South America » Venezuela March 30th 2010

Our journey from New Zealand to Venezuela is all one big blur to us now. It took us a whopping eighty hours to complete the trip. We boarded four planes, (via Australia and Canada) and endured a fifteen hour bus ride; that, combined with a lot of hanging around airports and bus stations, left us exhausted and almost delirious by the time we arrived at our guesthouse. Caracas greeted us with a slap in the face, rather than the warm embrace we so desperately needed. Whatever way we looked, there were run-down, derelict buildings, chaotic traffic and gangs of youths hanging around street corners. The city was not so safe and a little overwhelming. Needless to say, we headed straight for the bus station to catch the first bus to Merida, a city in the Venezuelan ... read more

Over the past seven months we have used all sorts of modes and methods of transport to get ourselves from place to place, varying them as much as possible to gain the best experience from our travels. From renting push bikes, scooters and 4WD's, to travelling in the back of pick-up trucks; economy class trains to air-con tourist buses; the small leaking fishing boats and huge car ferries, cruises and kayaks, we've even bought our own van! So, as we arrived into Auckland, we booked tickets for the "Stray" bus, a hop-on, hop-off tour bus covering the north and south islands of New Zealand, geared towards adventurous travellers. The first thing that struck us about this incredible country was the beautiful scenery, so diverse and breathtaking. The endless green fields with lazy grazing cows and countless ... read more

With Caoimhe and Lauren gone back home, it was time for us to start exploring what else Australia had to offer. We wanted to have absolute freedom to move as we wished so decided to buy a van in Sydney and drive it all the way up to Cairns. In true traveller style we bought Charlie, a white Toyota Hiace, modified as a camper, fully equipped with a bed and camping gear in the back. Our first road trip was to the 'Blue Mountains', just a two-hour drive outside Sydney. We did a bit of trekking the following morning. The scenery was really beautiful. From here we headed back to the coast and started our new life on the road. The east coast of Australia is a beautiful place to travel. With no time pressures, we ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Brisbane » Moreton Island January 22nd 2010

As the plane touched down in Brisbane airport we could barely contain our excitement. This was the moment we had been looking forward to for as long as we could remember. Having heard so much about the land down under from family and friends, about the beautiful weather, outdoor lifestyle, relaxed, laid back attitude of people and the stunning scenery, we almost had to pinch ourselves to believe we were about to experience it first hand. My cousin Nathan, was there at the airport to welcome us to Oz. He took us for a drive around Redcliff and Scarborough, down by the seafront to a cafe by the beach. We fell in love with Australia immediately and this love grew stronger and stronger with every passing day. We stayed in my Auntie Mary and Uncle Pat's ... read more

With every muscle in our body aching from the wake boarding in Singapore, we lifted our bags onto our backs and headed off to our last Asian country. We arrived into Jakarta late in the evening and found a rustic little hostel to spend the night in. Our first impression of the city wasn’t the best; it all seemed a little too rough and dangerous, but the people that we met were so friendly and helpful that we couldn’t but enjoy our experience there. With little time to spend in Indonesia, we borded an early train to Bogor the following morning. We bought the cheapest train ticket (fourteen cent for an hour and a half’s journey) and we sure got what we paid for. It was as if we had just stepped onto the set of ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Boracay December 15th 2009

With only three days of planning we headed off to the Philippines, quite unprepared for what lay ahead. To date travelling around South East Asia has been so easy so we figured the Philippines would be no different but unfortunately we couldn't have been more wrong. Our adventure began when we left Kuala Lumpur to catch an overnight bus to Singapore. Little did we know that this was the beginning of a thirty-six hour journey involving trains, planes and side cars of motorbikes! Singapore was so easy to get around, even at four a.m. and after two short train rides, a bus and a flight, we arrived in the Philippines. We had read forums and government warnings about the real risk to tourists of kidnapping here and had been advised that the best ways of minimising ... read more

Asia » Singapore » Chinatown December 14th 2009

Singapore is like nowhere else we've visited in South East Asia. The zero tolerance to crime results in a country that is extremely safe and super clean and with English being one of the four national languages (along with Chinese, Indian and Malay) communication rarely caused a problem; a welcome change. The pace of life here is definitely faster, with the busy subways and malls resembling a western society more so than an Asian one. In saying that, a visit to Chinatown or Little India, where the streets are lined with food stalls, Bollywood music blasts out from tiny shops and the smell of incense wafts through the air; you feel right back in the heart of Asia. Singapore has somehow successfully adopted and merged the positive attributes of western and Asian life to create a ... read more

We left Thailand many weeks ago in the direction of the Malaysian island Langkawi. Booking through a travel agent had, up to this, always proved to be the cheapest way to travel, however on this occasion the forty eight euro being asked seemed a bit steep so we decided to make our own way down using any means of simple transportation available to us. Although we may not have had the luxury of an air con minivan and hassle free pick ups, the savings more than made up for that, with the full journey costing us a mere six euro! We were quite proud of ourselves and entered Malaysia in high spirits. Our first impression of the country was great. We were not quite sure what we expected but having spent the previous five weeks island ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Phi Phi Don October 31st 2009

En route to the Andaman Coast, we made a brief stop in Krabi for the town festival party before travelling to Ao Nang where we hopped on a boat for a tour of it's surrounding islands. Once again we were in awe of the country's beauty. We snorkelled in the turquoise-green waters and relaxed on various white sandy beaches. One beach in particular stood out from the rest; Railay Beach, where the playful monkeys jumped between the branches of the trees that lined the sand. Although Railay isn't an island, it's only accessible by boat so it's nice and quiet and very relaxing. We spent four fabulous days here, swimming in the crystal clear waters, reading under the shade of the trees and watching beautiful sunsets in the evenings. Then we left this little paradise for ... read more

After thirty hours of boats and buses, we arrived to Ko Phangnan along with thousands of others, in search of accommodation for the full moon party. We headed straight to the main beach, Hat Rin, where there are rows of basic bungalows and colourfully painted beach bars. We soon found a room right in the middle of town. The night life is huge here, and for the two nights preceding the biggest beach party in the world 'warm-up' parties take place! During the day however we left the packed beaches to explore the more remote, isolated parts of the island. Ko Phangnan has some fantastic scenery with beautiful white sand beaches and a very laid back lifestyle. Along with the full moon, came Paulo's twenty-eighth birthday. We woke up to a bright blue sky and the ... read more
