Geo: -8.675, 115.261Our journey from the dock was.... bumpy. I would say that in the pot-holed road, there were more holes than road. Our 15 minute journey on the way in, took 1 and a half hours on our return (we moored up in a different harbour). I'm not sure which was the lesser of 2 evils, an extra hour on the boat or an extra hour or so on the non-existent road. I'll call it a tie and say I'd like to repeat neither. Our hotel's publicity photographer was a genius. Online, the hotel looked like a sprawling luxury hotel with masses of space and large enticing pools. It was pretty, the bedrooms had princess-style mosquito nets and spacious bathrooms and showers, but in reality the pool was about 15 by 3 metres and the entire ... read more

Geo: -8.35057, 116.057Gili Meno floated into our vision (actually, it was already there, tantalisingly visible across the short stretch of water from Gili T. We even made enquiries as to whether there was room availability a day early to enable us to escape from Gili Trashy a day early, but to no avail. Clever people had already booked up!) as we approached on the 20 minute journey from Gili T. "That is more like it," we both concurred. And indeed, Gili Meno is what we were looking for. Here was the Bounty Island tranquility we had anticipated. Here was the powder soft sand gently sloping down to the clear-turquoise waters. Here was our private villa with a sea view and 2 floors. Here was a stomach bug determined to ruin the experience. Great! Our 2 days here ... read more

Geo: -8.35032, 116.043The alarm sounded shrilly, jolting us into a semi-alert state of realisation. It was G-day. Gili Day. The day we had been waiting for since March. Let the relaxation commence, we thought! After a brief outdoor bathroom experience (I kid you not, there was an actual tree growing out of the side of the bath...), we were met by our driver who transferred us speedily to the boat dock at Benoa harbour. Our pick up time was 7am, with the boat due to depart at 8am, getting us to the Gili Islands at 11am. Everything sounded perfect!Arriving at the boat dock 15 minutes after our pick-up and finding the ticket office closed was the first teeny little dark cloud on the perfect azure horizon. 45 minutes sleep was lost to this one tiny administrative ... read more

Geo: -8.68964, 115.253We left Cambodia at the ungodly hour of 8am, so had to be at the airport by 6am. Not happy times! I was sad to leave this strangely altered half-being of my past, but glad to be moving on the the restful holiday part of our month away. I'm not quite sure how restful 2 hours at an airport, 2 hours on a plane, 4 hours at another airport and 3 hours on another plane really is, but hey ho!When we arrived in Bali, I expected the kind of reception we received in Fiji - garlands, acoustic-guitars being gently strummed by smiling locals, the scent of tropical flowers. Hmmm.... perhaps not! We paid our "visa on arrival fee" at one window, then moved swiftly to the queue where we assumed our visas would be ... read more

Geo: 13.3667, 103.853.30 am. Darkness. Silence but for the gentle hum of the ceiling fan, circulating the air around the slumbering figures in the bed. The serenity is broken with the piercing ring of Scouting for Girls, signalling that the time has come for the dormant bodies to stir and prepare themselves for their pilgrimmage.4am, the same figures stumble into the reception to collect a breakfast box and meet their Tuk Tuk driver for the day. Mr S will be their guide to the temples of Angkor, about 12 miles North of Siem Reap. Having dodged two growling dogs to reach the reception building, the tuk tuk whirring into life and carrying them off into the darkness comes as a welcome escape! The Temples of Angkor were built around 900 to 1200AD and they covered huge areas ... read more

Geo: 13.3667, 103.85Well, we left Phnom Penh on the correct 8.30am bus. 5 minutes into the journey, and Stacey informed me that she had left the drainpipe piece, containing her $100 worth of paintings on the chairs outside the travel agency. Fortunately, the Cambodian people are as friendly and helpful as I remember, and the lovely stewardess called our hotel and asked them to go and find the tube. With no complaints, they did so, and the stewardess arranged to have the pipe sent on the next bus to Siem Reap. I don't imagine it would have been quite so easy had something similar happened in the UK! Bless the Cambodians' endless capacity for assitance! Despite the West seriously jepordising the Cambodian's land, people and culture at the height of the Vietnam War, they still welcome ... read more

Geo: 11.5588, 104.917The following day began with a problem. A phone call at 7am (so much for our much-anticipated lie-in) to tell us our bus was here. "Bus?" queried a very tired, grumpy and confused traveller."Bus to Siem Reap," explained the chirpy receptionist."We are booked on for tomorrow,"I sighed, the panic rising in me as I realised we must have booked the wrong dates. The line went dead. Leaping out of bed, I scrabbled around for the tickets. No mistake, we were booked on for tomorrow at 8.30. Relief was ours. Sleep however, was not.We got ready and went downstairs to get breakfast before our tuk-tuk to S21. "Breakfast? We can't do breakfast,"explained the same chirpy receptionist. This was news to us, having been asked the previous evening if we wanted to pay for our room ... read more

Geo: 11.5588, 104.917Hello from Cambodia! I am once again back in my favourite country in the world, although Vietnam is now giving it a very close run for its money! However, in the 8 years since I have been away, Phnom Penh has become almost unrecognisable. There are still glimpses of the ramshackle buildings and makeshift homes that make up my memories of the place, but along the wide streets of the city are air-conditioned buildings, shops selling gleaming motorbikes by the hundred and 5 star hotels snake along the river-front boulevard, enough to rival any such stretch in the coastal USA.Our 6 hour bus journey passed by with little hitch. One small glitch did threaten to rear its ugly head: I packed my passport photos in my back-pack and stowed it away under the bus. ... read more

Geo: 10.7592, 106.662We got up late, as the rest of the tour group are going into Cambodia with Gap and were up at 6 for a trip to the Mekong Delta, so we lay in and had a late breakfast! Bliss. As we were deciding what to do for the day, the phone rang. I knew at once there was a problem. "Ah, Miss Turner," the voice said, "the room you have booked for tonight is not in this hotel.""What?!" I think the confusion in my voice was evident, as I had taken the booking voucher to reception the previous night and requested to stay in the same room to avoid packing, unpacking and repacking in one day. "The room you have booked is not in this hotel," the voice calmy re-iterated, "It is at the ... read more

Geo: 10.7592, 106.662The following morning was an early start for the final day of our group tour. We boarded our bus to meet our local guide whose job it was to show us the ingenuity of the Vietcong fighters at the Cu Chi tunnels. To our great fortune, the local guide was a war veteran, who had fought alongside the Americans and ANZAC troops for the South Vietnam army, and was happy to answer any questions about the war, his role and his life since then. A thoroughly interesting and charming man, he had seen a fair share of suffering at the hands of the NVA and the Vietcong, and was able to give real-life examples of the tactics used. When asked if he was ever badly injured, he replied, "Only once, I was only slightly ... read more
