Suffering for shards I worked in the sweltering jungle for six weeks on an archaeological dig in the jungle outside of Tikal, Guatemala, and for our grueling, exotic and beautiful 60 hours a week, we found only pottery shards. After we'd mapped what were probably houses and small temples in the dense jungle, we dug down to bedrock and sifted the dirt for 'treasure' that is, shards. Hard work but interesting. I then bailed as the others spent the rest of the boring summer putting the shards together.
Going potty All that hard work to have an idiot like me say "God no more pottery shards, I'm going potty". Yes I can appreciate the significance but it is my lack enthusiasm for fired clay. 10 points to you for doing the hard yards to find stuff I am bored with, and doing a job I am envious with. Please correct me if I am wrong but I would reckon finding it would be more exciting than looking at it in a museum.
The new and the familiar Traveling so often involves the excitement of discovering new places (the wild roads), but sometimes it's just so lovely to revisit places you love--Batumi, Tbilisi, restaurants and a favorite cat. How refreshing to discover museums with more than pottery shards and propaganda--well-done, Georgia!
brokenpotteryitis The museums in Tbilisi were so great because they were filled with lovely shiny things and with English text. I have seen so much broken pottery over the years that I have developed a phobia to it, and really don't want to see another piece. I absolutely love museums but over the years have become a bit of a snob about them and selective on which ones we go to - it maybe because of that fear of broken pottery. If in Tbilisi we can recommend there museums.
Bondi it ain't We both have "delicate" feet and found it incredibly painful to walk across what is in fact just river stones. Go through all this pain to discover that the water is freezing - not what we would call fun.
'we...started to aquaplane'! I thought you were going to say you hit the poor cow... :( I love hearing of people's new favourite cities, so now that we are back home and have a bit more time to read than when we were travelling, I'll have to re-read all your Tbilisi blogs again. Looking forward to tales from Armenia :)
The fun of travelling by bus in the wet We were in a bus in Brazil that aquaplaned and ran off the road in the wet, and it isn't a very pleasant feeling. This Georgian bus trip was perhaps one of the more scariest we have done and we were sure glad we didn't hit the cow. And I guess the cow was happy about that as well, although it was walking down the middle of the road at the time.
Hate to leave the kindness of strangers. Good having your own transportation. Sometimes we like leaving the driving to others but it is always nice having a car, a little space and not lugging everything all day or worrying about where you set it down. Glad the replacement car was quick. When that story started I was worried it could take a couple of days for a replacement. What is wrong with you not wanting to live in a cave cut out? As we travel we are so sick of the selfies. I think you remember our rant on that from Egypt. They should be flogged.
Flogging is too good for them Do remember your memorable rant in Egypt, and give you a 10 out of 10. We have both tried to restrain our selves about bagging the selfie (unsuccessfully), but man it gets up my nose. See nothing wrong with taking a photo or two of yourself but the non stop staring into a mobile phone screen is beyond tragic. We always blame the Kardashians but unfortunately I don't think it is that simple.
tits Your related to a man that is fluent in tit talking . Tits surpass all language barriers and due to my height or poor posture I have had many conversations with tits . So I toast you Ramos and your Russian tit talking .
It was the best of times, the worst of times A dead KIA, talking tits, Stalin the hero, a police helicopter descending on the selfies and an attack on vegans--yikes! But then there were the incredible hosts at the guesthouses, lovely Ramos, amazing cave towns and a perfect medieval fortress. Georgia is turning out to be a true adventure!
The glass half full Thanks Tara for tagging along on the journey, Georgia has been full of lots of surprises so far, mostly unexpected - sort of like potholes in the road. We sort of have a bit of a love/hate relationship with the country at the moment but I am sure that by the time we leave it will be more love than hate.
Ghostly man Haha I just love the painted-over person in the painting...and the runny paint marks :) How fabulous were Ramos and his family? I love those sorts of travel encounters, but it's also sad that those moments are so fleeting. I need to get the name of the guesthouse that not only serves a delicious breakfast but also packs up leftovers for your lunch :D
Mestia Guesthouse Guest house Goshtela is where you should head if you ever find yourself in Mestia. The town has hundreds of guesthouses and in fact I think every home in town is one. Ramos and his family were legendary but we were freaking a bit about the situation we were in so didn't enjoy it as much as we would have liked. If we had stayed we were being offered Mum and Dads bed and I am fairly certain that they would have slept on the floor so we really needed to leave. great experience though.
Georgia on my mind Seriously, you have made us want to head this direction. Ok, so what is the deal with the animals. What do you think? Sounds odd. Love to hear your thoughts. Love your critique on the drivers in Georgia. Once again your photos are phenomenal. Good job. The driving sounds .... well crazed. Yikes, the landslides. You are having an adventure. Glad you've had some good food even though some has been bland.
Pack your bags Georgia is a great compact country with some amazing scenery and sights. Transport is an issue with most public transport being minivans and they sometimes pack the people in like sardines. Driving is a good option but hire a 4WD as the roads are BAD as we unfortunately discovered.
What do i choose? This has become one of more all time favourite dishes and could eat it for breakfast lunch and dinner. Of course if I did I may need to find another partner because Michele isn't so keen on this little slice of cheese heaven. The dilemmas of life, Michele or Khachapuri, yet to make a final decision.
