South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » La Paz October 10th 2010

The bus from Copacabana was only 3 hours to La Paz but was one of the strangest experiences. All of a sudden we were stopped in a desolate area, the driver mumbled something and got off. After a minute or two of waiting all the gringos on board were starting to get very confused. We eventually realized we were supposed to get off the bus and board a little boat to cross a river, while the bus boarded its own transfer. It was very dark, hardly any lights around us, and quite cold. We all squeezed onto this barely floating boat and huddled together for warmth. Somebody cracked a joke along the lines of us being smuggled into America - and honestly it felt like it. Quite odd... As we drove through the outskirts of the ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » Isla del Sol October 8th 2010

It took us 3 hours to get from Puno to Copacabana, with a quick stop at the border. The four Americans on board were rushed to the immigration office because we had some lengthy paperwork to fill out. All other nationalities got stamped through but we had to fork over a hefty $135USD for our visa. Once we arrived in Copacabana we checked into a very... interesting hostel. It was called 6 de Agosto and at 25 Bolivianos ($3.56USD) per night we couldn't complain. Besides, once we got rid of the bedspreads it wasn't so bad. (We just used our own sleeping bags and pillow cases). Copacabana is even smaller than Puno. The main street is pleasant, it has quite a few shops, restaurants, coffee shops and leads right down to the docks. In the morning ... read more

South America » Peru October 7th 2010

When I initially began planning this trip I didn't expect to spend so much time in Peru, but it is an amazing country and I easily could have spent another month here. One of the most surprising things was the changes in climate. Apparently Peru has 28 and the world's 32 climates. I didn't expect to be in my summer clothes one day, then 4 hours south pull out the long johns. Every city in Peru has a Plaza de Armas, which is the main square. When all else fails, ask where the Plaza de Armas is - everything you need is within a few blocks. Apparently Peruvians are not that creative, they name several streets the same name, which is very confusing for tourists (and taxi drivers). It's always wise to know the neighborhood and ... read more

South America » Peru » Puno » Lake Titicaca » Uros Island October 7th 2010

We gave ourselves a day to relax in Cusco after the Machu Picchu trek then took the bus 6 hours south to Puno. We arrived mid-day, checked into our hostel, The Point, and explored the town. Puno is a small city, densley structured around the bank of Lake Titicaca. It was very quiet, hardly any travelers. We ate lunch at a hole in the wall Cevicheria, which we thought was a bit sketcy, but turned out to be one of the best meals we've had yet. Then we shopped around the tour companies and booked a morning tour to the Uros Islands. We were picked up at 9am and brought to the pier to board the boat with 12 other tourists. Lake Titicaca is the world's highest navigable lake and the Uros Islands are it's main ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Machu Picchu October 4th 2010

We decided to do the Salkantay 5 day 4 night trek to Machu Picchu. At $225 it is half the cost of the Inca Trail (which has to be booked months in advance) and is more remote and beautiful. The night before our departure we had a meeting where we met our guide and group - ours is rather small, just us two and three canadian girls. We were picked up at 4am from our hostel, drove a few hours to Mollepata where we ate breakfast and began our hike. Morning 1 was mostly gradual uphill along a dirt path with the occasional steep shortcut through the shrubs and trees. The hardest part was the heat. After 4 hours we stopped for a generous lunch. South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco September 29th 2010

We booked our overnight bus to Cusco with CIAL bus company, it's a bit cheaper than the others so we decided to try out the cama class. Even though the seats recline back nearly into a bed, I couldn't sleep. (I think I was fearful the strike wasn't actually over and we would get stopped at 4 in the morning). But we made it and immediately checked into Loki Hostel. The Loki in Cusco is well known amongst backpackers. It can accomodate over 200 people in very comfortable and clean bunks. It is a very social hostel with a couple courtyards and a hoppin' bar scene. The tour desk is also extremely helpful and they don't jack up the prices as much as other hostels. People generally spend a few days here to acclimate to the ... read more

South America » Peru » Arequipa » Arequipa September 28th 2010

From Ica we took our first overnight bus 12 hours down to Arequipa. The bus companies in Peru don't have the most reliable reputations; Cruz del Sur is supposed to be the most safe, but a bit more expensive than the others. We got the last two tickets on the bus so not only were our seats not next to each other, but they were right near the bathroom! We were booked in the semi-cama class, which basically like a regular bus seat and only partially reclines (cama class reclines almost all the way into a bed). Lesson learned: book tickets early and make sure you are far away from the bathroom. Arequipa is Peru's second largest city. Most people visit to see the Colca Canyon which is the world's second largest canyon (bigger than the ... read more

South America » Peru » Ica » Huacachina September 19th 2010

We took the local blus, Flores, an hour south to Ica. We then took a 10 minute cab ride to Huacachina, a desert lagoon oasis. This used to be a destination for elite Peruvians but has since been taken over by backpackers (and consequently the maintance of the town has decreased a bit). The town is centered around a lagoon and takes about 10 minutes to walk around. We checked into Hotel El Huachinero - which is a hotel, but they have one 10 bed dorm room for backpackers. This was great because we got all the amenities of the hotel for 30 soles a night (around $10). In the morning we decided to hike up the sand dune just out the back gate of the hotel. Man, did I underestimate how difficult this would be. ... read more

South America » Peru » Ica » Paracas September 18th 2010

From Lima we took the local bus, Flores, four hours south to Pisco. Pisco was hit hard by the earthquake in 2007 and there is still so much damage here. There was massive amounts of construction underway. That, along with the political rally in the main square (right next to our hostel) was a bit overwhelming. Luckily we were exhausted and the very loud street noise didn't keep us up. Street noise aside, our hostel, Tambo Colorado, was quite pleasant. For under $11 we got a private double room with our own shower. We woke up at 6:30 the next morning to eat breakfast and head off to Paracas to tour the Islas Ballestas. It was a two hour boat tour to the "poor mans galapagos." We saw loads of pelicans, boobies, penguins, and sea lions. ... read more

South America » Peru » Lima » Lima September 16th 2010

After 13 hours of traveling we arrived in Lima just before midnight. My first thoughts of Peru were: AHHH! Apparently there are no rules on the roads - or if there are, no one follows them. The cars that get to pass through an intersection are the ones who are most daring, which makes for very scary taxi rides. And the same goes for pedestrians; you basically have to step into the road and hope that the cars stop. Thankfully we survived the taxi ride and checked into Loki Hostel for 3 nights. It was your basic hostel dorm room, no frills, but everything you need (including hot water). At roughly $9 a night I was pretty happy. The next day we walked along the coastline through the beautiful Parque de Amores and just wandered about ... read more
