6/22/09: Jambo! We had our first day of class today…it was exciting but early and long! Class goes from 9:30AM-3:30 PM. Yikes. Our professor’s name is Simpho Limbe (pronounced Sim-poe Lim-bey) and he’s a human rights lawyer. He’s a very smart man and has really traveled the world. Our class is focused around human rights, encompassing women’s rights, right to health, children’s rights, education, development and capacity building. We started off talking about human rights in general, universal vs. nation-state laws and the basic human needs: food, shelter, clothing, healthcare. We talked a lot about how one of Africa’s biggest problems is their policies: 1. They never really change and even with new administrations business continues pretty much as usual and 2. Their policy goals are all shortsighted, as are the personal goals of most individuals
