Summer in Europe

Europe » Netherlands » North Holland » Amsterdam June 24th 2009

Yes people, Netherlands has it all! I love Amsterdam! I have been here three nights and I've done a lot. When I arrived at the train station, I went to the tourist info center because I didn't print the map to my hostel. Oops! They told me where to go and I started walking. I'm staying in the red light district but I didnt know it would be this crazy! I was walking.....looking at the canal....oh pretty ducks....BAM! girls in windows! I didnt realize they would be so in your face. Lots of them. wearing practically nothing. And "live porno" shows every 10 steps, sex toys hanging in the windows, the scent of pot, etc. Anyway, I got to my hostel without sinning! ha! The first day I took a self-guided walking tour from my tour ... read more

Wow, Bruges is such a cool city! I highly recommend adding it to your itinerary when you're in Europe. I slept so good last night. It wasn't the best weather today but the sun came out after all. I started out on a self-guided walk that I had in my tour book. I'm glad I did because I got to see lots of Bruges. I went in this church that supposedly has a vial of Christ's dried blood. The museum was closed so I couldn't see it. I went on a 30 minute canal ride which was cool except for the tour guide was in Dutch so I could only understand about 6 words. I saw about 10 chocolate shops and bought so much chocolate. I hope some of it makes it home!... read more

If I never ride a bus/train/plane again in my life I might be okay with that. My hostel was so loud last night and I was paranoid of sleeping past my 4am alarm that I got about 2 hours of sleep. I caught a bus to the airport, plane to brussels, hour and a half bus to train station, hour train to Bruges, bus to city center. I had originally planned to stay in Brussels but on the train ride I changed my mind. So I hopped on the train to Bruges! When I was riding the bus to the city center, I could not believe the amount of people on the streets. It looked like the state fair. Turns out, there is a triathlon going on. It must be huge because there were so many ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Galway » Galway June 18th 2009

Well folks, I'm in Galway, Ireland. I lucked out on my timing at the Aran Islands. I had one super nice day, the other 2 were really crappy. I felt bad for people taking a day trip. I dont know what you would do on that island if it was raining. The only way to get around is by bike! Today I walked around Galway and did some shopping. It was SUPER windy and cold today. when the sun peeks out, it's not that bad. but it's pretty cold out. My hostel room had 8 beds and 6 college kids from Missouri just came in today. They seem fun, maybe we will go out tonight. Tomorrow, I am taking the train to Dublin for a night and Saturday morning I fly to Brussels. Let's hope my ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Galway » Aran Islands June 16th 2009

Well I made it to the Aran Islands, 9 miles off the west coast of Ireland. It is so beautiful here! Yesterday I rented a bike and rode around the island. It was such a gorgeous day, no rain! I went to this fort that was built in something like 1100B.C. and it was right on the cliff's edge. You can see in my pics how cool the cliffs are. It was kind of scary being that close to the edge. I used the self-timer on my camera to take the classic picture of me laying over the edge. The first night I got here, some of us from the hostel went to a pub to have some drinks. It was kind of crowded with a lot of locals. It was a lot of fun to ... read more

I took a bus to Blarney this morning which is only 5 miles away. I walked right to the castle and paid my 8 euro to get in. As I was walking to the castle, this older man was walking next to me and started making small talk. He was from PA. He said "you aren't travelling alone are you?" oh jeez, I thought. Here we go again. I said "yup!" and of course he said "oh my! be VERY VERY VERY careful!" i said "you sound like my mom." then he says "have you seen the movie 'Taken'?" I tried REALLY hard not to roll my eyes and say something snotty. no luck. i said "if I had a nickel for everytime someone asked me that..." then i felt bad because he said sorry. but ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Cork » Kinsale June 12th 2009

Kinsale! I took a 45-minute bus ride from Cork to Kinsale this morning. I knew nothing about the town but I heard it was cool. Pretty hard to convince me! What a great suprise! It was such a cool town. It's a quaint little town of about 4000 people. I found the tourist center and there was a historical walking tour at 11:15, about 1/2 hour away. Perfect! That tour was probably my favorite thing on this trip I have done! The guide had grown up in Kinsale and knew all of its history. Kinsale was a very important port city back in the day. As in 400 years ago. Barry, our guide, told us everything, walked us around, and gave us suggestions for where to eat. After our tour, I just walked around and toured ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Cork » Cork June 11th 2009

This morning I took a bus to the train station to go to Cork. I got up to the ticket counter and the lady that informs me that my $100 ticket would be half price if I bought it online. Awesome. I didnt need that extra $50 anyway. So I run to the platform because I might miss the train. 3 hours later, I'm in Cork! It's a cute city with 2 rivers running through it. I walked around and saw some cool stuff. I toured this old gothic church that was pretty cool. I saw it from a distance and then when I got closer, I saw an open gate. But no one was around. Screw it, I'm going in. I was half expecting some guard dog to start chasing me. But I went in ... read more
