After a late night of farewell drinks in Dong Hoi, Greg, Evi, and I woke up at 4:30am to catch the 5:30am train to Da Nang. We got to the station only to be told the train was running an hour and a half late because of last week's floods. An hour and a half later we were told it would be another hour. Finally after waiting in the train station for 4 hours the train arrived and we began the 6 hour ride to Da Nang. Once we got there and took a car to Hoi An, we checked into the hotel, showered and finally got some decent food and some beer at a street place. The train food was inedible as far as I could tell, but the spring rolls at this place were ... read more

I had my last real office day on Wednesday, and my last day of work on Thursday was spent showing two Intrepid Indochina (tour company) guys around the villages and the park to get their feedback and advice on our project. Mark (Australian) and Hung (Vietnamese) are two chain-smoking, heavy drinking ex-tour leaders who are both brilliant when it comes to planning and doing tourism in Vietnam and a lot of fun to hang out with. They gave me a lot of good information over beers. There's a bit of a disconnect between the NGO world and the business world and we need both involved in the planning of this project in order for all the ideas to actually work as a business. And it was also encouraging to hear them say the area has a ... read more

So we held our successful "Workshop: Community-Based Tourism Potential in the Phong Nha Ke Bang Buffer Zone" on the 7th with representatives from the three communes and local and regional authorities. Wow. I'm still kind of giddy a week later. I'm somehow light years ahead professionally of where I thought I would be one year ago right before I started this Master's program. I was waiting tables at the time. And I just planned and ran an all day workshop attended by important people and introducing a revolutionary idea, assisted of course by the capable workshop-running pros at Counterpart. However, I was the tourism "expert" and I designed and gave many of the presentations, and I planned out the workshop activities for the participants. And it worked! The objective was to create a clear and unified ... read more

It may not seem like it, but I am actually working here in Vietnam. I just have the best job ever and you're all jealous. I've had fun and I've had plenty of rice wine and gotten a tan, but I've also conducted a lot of interviews, read a lot of reports, written a lot of reports, done a lot of public awareness raising, and now I'm designing an all day workshop to be held on the 7th. I just returned from more village visits to do fieldwork. In trying to ascertain the tourism potential in these villages I conducted more household interviews, a few focus group interviews, visited some more places of interest for tourism development, and stayed overnight in some more village homes. I really do love this job. For those of you interested ... read more

After flying back from the wedding, I spent a few days in Hanoi wandering around, exploring, and getting lost in the maze of Old Quarter streets. The Old Quarter dates back to the 13th century and has little nooks and crannies that can make you feel transported through time. I stumbled upon the old Co Luong Communal House down a little alley where the motorbike traffic disappeared and sat by an elaborate alter and had tea with the residents. Later that day I sat on a kid-sized plastic chair at one of the many sidewalk Bia Hoi (draught beer) places and chatted with some Ausie soccer fans. Australia was playing Japan in the Asian Cup football/soccer finals (or semi-finals, I don't really know), and the match was in Hanoi. The group had tickets to the match ... read more

I lost the blog entry for my trip home for Amy and Ben's wedding. I guess it was a little out of place among the stories about Vietnam. I may still write up a whole new entry but I will give a summary for right now. I flew home the 10th of July to be in Amy and Ben's wedding. I would do that horrible 24 hour trip for few people, but Amy and Ben are two of them. It was great seeing everyone (especially Woods) and being a bad bridesmaid with the other lovely bad bridesmaids. We camped out by Lake Erie and the wedding was in Buffalo. After the wedding Woods and I took our time traveling back to JFK, stopping at Houghton to get all nostalgic about the college days and spending the ... read more

Saturday night we took the night train back to Hanoi, had some breakfast, and then sat at a cafe drinking much needed coffee for about an hour before hopping on an ancient bus to Mai Chau. Chi Sen commented that the bus looked older than she is (which is late 40's) as I pried open an antique window to get some relief from the oppressive heat in the bus. A woman came aboard trying to sell fans and fanned me in an effort to get me to buy. Normally I will make it clear that I am not interested, but the fanning felt good and I might have cruelly strung her along a little before refusing to buy. As soon as the bus got going the breeze took care of the heat. There was a ... read more

July 7, Saturday: Sa Pa town On Tuesday night I traveled to Hanoi with Chi Sen and four commune leaders from the buffer zone of Phong Nha Ke Bang. The train was booked solid, so we took a sleeper bus. There were three rows of bunks ingeniously designed so that the head of the person in front of you was above a compartment for your feet. However, it was made for the Vietnamese and my legs were just a little too long. My 4th of July holiday was spent attending a CBT network meeting, conducting a CBT study tour orientation for the commune leaders, and wandering Hanoi with Chi Sen and the men. Chi Sen told me later that the men wanted her to buy me flowers in honor of my country's holiday, but that ... read more

On Sunday I hiked to Da Ban waterfall, one of the areas that we may develop as a community-based tourism site. I took my cue from Chi Sen and the others as to what was appropriate hiking attire. I should really know by now that the Vietnamese are much more agile than me, and the fact that Chi Sen was not in her usual dress heels should have set off warning lights in my brain not to wear flip flops. I wore the flip flops for maybe half an hour before retiring them to my backpack and gracefully slipping and sliding over the slick creek boulders in my bare feet. Pretty early on I fell and landed in a sitting position in the middle of the creek, soaking my clothes to my chest. The commune ... read more

After a restless sleep on a wooden bed frame covered with a straw mat, I went back to Mr. Su's and helped his wife cook some more rice wine Friday morning. The fermented rice smelled like vinegar, but after cooking it with honey and mashed bananas, it was a delicious breakfast pick me up. I left the village with Chi Sen and Mr. Vinh (the Counterpart driver and renaissance man in Dong Hoi), conducted more interviews, then went to visit Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park. The main road through the park runs next to a river so torquoise it looks dyed. The river cuts through a very steep gorge with walls covered in lush green growth. The surrounding hills and cliffs are host to a diverse collection of plants and animals, including primates. We stopped ... read more
