I manage to get a room for 2 nights and the place is very nice except that owing to it's design which is rectangular with a courtyard with swimming pool in the centre it's acoustics are brilliant. This means that that I can hear the drunken Frenchman on the ground floor opposite singing away for 2 hours while I'm having my siesta - I say out loud to myself 'Shut Up will you'and he hears me - 'What you f*****g say English?' Luckily he has no idea where my voice came from and carries on singing when he doesn't get a reply. Anyway, earlier I had been on a bopat trip around the mangroves along the coast. Unfortunately we don't get into them and it's more a trip around the bay. After this we head 15km ... read more

Well after 3 days at Daves I take his advice and book a bus ticket to Ko Kong on the South Coast near the Thai border. Booking bus tickets here is a bit strange - they must be pre booked the day before but you can't book them 2 days in advance - I suspect that if you turned up on the day and they had space they'd take your money ;-) Apparently this journey takes 6 hours with a couple of stops. Before they built the 4 bridges it used to take 12 hours as you had to get ferries across the river and change buses every time. Anyway, Sa Vannah picks me and Dave up at 07:20 and my stomach is feeling none too clever - I've been to the loo 3 times already ... read more

Well I got to the point where I couldn't wait to leave Vietnam. Mainly because I just couldn't take the in your face hard sell'' attitude of most of the people in the end. The constant sounding of horns in the traffic got to me too! Saigon just wasn't my cup of tea I have too admit - too noisy 24 x 7! And the overcharging of tourists went to new levels. The hotel even hassled me to pay my bill in full the day before I left! There are some good things about Vietnam and some lovely places and I wilkl come back to do the Ho Chi Minh trail by motorbike and the North West corner around Dien Bien Phu but Saigon, Hue and even Hoi An to an extent won't be on the ... read more

Yesterday I spent in Saigon. First I took a taxi to the War Remnanats Museum - what an upsetting experience. If you think Mai Lai was an isolated incident think again! Quite how the Americans justified killing and disembowelling 3 boys aged 10, 8 and 6 I will never know. Several war reporters witnessed civilians being shot by US marines. It seems to have been an every day occurrence. The Vietnamese claim that of the 3 million vietnamese that died only 1 million were soldiers. Anyone who beleives that modern warfare is any different is living in a fools paradise. Not every Iraqi was a Saddam supporter or a member of Al Quaeda - most of the 'collateral' ocivilian damage in any war wanted what we all want peace, security and happiness. The photographs don't pull ... read more

We set off early again and yet again we have an early 'toilet stop' at a handicapped persons (Agent Orange victims) handicraft centre - us and 20 other coach parties. Unlike yesterday I'm really impressed with the lacquer work stuff that's made here. I didn't realise that all the patterns and pictures are made with egg shells and then varnished and lacquered. If I had the room and the baggage allowance I would definitely have bought some of this beautiful work. Maybe another time. After we leave here I begin to appreciate just how big HCMC (Saigon) really is - we pass through an very new modern district that our guide tells us is going to be the new City Centre - what it looks like is Vietnams answer to Londons Docklands - really expensive houses ... read more

Up early and off at 08:00 on a bus tour to Cu Chi. This place is famous/infamous and a place the French and the Americans who fought there will never forget. There are approx 200km of tunnels in this area dug in to red laterite clay - which hardens like iron when dry and is pretty much the same when it's wet - it was certainly rock hard walking on it today. I know we're close when we pass through a large rubber plantation - this pre dates the War and must have been replanted since. The trees all had the 'white 45 degree line' cut into the bark at varying heights with a small wooden bowl to collect the rubber sap tied to the tree. Several locals are walking amongst the trees collecting it. We ... read more

I met a motorbike guide from Da Lat while waiting for the taxi ti the airport. Lots of people have told me thatb Da Lat and the Cental Highlands are the real Vietnam. Pete says so too - he does tours all the way from Da lat straight up into the mountains and jungles up the Ho Chi Minh trail, up past Khe Sanh and onto Ha Noi through the mountainous route. Sounds like I've really missed out not doing this - he says you can do Vietnam along the coast (which I've done) but you won't see the real Vietnam unless you do the length of the country along tthe HCM Trail. He gives me his card for next year. The taxi arrives and the hotel owner gives me a packet of biscuits, a bottle ... read more

I met Nick again at the Bo Bo Cafe - he's just got back from Ha Noi and even he nearly got ripped off by the taxi drivers and they knew he could speak Vietnamese! We talk about jacking our respective jobs in the UK in - he was Civil Service and found it very constricting. He's developed more, done more and achierved far more in Vietnam. He told me about a British guy who started at the bottom in one of the big hotels and made General Manager of te hotel in 4 years without having to do all the qualifications and the degree course that you would in the West. There's opportunities here for anyone who wants get on. We shake hands and he gives me his card - he reckons that I would ... read more

I went to the other beach this morning and awished immediately that I hadn't! This is a building site for yet more resorts, hotels, beach apartments and bungalows. There are kounds of samd being dumped on the beach by a dumper truck - it's an eyesore but doubtless the local Peoples Committee have had their bung to turn a blind eye to it or it would be stopped! The beach is empty which makes me a huge target for the tat sellers and veach cafes. I was dropped at one in particular who gave me her card and told me to come back later for food - this is easiest as there is no way of telling who is good and who isn't and they all allow the tat sellers to pester you at the table. ... read more

The weather is exceptionally good today - apparently this is more like Spring for them. At least the locals won't keep asking me if I'm cold in just a T-shirt today. This time of year is very cold to them - cold at 14C! I try to explain that I would not take the heat when it's hot like they can but the women still think I'm going to catch a cold. I walk throught the town along the river and notice a boy with crippled legs shuffling about selling nuts, 2 old women in ;ong slim boats with eyes painted pn the bow are actually 'gondoliers' for hire - everyone works here! Absolutely everyone works here - they don't have a choice about it! No freebie houses and state hand outs here. Makes you think ... read more
