Europe » Norway August 25th 2014

Geo: 59.235, 4.34509This cruise was very port-intensive, and this is what we wanted. Unlike on a Caribbean cruise -- when I really enjoy days at sea -- the ship was really a means to an end, and with the cool temperatures, it's not as though we were going to be sitting out by the pool all day. This day -- Monday -- was our sea day, while we made the fairly long voyage up along the western coast of Norway to our northern-most destination, from which we would then stair-step our way back down again. With her body clock out of kilter -- and a teenager's appetite -- Anna was up before 4:00am. I, too was up early, and she and I decided to throw on some clothes at 6:00am and head up for an early breakfast. ... read more

Europe » Norway August 24th 2014

Geo: 58.1447, 7.99828With the time change, we were all awake quite early, but with the blackout curtains in place, no one was in a hurry to get up. Our first port of call was to the Kristiansand, on the southern coast of Norway. We weren't docking until after lunch, so we had the morning to explore the ship, shop a little, and Anna and I played our first round of trivia -- which we won! With all the nationalities on the ship, all of the announcements were made in (and most crew members speak) five languages -- English, Italian, German, French, and Spanish. This made some of the organized events, such as a trivia, pretty elaborate affairs, what with all the translations. The line did a good job of adjusting things to meet the language challenge. ... read more

Europe » Germany August 23rd 2014

Geo: 54.3227, 10.1359Again our GPS was trustworthy and guided us directly downtown toward our ship. Despite all our time spent in Germany, neither of us had even been to Kiel before. We knew from reading that it was all but obliterated in WWII, so there was little to see in the way of historic sights. It is now a major shipping channel for Germany, with lots of cruise and ferry traffic. Our ship -- the MSC Orchestra -- was departing from the pier directly opposite the Old Town area, and in fact our pre-arranged parking was in the Altstadt garage. We were able to drive directly up to the terminal and ship, deposit our bags, and then drive the 500 meters or so to the garage. Free of our luggage and with plenty of time before ... read more

Geo: 55.6763, 12.5681The flight was completely full, though the cramped quarters meant that most of us got little to no sleep. We arrived on schedule and welcomed the news from the captain that the outside air temperature in Copenhagen was 50 degrees. This was our first time to Copenhagen airport in literally more than 25 years, and it was admittedly a little challenging to navigate. We finally located the Avis car rental counter and (unsuccessfully) tried to clear up some confusion on our rental, but we finally got a set of keys and incomplete instructions on where to pick it up. After asking several people, we finally found our way outside and walked across to a massive parking garage, where our tiny Hyundai i20 awaited us.When our port of departure was moved from Copenhagen to Kiel, ... read more

Geo: 39.0095, -77.4647Our flight from Dulles left at 5:15pm, which allowed K and I to work most of the day. Anna had cheerleading practice in the morning, which helped make up for some of the sessions -- as well as the first game of the season -- which she'd miss while we were away. We feared large crowds at the airport given that it was a Friday in the summer, during the peak of the international departures window, but things went smoothly and we even ended up in the TSA pre-check line somehow, which really sped things along, allowing us plenty of time to wait at the gate among a distinctly blonde/blue-eyed crowd of passengers.... read more

Geo: 38.9821, -77.5386We've spoken of visiting the fjords of Norway, and Scandinavia in general, for years, and while we knew we'd get there someday, we just weren't sure when. Nearly a year ago I saw a good airfare offer on SAS for the non-stop flight linking Dulles and Copenhagen. Working from there, we looked at two trips on our bucket list, for which Copenhagen was a good launching point. We broke it down and chose between two cruises -- at the time, both of which were to depart from Copenhagen. One went to Poland, the Baltic countries, and St. Petersburg, and the other visited the Norwegian fjords and Sweden. For various reasons we opted for Norway. Just before we booked, however, the port of departure was switched from Copenhagen to Kiel, in Germany. Not looking too ... read more

Geo: 39.0516, -77.4831As we'd been sitting near the front of the plane, we were off quickly and among the very first people to hit the immigration queue. We had more questions from this immigration officer than we'd had from anyone on the trip. The only hiccup was that since our bags had been sitting on the plane all night, they were among the very last ones to arrive on the baggage carousel. Still, at least they showed up.The brisk air outside the terminal was a bit of a surprise, and sent us all looking for our jackets. The short taxi ride home was uneventful, and it was around 7:15 pm by the time we got everything inside. We each headed for a shower and it was almost a race to see who could get into bed ... read more

Geo: 38.9657, -77.4942Security at Istanbul Airport was much more overt and took more time than in Tel Aviv, which still surprises me. Still, it helped that we did not need to check in for our flight for check any bags, going instead straight to security. By the time we were all done and cleared, we had just enough time for a quick snack and we were at the gate ready to board the flight to DC. Ironically enough, we ended up boarding exactly the same plane we had flown from Israel the night before. I had taken a picture of the nose, which had a city name on it, and they matched. Alas, our flight to Washington was completely full, so not the room to lounge around as we'd had before. The flight was 11 hours, and ... read more

Middle East » Turkey » Marmara » Istanbul April 20th 2014

Geo: 41.0245, 28.9881This entire overnight layover in Istanbul was a personal choice by us. When purchasing the tickets, our original option was to take an early flight on Easter morning from Tel Aviv to Istanbul, and then connect to our early-afternoon flight to Dulles. When I noted that Turkish Airlines would allow us to break up the trip, we talked about going to Istanbul the night before and spending at least the morning to let Anna see a small part of the city. K and I have both been to Turkey before -- albeit not together -- and really love it. We wanted Anna to get at least a taste of the city and wonderfully friendly people. Still, we weren't planning on it being quite such a short time, and the unexpected delays of the night ... read more

Geo: 41.0245, 28.9881There was a substantial checkpoint as we approached Ben Gurion Airport. They boarded the bus and checked our passports, but that was it. I still had visions of when I flew out of this same airport more than 25 years ago, when it was quite a madhouse and I distinctly remember the man squeezing out all of my toothpaste to search for explosives. This was in my mind as I prepared to run a security gauntlet that never came. Before we could check in with the airline, we had our passports inspected and answered some very basic questions. After check-in, we approached the security screening area and I girded my loins...unnecessarily. There was absolutely no back-up. They did not make us remove our shoes, or belts, or even take tablets/laptops out of the bag. I ... read more
