After checking out the night before we started our hardcore journey from Amritapuri to Kumily in the Western Ghats, the southern mountain range between Kerala and Tamil Nadu states. It included 8hrs of government buses with 2 changes. Now you have to have visited India or the Americas to know what I mean by these, they are giant tin cans of fury with supercharged horns and drivers hell-bent on becoming the next Formula 1 discovery. A distinct lack of shock absorbers and open air windows also add to the pleasant journey. On arrival at Kottayam for our second change it was midday, stinking hot and we were starving. Like an oasis in the heat, a hotel rose from the turmoil of the surroundings and we were guided to it by a higher power – air conditioning. ... read more

It was a lazy day before leaving Fort Kochi at 4pm on our first train, the Jan Shatabdi, heading south to Kayankulam Junction. Our host had told us it was a nice train but didn’t explain how the classes worked. “2S” is second class and whilst we were allocated seats we learned that it doesn’t mean diddly squat. But we got the two old ladies out of our seats and sat down to get evil eyes from them for the next 2 hours. It was almost 9pm by the time we got to Amma’s ashram in Amritapuri. Mata Amritanandamayi Math, or kindly known as the hugging guru, she is one of the most followed gurus in India. We just caught the checkin office before it closed and free Indian dinner and then went to sleep. The ... read more

It was like walking into a convection oven. Our destination within the Kerala region is considered the spice hub of India, with domestic exports going to all corners of the country. We wasted no time getting into the lovely air conditioned airport bus which we rode for 1.5hrs to the final stop Fort Kochi. It was about 6.30pm, getting dark, and my scribbled directions eventually guided us to our elusive accommodation named Tantraa Homestay. Our host was a short dark plump man named Ragesh. Whilst he was 100% indian, I could imagine him fitting straight into the Sri Lankan cricket team, as I would come to learn, southern indians have different physical characteristics to their counterparts in the north. He showed us to our abode, a ground floor flat with living room, bedroom and bathroom. We ... read more

Tuesday the 15th of March was my final day of work in Port Talbot, after the brisk handshakes and goodbyes, I rushed out in a huff at 4pm, only to forget some very important travel documents on my soon to be ex-desk, which came to mind as I was flying down the M4 back to Cardiff, after a swift back-track I was home 45 minutes late to be told I had missed the polish guy on his miniature motorcycle who had been waiting to retrieve my company car. Time to start packing! The moving company were arriving at 8.30am the next morning and I hadn’t so much as made up a box yet. As I got to work on the packing, a Storm started brewing about the last minute nature that I was attending to my ... read more
