Don't confuse the flip flops! If you end up in a small hotel, or a traditional one called a ryokan, keep a sharp eye on the flip flops. They give you your own for wear inside the joint. Usually 3 sizes too small for large Western feet.
But, what they DON'T tell you is that you gotta trade your in-the-house flips for the using-in-the-commode ones...do your little business, and trade back, leaving the other pair behind.
If you do forget and wear the bathroom flips into the main house, an irate little woman will chastise you and beat you about the head.
Amazing how happy and relaxed you look. Bravo.

You made me cry I am so happy!!!!! Dear Brett,
I am so happy to see you so happy. I can't thank Lisa and her family enough. I knew that they would be wonderful as she is so very wonderful. "Apples don't really fall far from the trees" old American proverb. The pictures are great and exciting. Can you communicate with her parents? Do they speak any English? Can you send pictures of her family? Oh , so much fun!!!!!
Just to update you on Indo. They just had an 6.3 earthquake there so be careful when you go. I don't want another washout from that quake while you are visiting. I am taking my computer with my on my vacation. I hope I can set it up or I will have to visit a cypercafe....but in Palm Coast? I don't think so.
I love you and Larry said thank you for remembering. You both look great and we miss you. Sorry. No lunches for me on Tuesday until you come back.
Big hugs and kisses
Mom
good to hear from you... i think the comments from your friends are more entertaining than your trip! Yeah, where is Risa? and her parents? and oh yeah...where exactly R U ??? and how about sebastian? is he in the travel business??? i did like his idea about visiting the bath house though ... anyway ... looking forward to hearing and seeing more from you, risa, her family and your friends .... stay well ...
Brett, looks and sounds like your trip so far in damn near perfect....happy for you...by the way, put soome people in touch w/ Jimmy for ya.. peace out
Things to do in Tokyo... 1. Get up very early in the morning and visit the main fish market. Son't sound like much, but quite the spectacle.
2. Play Pachinko. Win ball bearings! Amazingly popular. Accumulate some and you can trade them in for little trinkets and prizes. However, many give you coupons that you can take around the corner and exchange for money if you would be so lucky.
3. If possible, visit the main Tokyo Park Sunday Afternoon to listen to the bands and revel in the lack of vehicle traffic.
4. Visit one of the few public baths
5. Take a train, any train, during a weekday morning visit to the subway. Be sure to experience the very polite "shover guy," who literally push you into the cars so the doors can close. Pay particular attention to all the robot-like people listening to personal audio devices and reading the pornographic cartoon books known as "manga."
6. If at all possible, try to attend a sumo tournament. First few days will be easiest to get tickets. If not in Tokyo during your visit, then in a city usually within easy rail travel - well worth experiencing.
7. Go to a baseball game, if only to see the syncronized cheering sections and eat not hotdogs but slurpy noodle soup.
Such a deal!
