Well, the first week, and sorry there have been no reports. For some reason there are no internet cafes in tribal villages in Borneo! So, a quick catchup. Arrived in Miri last Friday after about 27 hours, including a 6 hour wait through the night at Kuala Lumpur airport, thanks to Air Asia (who also by the way do the WORST airline food - and his from someone who has flown ANA!). Spent the first night in the 5 star Marriot - we thought we might as well get the luxury out of the way! Met up with Tom and Lizzie - great to see Tom after 7 months. On Saturday, flew to Mulu in a twin prop plane - great view of the raim forest - and the palm oil plantations. Spent a few days ... read more

Off tonight! All packed and ready to go. Our first leg is to Kuala Lumpur with Air Asia. Our flight WAS scheduled to leave Stansted 11:20 tonight, due KL 8:30 tomorrow night local time. Got a text message from Air Asia last week: for 'operational reasons', the flight will now leave Stansted 4 am tomorrow! Now due in KL 1a.m Friday! Guess what - last train from the airport to the city is 1 a.m.; last bus to the city is 00:30 a.m. And the airport hotel is fully booked. So, we updated our plans, and booked a flight to Miri, in Sarawak near the Brunei border, for 7:25 am Friday. So depending on our actual arrival time, and immigration, we will have a few hours in the airport. Got a deal at the 5-star Marriot ... read more

In Summer 2008, my passport was in the pocket of my jeans when the jeans went into the washing machine. What came out was a soggy mess. I dried it as well as I cold, and then bought some glue to stick back bits where necessary; it certainly looked washed out! I have just been over to Poland for a few days, and when I came back through Stansted, the passport guy looked somewhat askance at my passport. "have you washed this?" he asked. "Not me, but I know someone who has", I replied. "Not thinking of travelling too far with this are you?" he asked. "Indonesia and India for a couple of months", I said. "Well", he said, "you won't get into those countries with this. You will have to get a replacement." Just what ... read more

The big trip!! We have one way tickets to Kuala Lumpur on 20th January 2010. We have tickets from Mumbai to London on 23rd March 2010. And in between, we shall see what happens!! The (vague) plan is to spend 2 to 3 weeks in Malaysia/Indonesia, where Tom, our son, is currently staying with his girlfriend Lizzie. Hopefully they will show us some of the things they have discovered, such as villages in the rain forest, staying in long houses. Then a flight to Chennai, and the next 6 weeks or so going down to the southern tip of India, round through Kerala and Goa, and finally up to Mumbai for the flight home. Travelling mostly by train.... read more
