Yet again, I start a blog with apologies for how long it has been… I’m beginning to sense a pattern here!! The truth is, as always, I’m lazy, I never have enough time to do anything, and I don’t think I’ve been doing anything of note. But then I do realise that what to me is “nothing of note” may actually interest some people. So what I’ve decided to do with this blog is share with you some of the things which make up my daily life over here. Since I last wrote, things have just been carrying on as normal. We’ve got one more month left until the winter holidays, and it will be nice to have a break. I haven’t really taken advantage of any of the long weekends we’ve had so far this ... read more

So, I finally start the long-overdue recap of my summer travels... lets hope I can remember them... Being a teacher, I get extremely long summer holidays, which is nice... so I decided to make the most of them. I had decided to go to the north-east of Argentina. I had no real plans, I knew I wanted to visit a couple of places, maybe head into Bolivia... it was more a question of how long my money would last and what I felt like doing. With that in mind I made my way, backpack on my back once more, to the bus terminal in BsAs. Ahead of me was 16 or so hour night bus to Salta. Salta la linda Salta is the most developed of the NEastern provinces of Argentina... and it is pretty. I ... read more

Now, I'm well aware that I've been extremely lame at writing here ever since I settled in Shan Ishidro. The truth of the matter is a) I'm lazy b) I never seem to have time... and that's it really. To be fair, if there wasn't a huge rain-storm going on outside, leaving me stranded in this tiny shopping mall that happens to have an internet cafe, I probably wouldn't even be writing this now. It's now January, and I've been travelling round the NE of Argentina for the last 10 days or so. But this blog is going to be about what I did towards the end of last year, and then I'll write about this trip once I'm home and dry. So... what have I done since last November? Well, school is done and dusted ... read more

So yes, it's that time again. Time for Emma to update people on her life in the land of Diego Maradona and Evita... (I wonder how long it will be before I run out of cheesy Argie comparisons...) Since my last update (48 days ago I'm informed by the TravelBlog people) life has continued to swim along. I turned quarter of a century at the beginning of October and celebrated with a party chez-moi. I had to work on my birthday, which was rather strange as I haven't had to do any kind of strenuous activity on my birthday since I was at school. But it wasn't too bad. Both my evening classes were quite relaxed. I had a picnic with my adolescents and had cake with both them and my adults. Then in the evening ... read more

Well.... it's been a while since I actually sat down in front of a computer and wrote anything... so I guess it's time I filled everyone in on what's been going on over here in the land of corned-beef. Interestingly enough, I haven't actually had any corned beef since I arrived here... Since my last blog, my time has been taken up with teaching... or trying to teach. I started mid way through the school year, which, whilst being an opportune time to find employment, also creates some problems. Mainly in that the students have had since March to get used to one teacher, and are now faced with someone totally different. This is especially important for lower level students. I teach at International House, in San Isidro, which is an international organisation. In the school, ... read more

Picking up from where I left off on the previous blog, once I found a job, it was time to look for a place to stay. To cut a long story short, the school knew of someone who was renting a house, I went to see it, loved it, and moved in 2 days later. Somehow I've really landed on my feet. My landlord is lovely. On the day I moved in he took me out to lunch at this awesome restaurant overlooking the Río de la Plata and also took me food shopping. The groceries I had to pay for, but he let me use his 10% discount. But anyway, this blog isn't about how grateful I am to him. I decided that as it's still the winter holidays and I don't really have many ... read more

...for a while!! Bueno, aqui estoy... or maybe I should say aca estoy! I've been in Buenos Aires for just over a week now, and it's fair to say I've fallen head over heels for the place... it didn't really take long! But let's starts at the beginning shall we? Beware tho, this may turn out to be a long one, so make sure you're sitting comfortably!! I left LA on Monday 14th July, and was flying with LAN, a Chilean airline, which apparently is the best in South America, and I would back this statement. I only have one bad thing to say about them, and that is they let me down on the size of the plane. I already knew what seat I was sitting in, as that had been allocated way back when ... read more

North America » United States » California » Los Angeles » LAX July 13th 2008

So I had finally made it. Los Angeles, the City of Angels, was to be the last stop of my North American tour. And it was a brief stop. I flew in on Saturday night and would be leaving on Monday morning. Once again I flew with Virgin America, and once again I was on the Dark Horse. Unfortunately, or maybe that should be fortunately, there was no entertainment from the cabin crew. I was left in peace to write my journal. It was a relatively short flight from San Francisco - less than an hour. And it was just as quick to get through the airport. In the arrivals area there was a freefone on which I could ring my hostel to get picked up. That was the main reason I had chosen this hostel, ... read more

...in San Francisco So following on from my previous blog, I left Vegas to fly to San Francisco. I was flying with Virgin America, a fairly new domestic carrier. From the moment I got on board I was impressed. Having never flown with Virgin before I don't know if this is the norm or not, but they employed mood lighting throughout. This was some kind of purple light, which made the cabin look almost comfortable. All the window blinds were also closed, in an attempt to keep some of the heat out (it was 105 farenheit outside, at 10.30am). Apparently the in-flight entertainment is supposed to be really good - the same kind of facilities you have on long-haul flights. I say apparently as I was flying on what is commonly referred to as the Dark ... read more

After arriving back at my hostel following the Cirque de Soleil show, I was looking forward to just passing out in bed, knowing the my alarm was set for 5.15am. Unfortunately, when I arrived I realised that new people had moved into the room, one of whom was sleeping in the bunk above me. However the bed hadn't been made. Therefore, they would have to make it when they returned. It was already gone midnight when I got back, so any visions I had of even 4 and 1/2 hours sleep uninterrupted were quickly disappearing. Nonetheless, I put in my earplugs and put on my eyemask and hoped for the best! My worst fears were soon proven. Around 1.30 2 girls came back and whilst they didn't make too much noise, it was more the rocking ... read more
