It was a nice peaceful Sunday morning in Cleveland when we awoke. It had been threatening rain all weekend, and today really looked like the day. The clouds were ominous, but we only had to travel 10 miles for the first stop on our adventure for today. The plan today was a 26 mile each way train ride on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad at 9:00AM. Originally, I meant to book the observation car, but they had a continental breakfast option, so we decided to skip breakfast at the hotel and have breakfast on the train. It turned out that the continental breakfast is served in the parlor car called the St Lucie Sound which is a restored 1946 luxury car with comfortable chairs and couches. Only 7 of us had booked this option, so we ... read more

Today will be our first day on this trip so far where we never even started the motorcycle. We intentionally selected qa hotel that was in walking distance of the Rock 'N Roll Hall of Fame so that we didn't have to deal with parking or anything. In fact, since we are parked at a free meter, if we move the bike and lose our place, we will be forced to park in the $18 per day Guest Parking. Not knowing what to expect, I looked around to find some other things to do downtown if we finished early. That would not be a problem. There is a Starbucks in the lobby of the hotel, so rather than having a formal breakfast, we just stopped at Starbucks for coffee and a muffin. The girls at Starbucks ... read more

The weather forecast this morning for both Columbus and Cleveland was bright and sunny with no chance of rain. There also wasn't any wind. Temperatures started at a cool 77 degrees and rose to a balmy 84. It was the perfect day to ride. And after a quick breakfast in Columbus that's just what we did. I set the Garmin to avoid highways, and for the almost 4 hour ride from Columbus to Cleveland, it was just 2 lane country roads all the way. Small town after small town passed by with very little traffic along the way. After yesterdays 4-lane highways and grooved pavement interstates, it was just the relaxing ride we needed. We're planning on spending 2 nights in Cleveland, and our hotel is withing walking distance of the Rock 'N Roll Hall of ... read more

Our plan this morning was to get an early start as we new it would be a 300+ miles day, but all good plans are subject to adjustment, especially when we didn't wake up until 7:00. After a quick breakfast, we packed up the bike to head southwest to Auburn located in the northeast tip of Indiana. We checked the weather forecast and it looked like scattered showers throughout our travels for the day. It wasn't actually raining yet, but to play it safe, and as a little insulation from the morning chill, we went ahead and put on our rainsuits. Our trip took us west on US-12, and once we were outside of Dearborn, the road turned into a wonderful country road between farms with lots of twists and turns and hills. It made for ... read more

It was cool in the room when we woke up this morning, a good sign that we still had electricity. We didn't have far to go today as we only planned to visit the Henry Ford Museum and luckily it was only 2 miles away. We slept in as best we could and after a quick breakfast we set out for the Ford. We arrived just as it was opening and looked at the myriad of options. There are basically 4 sections to the complex. The Ford Museum of Innovation, Greenfield Village, F150 Assembly Plant Tour, and the Giant Screen which was really an iMax. Since we were only here one day and didn't want to feel too rushed, we chose the Ford Museum and Greenfield Village. We saw the Corvette Assembly tour a number of ... read more

Our second day in Dearborn started out strangely. As I was waking up, I noticed that the room was a little warm, and made a mental note to be sure and turn down the A/C tomorrow night. Jody woke up, headed to the bathroom and yelled back that the lights were out in the bathroom. As we both looked around, it was evident that there was no electricity in the entire room, and a peek out the door showed the emergency lights were on in the hall. There was no electricity in the entire hotel! Jody's big concern was with the availability of coffee, of course. So while she headed down to the lobby in search, I headed into the shower in the dark before we ran out of hot water. Jody came back with the ... read more

Last night was early to bed, and this morning late to rise. Those Doubletree beds sure are comfortable! After a quick breakfast at Bob Evans across the street, it was off to our first destination just a couple of miles down the street - Windmill Island Gardens. The town we stayed in last night is called Holland, so it is only natural that it have a Dutch heritage, and some local Dutch attractions. Sure enough, Tulip Festival is really big around here, but that's in mid-May so we already missed it. The Windmill Island Gardens has an actual 250 year old Dutch windmill, disassembled in the Netherlands and shipped back here and reassembled back in the 1960's. It is a working windmill and has a miller on site who operates it to mill the grain they ... read more

This morning we bid a sad goodby to the upper peninsula, though we technically left yesterday when we crossed the Mackinac Bridge, but we could still see it across the bay. After a quick hotel breakfast, we loaded up the bike and hit the road at about 8:00, about typical for us lately. It was warmer this time, mid-60's, jean jacket weather for me but still leather jacket weather for Jody. Our plan was to follow US-31 all the way from Mackinaw City down to Saugatuck and ride the dunes. Since our hotel was actually on the old US-31 it didn't take long to get on the right US-31S. In the first hour, we passed through a series of towns in what is somehow called Upper Michigan which actually means Upper Lower Michigan as opposed to ... read more

Today was already expected to be an ambitious day, not that many miles, but lots of stuff to do. We both slept really well last night, probably from all the fresh air yesterday, though the bed was reasonably comfortable. The hotel (an AmericInn) was nice enough, but had lousy WiFi, probably more a problem with the area rather than the hotel itself. Munising, MI is pretty isolated. But the lousy WiFi meant I couldn't finish my blog yesterday - I finished the text, but didn't have time to do the pictures or the map before I was too tired and just wanted to go to bed. So I woke up around 5:45 and went ahead and uploaded and annotated the pictures. By the time I finished, showered and had breakfast we were running a little late, ... read more

This morning we are continuing our trek northward to a place not many people have visited - The U.P. For those who don't know, "The U.P." stands for the Upper Peninsula. As I vaguely remember my elementary school geography, Michigan is an odd shaped state actually split into two pieces by Lake Michigan. The lower half is affectionately known as "The Mitten" as it is shaped like a mitten, and most of the people live there. But the upper portion is known as The U.P. and the people who live there are called "Yoopers". Now that the geography lesson is done, back to our adventure. After catching up on a little rest yesterday, it was time to start the 300 mile journey into Munising, Michigan. Though we typically stick to the secondary roads, the first half ... read more
