As usual, most days are either morning or afternoon shift we work first; the morning shift feeds bears and makes food, then the afternoon shift will finish the food or do outdoor work like clean sites or make bear beds. Then we hang around doing some work and feed bears as they come in . At 3:30 we eat dinner then prepare for the visitors to come in from 5pm-8 or 9pm. I prefer working admissions as i just sell a few tickets and then read my book. We have a few new volunteers: 2 girls from CA i don't have much to say about, they are younger and very typical young american girl i guess... and a volunteer called Buddy who i could write a short story on, but will make it short and entertaining... ... read more

So being at the bears for some time, i am ready for a change to get to Central America. Just the change of even lugging my belongings from crowded bus to crowded bus seems like the bit of new scenery i need. Some illness has been spread around through the volunteers and unfortunately i had also gotten ill... had to sleep an entire day to recover, which meant i got to avoid visitors for a day, hooray! There are some great bits about the sanctuary though- i do enjoy the rustic-camping wilderness of it all. Although we now have the ‘pleasures’ of having a trailer with electricity and wireless internet, a lot of us try not to use it too often. We’ve had a wolf spider in our cabin who frequents us with visits. Once the ... read more

So at the bear sanctuary in Minnesota now for two weeks and it’s been pretty slow for the most part; we’ve gotten some bears in, mostly a few moms with yearlings, a few have spring cubs that are very small and adorable. There have been a few big males coming in checking out the females, trying to get some chances to mate before the larger more dominant males come in. Alfie, the little bear from last year has yet to show up. He was a handful and they said last year toward the end of the summer they were using a cattle prod on him to negatively condition since he liked to follow people and play like he was a dog... so it would be interesting to see how he behaves if he does come back. ... read more

Driving on the left side of very narrow roads; roundabouts in the city you think you were going to get in to an accident everytime you used it, and tremendously winding in the country with narrow curves and incredibly hilly weaving in and out of parked cars facing both directions on both sides of the road, tiny cars in comparison to those in the States, the side mirrors fold into the car to avoid being knocked off by the cars getting so close, it was amazing to drive around England! It was very different and quite interesting. Strangely, the public post boxes, public buses, public telephone booths all are painted red. There are no fire hydrants around. All the houses are made of brick and usually houses near each other in the cities all look identical ... read more

I was well excited to get to travel to England for two weeks! I am horrible at planning, so I thought it would be more cheap and convenient to take a Greyhound bus for 1 1/2 days to New York to fly to London... as exciting and interesting as it was, it was completely unnecessary. Fun, though. On the journey, I met a woman at the station, and when she asked where I was going, I said England and she was so surprised that the buses ran that far... Then i met James, the meth dealing man 'fleeing' to New York to do a tattooing apprenticeship. ps- he was carrying a chainsaw in his luggage. He asked me to wander around Chicago with him during our layover. i had to decline. My one hour layover in ... read more

South America » Ecuador January 11th 2009

It's been a little over a week since i flew back in from Ecuador on the 11th, back to Michigan to finish Uni for my final semester. This week has been a time of adjustment; getting used to little things, like being able to put toilet paper in the toilet and not in a nearby bin, having the 'right-of-way' as a pedestrian and not needing to scramble to cross the street to avoid being hit, not having to think ahead to what i am saying to strangers to translate it to Spanish and hope it makes sense; of course the most dramatic transition is going from warm, sunny, and down-pour raining to a few feet of snow, freezing cold and arctic gusts of winds. I really do miss Ecuador and do hope to go back some ... read more

It´s quite sad in a way that my four weeks in Ecuador is almost up. I regret not being able to make it to the coast but i have many more chances to see it when i want to. Heather and Ben left today, but before they left Ben nearly got attacked by a coati who always jumps on my head and back when i am in there, and he managed to do a graceful spin off of the bench and smash his side on the stairs but saved his lunch from spilling. We are getting seven new volunteers on Monday, allegedly. This is my last weekend off so next week i will work until Friday, take the bus in afternoon to Baños, stay there the night, then go to Quito for the following night as ... read more

Ahoy! Things are going really well here still. For the New Year, a bunch of us volunteers have gone to Baños again. We took a Taxi truck on the way there and my, my roommate, and an Ecuadorian- Flavio, all rode in the back pick-up while it rained a bit and played silly games while everyone else rode inside the truck and was boring. The ride to Baños is prettier when you can see all around and aren´t blocked by the bus. Glen (my roommate) was giving a ¨tour¨which was complete crap and teaching me dirty words in Spanish. When we went through tunnels, us 3 swapped shirts with eachother since it was dark and when the others turned around they got a good laugh. Then when we were switching back, Glen stole my shirt until ... read more

Ecuador is an amazing place. First i was in Quito which is pretty decent. Lots of street merchant-venders and stray dogs, kids running around, most places are safe, but as i found out once crossing certain roads it definitely is not as safe. I found a hostel with very very nice people running it. The weekend i was there, the President of Ecuador was doing something i never quite figured out, so loads of people were about and shouting praises, and the one way crowded streets were even more crowded! what would normally take a taxi 5 minutes to drive took about 20-30 minutes. They were just one laned with buildings on both sides with shops inside them selling food, Ecuadorian merchandise, or plastic toys and items you´d find in the States and probably made in ... read more

North America December 2nd 2008

Nine days... it's hard to believe.... but i will be in Ecuador, traveling for the first time and traveling alone. I am going to an animal rescue centre in the Amazon, Flor de la Amazonia. They mostly take in illegally trafficked animals, rehabilitate, and get them ready to release. i am incredibly excited. My future traveling companion(s), just spent a month at the same centre i am going to, and i have spoken with has given me tips and told me some things about traveling so i hope it will be easier for me. As this is my first time traveling, i am getting increasingly nervous. But, hopefully i will get enough of what i need to know from Step before i leave. But, i still feel nervous, jittery, anxious, and all of the pre-traveling jitters ... read more
