Loved reading this Liz. It could have been written about me and my friend childhood friend J -- A very familiar story with lots of great memories. Thanks for sharing Carpe Manana.
Travels Thank you Liz for your humorous vignette. I very much enjoyed it. Marion, Marilyn and I recently spent a couple of days at Chez Noakes on Salt Spring. I have pictures of a bunch of us sitting in I believe your grandmother’s convertible. What fun! Lesley
thanks for reading me How are you? I'm so glad you got together with the "girls.' How is everyone doing? I would love to see that photo! Is there any chance I can drop by when I return to Vancouver next week?
Thanks,
Liz
Sandals on the Ground It's hard not to be moved by your words. You always express yourself so well. It's a pity that Trump himself will never read this, and even sadder that if he did it would mean nothing to him. We area living in strange and painful times
Global Tragedy-with hope for a better life.. Liz...your blog is so well written and heart wrenching. Your description of sweet-faced children, as well as their parent's incredible determination to escape the horrors of their homeland is so real.
We’ve all read so many stories about the migrants but YOU have actually helped them. Trump separated detained families and also sends troops to tear gas them...he is totally despicable!
It’s such a world-wide crisis. On the weekend we met a couple who work in a refugee camp in South Sudan, she is a water engineer and works for Oxfam, he works for the United Nations. They told us sad and complicated stories...Liz...thank you for your courage.
SANDALS ON THE GROUND Exemplary writing of the truth of the poor souls who are being "held hostage" for being human and wanting a better life for their family and themselves. What tragic conditions these people have been living under and no opening in sight! Yes, the Mexicans, do all the work in the States and here, that we continue to enjoy. They spend endless hours doing backbreaking jobs i.e. fields of food to be planted, picked, houses to clean, just any job available in order for them to feed their families and we are the benefactors! I hope Trump gets to read what you have written but you can't count on his mental state to comprehend what being human is! Thank you for writing in detail exactly what you have seen and experienced, as we don't all get the full picture, only ones we feel in our heart for these poor, harmless people who only want a life!
Sandals on the Ground My heart breaks for the folks you have written about, Liz. Desperation will force parents to take chances they would not otherwise take in order to improve the quality of life of their families. It is what parents do! We lead privileged lives compared with most of the world. Thank you for this post.
The Tangerine nightmare I just spent the last two months in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, and your blog struck a deep chord within me. What I learned about the people of Central America is, they may not have much, but what they do have, makes them richer than any American in Trumps screwed up world, period.
Keep 'em coming! It's been a long time but you are still fun and funny and entertaining. I'd forgotten your Nova Scotian background. Fascinating. Keep me in your loop and thanks. J
Salt Life Our life through fresh eyes - makes me appreciate what is, as Fred says " good enough".
Thank you for your energetic "silver" culture labors, wouldn't have gotten done without Lizzy the ever ready bunny. My spruce trees are smiling. Low tide beckons and I will think of you as I get my gentle water walk.
I honestly just checked to see if you had any new blogs yesterday, and poof there's a new one! Love how nostalgic you are for such a lovely part of Canada. Maybe because you are now Mexicans? Anyways, thanks for sharing.
What a beautiful wave of nostalgia The essence of good friends, food beyond compare, the allure of remote surroundings added up to an amazing holiday. Thank you for sharing your incredible experience.
Whew! I don't know the timing since we met, but this seems to be the first batch I've been able to open. I started with you as a pot -- very clever -- and went backward to the missing muchachos. I have to stop here because the visual of you as a pot contrasted severely with this one. But congratulations on your new casa and I shall save this whole thing and keep progressing -- backward. Maybe then we can catch up (down?)
Most Beautiful! What an extraordinarily wonderous new home in such a exciting and colourful country. I love everything you have designed in your home and looked at the pictures many times. What an inspiration you both are to others who take the plunge and travel to another country to live for half the year. San Miguel de Allende is very much your true paradise from what I have seen. It is wonderful to find a place you love so much, people you enjoy and interact with and become involved within the community. Good luck to you in your most beautiful hacienda!
Dreams do come true! How fantastic to build your ideal hacienda in the dreamy city of San Miguel! Olga's and your design is stellar--my favorite parts being that stairwell and the rooftop solar collectors, so much more attractive than the conventional barrel types normally used down here. Mexicans are hard, steady, highly-skilled workers, but they also might take off in the middle of your project to help a friend or go to a fiesta. Congrats to Trish for finding this perfect team. Disfruten bien!
Inspiring We loved the post and look forward to seeing the finished house. In the immortal words of Sid Wayne and Sherman Edwards as screeched by Frankie Valli, "See you in September", or whenever it is you return.
Marty
Your New Casa The house looks gorgeous! I would love to see more photos! And I'm envious! How much time will you be spending there? Are you there now? We are feeling the pull to go back, but not sure when.
