you actually ate with your hands! impressive ;) hope the next part of the trip will be fun and nice. sorry to hear about those scamming porters...
14th December 2012

Only with the right hand! ;)
It's a bit messy, but fun! The thing with the porters was more blackmail than scam. Never experienced such a thing before, incredibly how the local authorities don't do something against it.

Harlots in the mosque....
When I read this section of the blog my heart sank. I think you did the right thing to tell the German woman to cover up. You're really just trying to protect her. Why some Westerners choose to ignore this is beyond me and is really just pitiful. Really enjoyed this blog.

The poor caretaker...
Thanks for the comment, Anastasia! :) I guess Cyprus is a country that attracts a lot of holidaymakers who are not very aware of intercultural sensitivities. But it's really not all that difficult to be respectful on a very basic level, so people should be told when they're out of line. Cheers, Jens

Fashion victim? Hardcore Buddhist? Nazi?

:)
Yeah, that cross still has its original meaning in some places. It is strange. strange to see it so casually put on so many things in Asia. If it wasn't for the Nazis, it probably would be adopted by the hippies. Check out this building that we photographed in India. - http://www.travelblog.org/Photos/3634452

Gentle swastika
Hey Mell, thanks for commenting. There's a bit of a movement going on within the body modification scene that wants to reestablish the peaceful, positive connotation that the swastika had before the Nazis. Some people are getting visible tattoos of different variations of the swastika, even Germans, despite the fact that it's illegal to do that here. It still plays an important role in Buddhism and Hinduism, as you saw in India. It has been their symbol for more than 2,000 years, so why put it to rest just because some idiots in Europe used it for their own, sick purposes? Cheers, Jens

No map in the book store????
Imagining this scene had me laughing out loud. :)

No map of Klang anywhere...
Thanks for the comment, Anastasia. :) Yeah, we had a good laugh afterwards about the weird experience that was Klang.

Misanthropic?
Helping those German girls wasn't bad for a misanthropic humanist!
4th October 2012

Well, sometimes the humanist part of me takes control, if only for a moment ;) Thanks for commenting!

19th September 2012

You should go!
Malaysia's a pretty cool country, can't think of any reason why I wouldn't go back there.

Wrong Spelling
Bro...you had the wrong spelling and most likely you pronounced it wrong Actually I is SAYA in Malay not SAYU as in sad
19th September 2012

Oops...
Thanks for the correction, mysterious man. I always get confused with saya, saja, sayur and satu. Now you added another one to that list. :)

Jarman!
Love how you react to interactions with locals and officials! Always a great read.

Cheers!
Thanks a lot for the comment, Andrea. Glad you enjoyed reading my little blog.

Glad you are enjoying sumatra...travelling by bus!
You are a brave soul Jens..I know what you mean by the roads - I dont think I wouldve done them by bus if possible but without an airport its a bit difficult ;) Dont you just love the way people in Sumatra ask you about you? We arent a walking wallet there, we are a curiosity yes but lets hope it stays that way for a while. For all Sumatras difficulties its well worth visiting.

Quite an adventure off the gringo trail! Border and bus nightmares turn into friendly villagers and sites seem by few of us foreigners--thanks for taking us along!

Kanjung Aro village

Keep that paranoia going Jens...
...it has always served me well too :) Nice palms by the way....reminds me of those wonderful specimens in the movie 'Full Metal Jacket'.....

Paranoid humanoid
Thanks for the comment, Nick! I'm sure paranoia will keep following me, it's something that clings on to some overly keen observers. And you are right, those palm trees look straight out of Full Metal Jacket! Cheers, Jens

A tale of adventure
So much to absorb in this wonderful blog - shows the excitement and adventure in travelling to places where few others tread. I might borrow the treating foreigners "like a walking ATM" line when somebody tries to ridiculously overcharge me in the future.

The real adventure is only coming up...
Thanks for reading, Shane! Today I arrived in Padang, where the surf crowd hangs out, and it was the first time in a week I've seen another foreigner. Quite an interesting feeling. Hope to take the plunge into the real adventure when I take the boat over to the Mentawai Islands. :) Cheers, Jens

Say it like you see it...
Definitely agree that blogging the truth about a place is better than the sugar coating, everything is wonderful blogs we read! Sometimes though our telling the truth has let us in for a bit of abuse via comments and messages! Sorry you didn't enjoy Kapas as much as you expected, but those beaches do look lovely! It was on our list of places to go but now we aren't sure whether we will go now as we hate it when we feel like we are 'held hostage' by lack of choice for food and drink. Thanks for the blog.

Thanks for reading!
Thanks for the comment, Donna and Neil! I woudn'tr necessarily say Kapas is bad, I guess it all depends on your expectations. If you love lazing around on the beach, then it's probably a good, low-key island for you. I just didn't like the, like you said, being held hostage. It felt a bit like that sometimes. Cheers, Jens
