It is one of the most important churches in Europe and the finest baroque church in England. The care of Christ Church has, for many years, been beyond the means of the parish. Although it was buildt to serve a rapidly growing community of silk weavers, whose houses can still be seen in the adjoining streets, the decline of their industry started a process of decay which, in the last hundred years, has led to the whole neighbourhood becoming severely distressed.
