Day 75 - Cessnock We had a leisurely start to the day as most wineries don't open until 10 in the Hunter Valley and a friendly chap in the campsite said he would give us a lift out to our first winery (saving us the taxi fare). We went to about 11 wineries throughout the day (of the 140 in the region) and walked between them all. The women in the wineries could not believe that we were walking for the whole day and I do not think that we saw anyone else walking around...apparently it is fine to taste wine all day and drive between them! They wonder why Cessnock has a high accident rate. The atmosphere was laid back like in Marlborough, New Zealand and in most places you could probably try about 15 ... read more

Day 67 - Sale - Lakes Entrance We made the short journey from Sale to Lakes Entrance fairly early so that we could have the whole day in Lakes. The first point of call was the internet cafe (the first we had seen since Melbourne) before treating ourselves to our first Aussie fish and chips. I persuaded Rob to go for the "healthy" recipe batter, but as with everything, it is never as good as the full on lard version. However, the Gummy Shark was delicious and it was much nicer than the standard fish in New Zealand. After enjoying our lunch sitting outside on our portable chairs we decided to walk the track to the entrance of the lakes. We did a bit of a loop, walking along the lake front on the way out ... read more

Day 59 - Christchurch - Melbourne Not much to tell from today as we said goodbye to New Zealand and hello to Australia! We had the unexpected shock of having to pay departure tax but apart from that the flight went very smoothly and we arrived in Melbourne on time. We had our walking boots even more thoroughly inspected than in New Zealand through customs and we were quizzed as to where we had been walking but we got through OK eventually. We made our way from the airport to our hostel on the Melbourne train system during rush hour, it was really nice to see so many people again and for the first time in a long time we could not walk in a straight line! We did not arrive at our hostel in ... read more

Day 51 - Franz Josef We had a leisurely start as we were off glacier walking for the day but conveniently the meeting point was about 2 minutes walk from our hostel. We got to the office and got fitted up with boots, crampons and any other gear we needed. We then drove up to the car park at the bottom of the glacier and started the 3km walk to the “terminal face” i.e. the start of the actual glacier. Once we got there we headed up some rather handy steps that had been cut into the ice that morning and then headed over the rocks which make up the bulk of the first section. In the first section of the glacier the ice is white (unsurprisingly) and the crevasses run parallel to the valley so ... read more

Once again there are two maps so you will have to click on the hyper link to see them! Day 46 - Wellington - Nelson Today was not the most exciting day ever as it started off with a 3 and a half hour ferry across the cook straight back to the south island and then a 3 hour drive to Nelson. Once we got to Nelson it was all go, mainly because we wanted to get out to the Abel Tasman National Park first thing in the morning and it is about 2 hours out of town. The national park is quite famous and covers a massive area but the main attraction is the 50 km coastal track which we had decided to tackle 30 km of. We went straight to the tourist office to ... read more

Day 41 - Rotorua - Waitomo We got up nice and early and headed for the Zorbing place in Rotorua. Zorbing is the thing where you roll down a hill in a plastic ball but as this is the place that invented it, they charge a small fortune and it only lasts about 6 seconds. A few of our travelling buddies were keen to get involved so we took photos and videos as they rolled down the hill. Then we went to a rather odd little “Theme Park” called Agro-ventures and had some BBQ breakfast. After all this we finally got on the road to Waitomo a town with very little apart from caves with glow-worms and a rather strange bunny farm. Our driver had told us we were going to see some “Bunny Bondage” and ... read more

Day 36 - Auckland - Paihia Today we were up nice and early to get the coach up to Paihia. We arrived up there at about 12.30 and had a little explore and did some food shopping. We actually did nothing at all exciting and had a little read in the afternoon sun on the beach. We went for a BBQ at the hostel next door and had a few drinks and drinking games with all the people we had met on the bus that morning. Day 37 - Paihia In the morning we went on a 4 hour ferry cruise of the Islands in the "Bay of Islands". After cruising around the beautiful inhabited islands we reached The Hole in Rock - which is basically a huge hole in a limestone rock off the coast ... read more

Day 32 - Wellington - Taupo We set off to Taupo today. It was a long drive but we seem pretty immune to long journeys now. Once we arrived and had dumped our bags in our dorm a group of us set off on a walk to the natural hot springs and the Huka Falls. It was a really sunny day so on the way to the falls some of us had a dip in the springs, which turned out to be too hot to be refreshing. The waterfalls were the most amazing blue and were definitely worth the walk. On the way back it was to the springs for another dip. This time we didn't have them to ourselves though with a number of Mouri families taking up the prime spots. It was not the ... read more

Please note to view maps you must click on the titles as there are two this time! Day 26 - Sydney - Christchurch First thing is first - Sydney is a rubbish airport! Not as bad as Paris CDG but still pretty poor. I had visions of Aussie's swigging Fosters and BBQ's but unfortunately it is the same as every airport in the world and you have to pay a fortune for everything - even water (at least at Heathrow you have WH Smiths and Weatherspoons)! Anyways after our 3 hour stop we got on the flight to Christchurch and slept for most of it. We awoke just in time to see some familiar looking farmland on the approach. We then had to contend with New Zealand customs. Turning up in NZ with a British ... read more

Day 21 - Ko Phi Phi We got up really early (about 6.30 if I remember) because we thought we were going to Kayak to Phi Phi Leh which is a few kilometers away. However, we got a text message to say that Katie was not quite well enough so we had to pospone those plans for another time. We sat on the beach for the first few hours of the day and played some more bat and ball. Sarah and I had a wander around the shops; I bought a new t-shirt and Sarah bought a necklace for her sister. After the sun had cooled off in the afternoon we headed up to the viewpoint (which was a much easier walk than previous viewpoints) and looked down over the centre of the island. The view ... read more
