Geo: 34.1803, 77.5801Better late than never, the last reflection of the time in the subcontinent. We in the so called developed world have a very rigid view of work time and leisure time. I know it's a gross generalisation to say that we all work 9 to 5 Monday to Friday and this doesn't take into account those who do shift work or perhaps those who run their own businesses, those that work in part time or casual positions or people who are on call. But realistically the majority of workers do so during what's commonly called "business hours". In the less developed world the concept of work and what is considered a reasonable source of income is completely different. Shops don't have set hours of opening and closing if you own a shop chances are ... read more

Geo: 28.2636, 83.9724I know I've harped on about transport and the modes employed in various countries before but I feel I need to mention something that I have found relatively unique to the sub-continent (Nepal and India in this case). Before I had even left for this trip I had been told stories of the fabled much loved and loathed motor bike produced in India to a British design the Enfield Bullet. The Bullet has been in production to basically the same specifications since the 1950's and to a novice its very difficult to tell the age of some of these machines because they all look like they were made in the 1950's. They are big and heavy and low to the ground, they have chunky forks , a huge petrol tank and old fashioned saddle ... read more

Geo: 27.7029, 85.3182Travelling they say broadens the mind and I agree when you are in an unknown area, city or village with unfamiliar food/ traditions/ bathing habits etc. you find out things about yourself that may have been to this point buried deep in your psyche. Recently when we were in Mcleod Ganj in India I found such a thing out about myself that I hadn't really been confronted with before in my safe little life and if I was in any doubt about it then the trip to the remote village of Gatlang in Nepal has made me realise that I have a fear. It's an irrational fear as most fears are, not unlike those who are scared of spiders or snakes or mice but unlike those types of fears I'm am unable to frighten ... read more

Geo: 27.7029, 85.31823 Days ago we arrived in Kathmandu and I cant tell you how much of a breath of fresh air it is after 3 months in India and I mean that literally. The air really is cleaner here. In fact the whole place is cleaner except the place we visited yesterday where they burn the bodies of the dead on the river bank the water there did resemble the water in India but I guess that's what you get when you throw the ashes of the dead into a river. Regardless we are here to start our stint as volunteers, the time in Kathmandu is to orientate us and teach us some Nepali language because where we are going is remote and not to much English is spoken, in fact that's what we are ... read more

Geo: 28.6137, 77.1834I realise th is may be a little harsh but #*%$ political correctness sometimes you just have to tell it like it is.Many of us in Australia complain about our society one of those things is the public transport system, it could be more efficient, cost less and be overall more appealing to use. It's because of this, the inevitable crush up against a stranger's armpit and the distances required to cover that the majority of people resort to driving cars everywhere. If you watch peak hour traffic in a city like Melbourne you notice that most of the vehicles have one occupant in a car designed to carry up to 3 or 4 passengers as well as a driver. It's quite indulgent of a society to take such an advantage of space and ... read more

Geo: 32.1024, 77.5619Meeting people has always been one of my favourite things mainly because I find it interesting how differently others see and interact with the world. Of course when you travel you meet so many people on a daily basis that its impossible to get to know them all well, some of them you may end up spending more time with than others but generally what sticks in your head is the first impression and whatever associations you attach to them. Following is a list of people that I remember meeting so far on this trip it is by no means an extensive list but it is all I can remember, it follows no particular order.Judy, a 47 year old American lawyer who is travel ling India on a spiritual questChime, a 10 year old ... read more
