So we spent a week in Adelaide wasting time before our trip to the farm land. The hostel was okay, quite cheap because its winter down Sarf and no-one wants to be cold. Apart from the reek of urine in the toilets for the first few days, I quite enjoyed my time there. We spent most days lazing about reading books, exploring the city, and eating our free apple pie every night at 8. Although, I amn't a fan of warm apples, so I ate the lovely pastry as Nicola helped herself to my apples, it was a good deal. Adelaide's quite a nice, well thought out city. The whole centre of it is in a grid, with north sout east and west Terraces, circumfrincing it, with lots of parklands. We were told to go to ... read more

... South Australia. Thats us onto our 4th state now. We should do another one (Victoria) before we're home. However Western Oz, and Tasmania, are the remaining two, which I doubt we'll make. We decided to come down here, because this is coming into fruit picking season also. Its good because we'll all get to stick together now, picking whatever fruit. We flew down overnight, and arrived very early in a rainy and cold Adelaide this morning. This is now officially Australian winter. By my calculations, I might well have seen the last of the sun until Summer in Dundee 2010! Hopefully my tan will stay with me for a few weeks down here. We did look into getting another roadtrip, passing Ayres Rock etc, but there were no relocations and it would cost far too ... read more

So we've spent the last week in Darwin, reading books and reading the job section of the papers, but to no avail. The first night we arrived, we met with Nicola and Stef's fellow apple pickers, Aifa and Becky. We shared a few $8 jugs of Carlton Draught (that was to be a constant throughout the week) and then went to Mindil Beach Sunset Market. It was affy bonny, and the locals turn out by the hundreds and drink there drink and watch the setting sun. Then everyone goes to the market to try one of the "120 food stalls from 50 countries", as the lonely bible says. We had some Chinese thing which was very pleasant. Most days we spent in the cool air conditioned hostel, only going out to use the free internet at ... read more

So, the afternoon of my last blog, we decided to pack our bags and head on the road. We were pretty depressed with no job prospects coming up, and we thought we might aswell take advantage of the time we have in Australia, to see other places, and you never know, there might be jobs out there some place. There's a company overhere, Standby, that works on behalf of car rental companies. Basically, when people take a car hire out, but only want to drive it from A to B, and not back to A, Standby advertise for people to take the car back to A. A in our world, was Darwin. A mere 3000 kilometre journey across the middle of Australia. We took the 6 hour bus journey to Cairns from Townsville, and picked up ... read more

So its been over a week since my last entry, and we've done quite a few places, so here's a quick summary of where I've been and what I've done. The first stop was Bundaberg. We met Nicola here and checked into our very nice motel room. After a quick walk around the little Oz town, and the obligatory pint, we treated ourselves to a pizza takeaway and a night in front of the TV. The next day we took a tour of the Rum Distellery. Bundy Rum is well known throughout Oz and it is made here. It was quite a good tour with some free samples at the end, but Im still not a fan of the stuff. We decided to ask a few of the working hostels in the town if they had ... read more

So our journey continued up the coast this week.. As I said, we then arrived in the quiet town of Rainbow Beach. We thought all these seaside places up the coast would be full of life and backpackers, but how wrong could we be. The place was pretty dead, even more so with the downpours of rain we suffered. It seems that Rainbow Beach is mainly used as a place to go to Fraser Island from, however we had already decided to go there from Hervey Bay, another town 2 hours up the coast. We unpacked and went to see the sights. Well, the sights consisted of a 2km walk along the beach to see the coloured cliffs, not fun in the rain. So we decided to leave that for a 'sunny' day, if there ever ... read more

So, last time I wrote we were still all at Micks after a trip to Surfers Paradise. We're now on the move... The last 2 nights were spent at the local RSL club, and then in the valley the next night for a leaving night for Nicola's friend, Becky. Both were spent suitably drunk where I carried on my drinking habits. Me, Stef and Jen then headed up to Noosa on Saturday for the first leg of our 2 week journey up the coast. We couldn't find any hostels on the net, apart from one badly reviewed place, so we decided just to go up any because "surely there would be somewhere to stay", oh how wrong could we be. After a few phone calls to a few hostels, and asking hostels minibus for vacancies, we ... read more

So me, Jen, Stef and Nicola set off on Monday for a little holiday to the town/city of Surfers Paradise. Its just an hour south of Brisbane and is very popular with tourists and locals as a holiday place. It reminds me very much like somewhere in Spain. Huge beach, loads of bars, high rise apartment buildings, and girls strutting their stuff in bikins. Heaven some may say. We got there about dinner time and went in search of somewhere to stay. We found a cheap hostel, and we were sold by the name, Backpackers in Paradise. Oh how wrong could they be? There were wee bugs on the floor, cockroaches on the wall, sand grinded into the corner of the shower, oh and the bunk beds were the shakiest and squeekiest I have ever had ... read more

G'day sports fans, So I thought it was gonna be a quiet week, but how wrong could I have been. So I met Stef on Sunday evening, and we checked into our new hostel, Banana Benders. It was bra to have a good night sleep without any loud and annoying Germns. We just chilled out at night and caught up. The next morning we had a lie in and decided we'd better do some washing. What a relief it was to have a clean towel, as mines was pure bouffin after using it since I left 2 weeks before that. as I went through to the reception to get some change for the washers, Nicola comes waltzing through the door. I was shocked. The upshot of how she came to be there, a week early, was ... read more
