Bobo lives! Enjoyed reading about you figuring it out and doing it! I’m glad you didn’t leave Bobo with me. While I would’ve taken good care of him, he hates me and would have likely killed my two cats that hate me a little less.
Holy shit I laughed! I forwarded the link to some neighbours who are about to move to a little town outside of Marseille with their dog. I laugh, they panic.
The book is writing itself I agree with Lisa. You are already writing the book. This post could be chapter 9. Earlier posts are earlier chapters. The book is episodic. Don’t assume that it must be a long-form narrative. You are already doing it.
like my mom said right on! You're doing a good job to, like my mom said, "Never forget the foreign-ness of the moment." Which is impossible. But its a reminder to stop and realize, "oh yea, things are pretty different here than where I grew up. Maybe I can shed some light on that."
She might be dead She's in my head.
Been missing you brother. You have the most beautiful daughter. She will be crowned queen of the planet to keep us all from being so stupid we hurt each other and ourselves when the aliens arrive to keep donny duck from killing us all. Vote Hank for Judge in November!
seriously though, your biting wit is needed to deal with the abject loss of reason and sanity we face in this dying of the light my friend. How on earth did ignorance, hatred and fear become qualities to be admired?
sincerely,
Can't Sleep At Night Any More. :P
Photographs Just a thought, snap shooting tourists aside, aren't artistic images displayed in the West, whether in publications or portfolios, valuable to the tourist trade by making Laos an attractive place to visit?
Striking Commentary Your writing, again, is superb. Wish I could have come along. Glad you find the irony in your travels and write about it. It's always a pleasure to read.
So sorry. Hope you feel better soon. How you can write poetically when you are desperately ill is amazing. Glad you are on the mend. I can somewhat understand since I had malaria in west Africa, but I don't think it was as bad as you described. Wishing your family a steady recovery.
Faulkner Reborn Thank goodness? It's a bit stressful for us worriers as well. So glad it's behind you! Doors closed? Air on? Enjoyed your writing as always!
Dengue Fever Great blog...horrific that it arises from your personal brush with the fear of impending demise. Was the diagnosis of dengue confirmed by blood tests? If not, could it have been an undiagnosed tropical disease, which when there is uncertainty could elevate concern. I understand dengue is rarely fatal but a second bout is a real concern. There are cases of dengue in Northern Australia annually but as the mosquito does not occur below the Torres Strait, it is believed to be carried by persons who have brought it from Asia. While it is not contagious from human to human and only contractible if bitten by the mosquito you name, the fear in Oz is if someone who has it is bitten by a local mosquito, the virus may spread that way. The only prevention is not to be bitten I hear, so sad you endured the lottery of being bitten by the bugger but very happy for you that you received appropriate treatment and can continue to bring joy to your child while you recover.
I started getting Dengue once But then overcame the illness by eating American cheese and using a good work ethic instead of relying on government handouts like medicine.
Bone break fever Scary stuff! I had malaria twice as a child (in West Africa) and even though it was horrendous, your experience of dengue sounds much much worse. Hope you've both recovered and don't have any of the after effects of that evil virus.
Thanks for the reminder.... I have a healthy respect (pun unintended) for tropical diseases, and try not to do anything too stupid. But dengue had dropped off my radar. Maybe I've spent too much time in Singapore where I think mosquitoes are fined S$500 and given 15 lashes if they cross the border ;)
holy cow! Glad you are all OK! I am planning on mother nature taking drastic steps to reverse the short-sighted stupidity of lazy/greedy humanity so put your survival suit on!
Didn't sell me on Japan, as I like life a little messier than Japan. But I appreciate a well researched and well written piece. And the pictures are fabulous.
