I originally expected. It’s nothing ... read more

After touching down in Houston late Tuesday evening it was a quick cab ride to the motel for a good night’s sleep. I was expecting it to be warm in Texas but I wasn’t expecting it to be so humid. I was half tempted to have a late night dip in the motel pool, but opted out due to the water colour - Texans either celebrate St. Patrick’s Day later than the rest of the US or that pool needed a good dose of napalm. I decided to go with the cheapest mode of motel to downtown transport the following morning. The bus is slow but cheap, and it allows you to get a better understanding of your immediate surroundings. All I can say is that the area I stayed in was colourful - not in ... read more
