Another fantastic white water adventure.

Bucks County
Dave lived in Bucks county for 3 months last year. Wish we had read this blog a year ago. I would have enjoyed seeing Mercer Castle. Thanks for sharing.

Mercer castle
Thanks for the comments; Mercer Castle was quite the place. Another motivation for the next road trip : )

I've enjoyed reading about your travels around the mid Atlantic...
and thanks for going back to 2009. I look forward to your filling the gaps since then.

Close to heaven
Booking the massage in advance shows what a wise man you are! America has so many wonderful off the beaten path locations. When we retire we plan on doing a cross country trip by not using any major interstates. That should be a blast. Love those family owned restaurants and laughed at your description of shoo-fly- pie.

White water massage
I knew I would need that massage after getting worn out by the Gauley a year earlier. The farm providing it was certainly a nice bonus. Your trip plans sound amazing, and a journey we will all want to read in the future : )

U.S. Rafting
Ive done the Gauley and the New Rivers in West Virginia. Looks like you found some great rapids to increase your heart rate. Good times.

Intense rafting
The Upper Yough is definitely the hardest and most exciting trip I've ever done, continuous rapids with little room for error. Very tough and very worth it. I've done the lower New three times (and the upper Gauley twice). I nearly drowned on the second trip. The third on Bridge Day was part of the first trip I ever blogged, and my introduction to Travelblog.

Art Museums
Thanks for the comments. The Abstract Expressionism show was amazing. No blog pictures, sadly, due to copyright restrictions.

Oh the joys of water
I used to go rafting all the time until I had a pretty good spill on the American river in California. I've been many, many times in West Virginia and Tennessee. Glad you had a good time. The power of the water is always amazing....what a rush. MJ

Joy of whitewater
I too find rafting addictive : ). On my big cross-country trip I managed to raft six rivers, including the South Fork American. If you've floated Class V rivers in West Virginia, we almost certainly have some in common! (two of which I've blogged)

White water
Really pleased you took the plunge Ezra. Some things you have to. Reminds me of attempting to canoe a river in flood. Little pool to enter, down a metre drop, immediately going sideways, thrown out, Denise and I like torpedoes for the next 200 metres before we could slow down to get our canoe back. The strangest thing is we went over rocks like in a hovercraft...missing overhanging branches...just. I could feel you sliding down those natural waterslides...and isn't it insane...because of the speeding way water cushions you...it's probably hard to get injured.

Taking the Plunge
"Some things you have to" ... a great travel philosophy. I've found myself in any number of adventures that way (including this one). The first time I had to swim whitewater I got sucked into a whirlpool, panicked, and nearly drowned. I still went back and conquered that river four years later (and then blogged about it :) )

PA
I'm thrilled that you are blogging about past trips. You are a wonderful story teller. I love our state roads in America with all the off the beaten towns. Love the memorial on the Lincoln Highway and the mural on the barn.

Pennsylvania back roads
Pennsylvania is one of my favorite states for a long drive with the top down. Seemingly every rural road is very pretty, historic, or both. Lots of unusual attractions too. Thanks for the comments.

This was such an interesting read, Ezra. Especially considering recent events, it's an interesting psychological insight into how we mourn, memorialize and pay our respects. A shame that the area with all it's personal touches has been redeveloped, though I confess I'm curious how the new "memorial" will compare to what you have captured here. Thanks for sharing!

Memorials, then and now
Thanks for the comments. I found the rawness of the site and the effort needed to find it added so much to what I felt to witness it. According to the Park Service website, the area now has a Memorial Plaza with a museum, a memorial wall, and trees dedicated to the passengers. If you've seen the Oklahoma City memorial or similar sites, it has similar design ideas.

Amazing
I too love waterfalls. How spectacular these are and as you say, a beautiful bittersweet sight. Very beautifully written blog I could hear the rush and gurgle and spray of the waterfalls as I read it. Thank you!

Beautiful and bittersweet
Thanks for the comments. I aimed to capture the feeling of the hike in the blog since I'll never be able to re-experience it. At least I have memories and pictures; and the beauty far outweighed the rest.

So many great places to wander
"So many great places to wander and so little time" ... truer words were never spoken. Rickett's Glen is one of my favorite places to wander, as the blog hopefully shows. Thanks for the comments!
