We didn't know an awful lot about them, other than what we had learned about Cochise in Tombstone, but we knew that his stronghold was quite the refuge for him and his tribe, since the Cavalry had extreme difficulties with the terrain. After driving the 30 miles to the park boundaries, and 10 miles of dirt road to the location, we could see why. It's not just that the area is remote, though it is. It's also that the area has very little water and terrain that is virtually impassable except on foot. Even then, without a good guide, the terrain would be enough to get you lost, even if there weren't hostiles crawling all over it,
